1 PhD in Business Administratin PROGRAM OF STUDY Three Tracks t Chse frm Organizatins and Scial Change investigates hw the resurces and techniques f business can be harnessed t address scietal issues (first entering class scheduled fr fall 2012); Finance prvides training that facilitates innvatins and prvides tls fr research grunded in current practical prblems (starts in fall 2014); Management Infrmatin Systems shws ways t use IT fr sustainable business cmpetitive advantage and t slve business/scietal prblems with technlgical innvatins (starts in fall 2016). Curses During the first tw years f the prgram, students take multiple curses which serve as a fundatin fr research as well as appeal t individual research interests. These curses include a sequence f thery seminars in cre tpics. They als include statistics and research methds curses, bth quantitative and qualitative. Students take additinal prfessinal develpment and elective graduate curses in their areas f interest, fr a ttal f 14 curses. ADD URLs Teaching Students take a prfessinal develpment seminar training them in the thery and practice f teaching, which includes practice teaching under an experienced faculty member. In the third year, mst students teach ne sectin each semester f an undergraduate curse fr business students. Research Faculty mentring begins in the first year, sn after students enter the prgram. In their first year, students are assigned t a faculty member fr research guidance. Students als serve as research assistants during the first tw years in the prgram and they may wrk infrmally n ther prjects with faculty either self- initiated prjects r prjects faculty already have underway. Admissin t Candidacy The admissin-t-candidacy exam, cvering thery, methds and specialized area cntent, takes place at the end f the secnd year. The exam tests a student s synthesis f curse material and assesses readiness t undertake independent research as reflected in the dissertatin prpsal. Exact prtcl differs slightly amng the tracks. The time frm dissertatin prpsal t ral defense f the cmpleted prject is nrmally tw years, althugh sme students may be ready t defend their dissertatins after ne year. ***** CURRICULUM FOR THE ORGANIZATIONS AND SOCIAL CHANGE (OSC) TRACK The OSC curriculum cmbines theretical fundatins, research methds, prfessinal develpment, and tpical electives t prepare researchers t rigrusly pursue research questins that are valuable fr understanding cmplex business and scial phenmena. Our curriculum has a 4-4, 3-3 design, such that fur curses are taken each semester f the first year, and three curses are taken each semester f the secnd year, as students prepare fr their qualifying examinatin and dissertatin prpsal defense. In additin t this cursewrk, student learning happens thrugh clse wrking relatinships with faculty members, frmal research assistantships n specific research prjects, attending research seminars with invited speakers, and wrking n riginal research prjects during required summertime study. 2 Methds Curses (4) Prfessinal Develpment Curses (2) Electives (3) Thery Curses Our prgram ffers a rigrus fundatin in rganizatin thery, drawing upn the rt disciplines f ecnmics, plitical ecnmy, and scilgy. The thery curriculum prepares researchers t frmulate thughtful and imprtant research questins that advance ideas and practices, in academia and ther research settings. Our thery curses prepare students t recgnize a well-crafted thery that explains patterns in scial phenmena, t cmpare cmpeting theretical explanatins, t make cntributins t thery by expanding a theretical dmain r filling a gap in thery, t appraise critically where theries speak t ne set f plitical interests r anther, and t assess hw well a thery might guide practical actin. The field f rganizatinal studies increasingly emphasizes the imprtance f theries that span levels f analysis, frm individual and grup actin, t departmental r rganizatinal settings, t scietal, industry, and plicy cntexts. Instead f dividing ur theretical training alng the lines f levels f analysis, we integrate these levels in the quest fr rbust theretical explanatins. In training researchers t engage with cmplex rganizatinal and scial phenmena, we cnsider hw lcal actins and brader cntexts can bth enable and cnstrain ne anther. Our thery sequence has 5 curses: CM 700 Business in cntext: Markets, technlgies, rganizatins, and scieties. In this curse, students frm acrss ur tracks encunter the cmplex dilemmas in business tday, which span business disciplines. They learn abut the range f theretical appraches and methds that can be mbilized t understand and address these dilemmas. CM 750 Fundatins f rganizatin thery. This curse intrduces students t classic readings in rganizatin thery upn which the field is built (including readings by Weber, Marx, Gramsci, Guldner, Selznick, Perrw, Planyi, etc.). CM 751 Organizatins and scial change. This curse intrduces cntemprary studies that examine rganizatins as a setting thrugh which scial change can ccur. Theries cnsidered include institutinal thery, institutinal entrepreneurship, netwrk analyses, and scial mvements. The curse will engage critical and pstclnial appraisals f rganizatin thery and uncver the interests and perspectives that theries represent. Students will nt nly read finished papers, but will examine wrk-in-prgress and learn the prcess thrugh which research papers are revised. CM 760 Glbal and plitical ecnmy dimensins f rganizatins. This curse will prvide a critical analysis f liberal, neclassical, and radical perspectives n the rle f business in mdern sciety. Alternative theries f ecnmic grwth, histrical changes in pwer acrss natins, the rle f the state, the pwer f regulatry regimes, and the impact f idelgy will be cnsider. Glbal flws f labr, capital, and prducts will be traced and critically assessed in terms f prductivity, effectiveness, distributive justice, and envirnmental impacts. CM 897 Special Tpics: Organizatin thery and research. A wide range f tpics will reflect faculty and student interests in delving deeper. Research Methds Our research methds curriculum begins with a fundatins curse that emphasizes the imprtance f selecting an apprpriate research methd fr the research questin at hand. This curse emphasizes the use f multiple methds acrss and within the quantitative and qualitative research traditins. Students are encuraged t becme literate and critical readers f a wide range f methds and expert practitiners f a fcused set f methds. By scanning the methds emplyed in the field, students will begin t identify their wn preferred methds. All students are required t take ne quantitative and ne qualitative methds curse, t have a slid fundatin in each. Students are then urged t specialize in the methds they expect t use in their dissertatin and future research. CM 770 Intrductin t research methds fr the scial sciences. This curse will train students in selecting apprpriate methds fr investigating a research questin. We will explre a range f appraches t data, including psitivist, interpretive, and critical. Students will learn t read research

3 papers thrugh the eyes f reviewers and nte where imprvements can be made t tighten the flw frm thery t research design t cnclusins. CM 755 Qualitative methds. CM 775 Teaching and prfessinal develpment. Students will wrk n having presence and engaging an audience, with specific applicatins t teaching, giving prfessinal presentatins, and being persuasive n plicy matters infrmed by research. Students will develp a philsphy f teaching and prepare materials t enable them t start teaching undergraduates the next year. CM 891 Dissertatin preparatin seminar. This curse assists students in preparing the dissertatin prpsal, and in the design and data cllectin phases f the dissertatin prcess. 5 This curse cvers the rle f financial accunting in capital markets and reviews majr classic and cntemprary tpics. Thrugh this curse, students will learn hw t develp skills in designing and executing research prjects invlving financial accunting. CM 711: Accunting fr Finance II This curse builds n CM 710 and further investigates tpics in areas f value relevance f financial infrmatin, accunting anmalies and market efficiency, accunting chice, crprate disclsure, cntracting thery, and crprate gvernance. CM 720: Quantitative Financial Analysis I This curse cvers mathematical techniques applied t expected utility maximizatin and cnsumer thery, prfit and firm value maximizatin and prducer thery, welfare change measures and revealed preference thery. Emphasis will be placed n theries f barriers t entry, predatry pricing, R&D cmpetitin, and applicatins t trade thery. CM 721: Quantitative Financial Analysis II This curse cvers mathematical techniques applied t the fundatins f dynamic stchastic general equilibrium mdeling f the business cycle. Attentin will be placed n asset market behavir under cmplete and incmplete infrmatin sets and the cnsequences f agent hetergeneity. CM 722: Crss Sectin Analysis f Financial Data This curse prvides an understanding f the ecnmetric thery that underlies cmmn ecnmetric mdels. The fcus is n the single equatin regressin mdel and its many extensins. Tpics include finite and asympttic prperties f estimatrs, specificatin issues, autcrrelatin and heterskedasticity, endgeneity and simultaneity, and nnlinear mdel estimatrs including maximum likelihd and the generalized methd f mment. Special attentin is placed n applying the theretical tls t the crss-sectinal, lngitudinal panel data analysis in financial accunting and finance. CM 723: Time Series Analysis f Financial Data This is a curse in asympttic thery fr ecnmetric estimatin and inference, with emphasis n nnlinear, time series mdels. Tpics include frms f cnvergence, cnsistency and limiting distributin thery, maximum likelihd, linear and nnlinear least squares, generalized methd f mments, extremum estimatrs, nnparametric kernel estimatrs, and semi parametric estimatrs. The emphasis f this curse will be t intrduce students t time series data in financial accunting and finance. CM 730: Required Seminar in Crprate Finance This curse aims t prvide survey f bth thery and empirical wrk in mdern Crprate Finance. The primary tpics f the curse include: (i) Ability t raise cash in public securities markets and issuers chice f fltatin methd (ii) Capital structure and bankruptcy (iii) Valuatin effects f takever activity, surces f takever gains, and empirical investigatins f ptimal bidding theries fr cmpetitin preemptin (iv) Evlutin f gvernance systems arund the wrld. CM 731: Required Seminar n Financial Ecnmics The primary fcus this curse is t prvide a clear understanding f risk, return and arbitrage - the underpinning f any investment strategy. The primary tpics f the curse include: (i) Capital market equilibrium and security pricing (ii) Cmbining risky assets: principles f prtfli management (iii) Pricing f bnds and the management f interest rate risk (iv) Pricing f derivative securities: ptins and frward cntracts. CM 732: Required Seminar in Investment and Asset Valuatin This seminar prvides students with the basic theretical paradigms f cntemprary investments research and the mdern thery f asset valuatin. Tpics cvered include the relatinship between n-arbitrage cnditins and the existence f equilibrium prices. It als intrduces the students t multi-perid mdels in finance, mainly pertaining t ptimal prtfli chice and asset pricing - including prtfli chice and security prices in a cntinuus-time setting. Tpics cvered include the Black-Schles mdel f asset pricing, different mdels f the term structure f interest rates and valuatin f crprate securities.

Successful candidates will have excellent academic skills, strng cmmunicatin ability, superir standardized test scres, and undergraduate degrees r graduate training in business, a scial science, ecnmics r a related field. We als cnsider creativity, capacity fr independent thinking (demnstrated thrugh wrk r research), and fit with faculty research interests. Admissins are nce a year. The applicatin and sme f the related credentials are submitted nline. As a part f the applicatin, individuals must designate a single area f study frm amng the three tracks ffered by the Cllege f Management. The nrmal applicatin deadline fr admissin in September is January 15. Please nte that the clsing date fr pririty cnsideratin is earlier than the general university deadline fr admissin. Financial Aid The PhD prgram prvides merit-based financial aid t nearly all admitted students. We prvide fur years f funding, which includes tuitin and fee waiver, health insurance, and a living stipend. N additinal applicatin t the university fr financial aid is needed. We encurage students t apply fr additinal external surces f supprt when available. Students wh bring external funding with them at the time f admissin shuld specify this funding t the Graduate Prgram Office s that PhD prgram staff may cnsult with faculty and cnstruct a crdinated funding package.
