9 Builders broke ground on the Student Recreation Center on March 25, 1993, and the facility opened on August 26, The original building cost $36,462,000 and had a gross area of 286,100 sq ft. The Student Recreation Center is run by 32 fulltime staff, eight graduate assistants, and 800 student employees. It has essentially operated at capacity since opening in A $54 million renovation and expansion project, helmed by Satterfield & Pontikes Construction, Inc. and Greg Houston of Marmon Mok Architecture, started on March 24, The project includes 56,000 sq ft of renovation and more than 113,000 sq ft of new construction, which will be funded without an increase in student Rec Sports fees. In total, the expansion will increase the size of the Rec Center by 25%. Construction will be complete in Fall The facility will remain fully open throughout the expansion/ renovation project, and member access to the Rec Center should not be significantly hampered. 11 FUN FACTS The free weight area has 35,000 lbs. of weight plates and dumbbells and over 165 pieces of strength training equipment! Gymnasium space can be divided into four basketball, four volleyball, or 12 badminton courts. Special Events/Archery Room can accommodate 60 archers and 150 spectators with 14 archery target stands, four bow racks, and one archery net. Two regulation-size indoor soccer courts with rounded corners, dasher boards, and Plexiglas that can be divided into four basketball, four volleyball, or six badminton courts. 21 The David and Barbara Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center following the completion of a $41.2 million renovation project now spans 103,000 sq ft. It is a welcoming and vibrant space for the Rice community where patrons can take advantage of many expanded services. These services include a Personal Training and Fitness Assessment Center, an Outdoor Adventure Center, and an activities lounge with multiple table tennis and billiards tables. 25 SUSTAINABLE FEATURES Restrooms equipped with hand dryers, motion-activated faucets and urinals, and low-flow shower and faucet heads All office lights are on motion sensors Art installation powered by solar energy Automated lighting controls allow for 24/7 scheduling of both the interior and exterior lights and helps reduce wasted energy expenses Recycled materials used throughout facility in areas like the locker room and main lobby GEORGE R. BROWN TENNIS CENTER DESIGNED BY: AECOM Technology Corporation GRAND OPENING: September 2014 The George R. Brown Tennis Center is a state-of-the-art tennis facility for use by both Men s and Women s Varsity Tennis teams, as well as the wider Rice community. This 14-court complex is ideal for hosting regular and post-season competition, complete with full amenities for student-athletes, coaches and visiting teams, ample lighting, and elevated covered seating to keep spectators close to the action. 27 The UTHealth Auxiliary Enterprises Recreation Center is located adjacent to campus housing, and even though it is small facility, it serves as a vital hub to campus activity. The original building, which was constructed in phases from , was destroyed in a fire in 2001 while in the middle of a $500,000 expansion project. In the end, it cost $4.8 million to build an expanded facility totaling 26,000 sq ft. The only remaining part of the original facility is the Olympic-size outdoor swimming pool, which opened in The pool has undergone renovations over the years the most recent was a heating system replacement in TOUR DATE Tuesday, Monday, October 20, 21, 2014 UT Health 25

30 THINGS WE WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY Ensure that flooring materials are aligned with the layout of the electrical floor boxes and air vents so it s easier to perform maintenance that requires removing floor panels Would have the whole building operate on a regular HVAC system instead of one side using chillers Install hot water in locker room lavatories initially instead of only after members requested it Install permanent seats or benches within individual showers Would not use fly ash concrete; it did not easily accept the planned stain colors, so we had to apply an epoxy type material to it that limits repair options and is costly to replace SUSTAINABLE FEATURES Waterless urinals Motion sensor lights Chilled water system Cardio area and main office suites are on a raised floor system The main office area is built with moveable walls and sliding barn doors NIRSA Recreation Facilities Institute PRESENTED BY MONDO

39 Renovation on the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center was completed in It was a $53 million construction project that totaled 264,000 sq ft. The renovation allowed for the growth of campus recreation programs, since recreation shared space with academics and athletics prior to the expansion.
