1 Central Australian Aboriginal Congress Position Description POSITION BRANCH/SECTION CHILDCARE BASE LEVEL & SALARY CONTRACT LOCATION PURPOSE OF POSITION Qualified Early Childhood Educator- Team Leader (PN403) Congress Child Care Level Level 4 Base salary range: $46,692 $52,172 p.a. Total Salary range: $54,265 - $60,452 (including super, leave loading and allowances) Salary Packaging options also available. Permanent-Full Time 37.5 hours per week Gap Road Alice Springs The primary focus of the position is to undertake the role of Qualified Early Childhood Team Leader within the Centre and to act as a mentor for other staff. The person in this position is expected to have a working knowledge of the Early Years Framework and an understanding of the new national standards together with the ability to apply the framework and standards as relevant to the job. REPORTS TO MANAGER CHILDCARE OVERVIEW of Central Australian Aboriginal Congress Aboriginal Corporation ( Congress ) and Work Environment Central Australian Aboriginal Congress Aboriginal Corporation (Congress) was formed in 1973 to support and advocate for Aboriginal people in the struggle for justice and equity. Since that time, Congress has expanded to become the largest and oldest Aboriginal Community controlled Health Service in the Northern Territory. Congress now provides a comprehensive primary health care service to the Aboriginal Community of Alice Springs and to outstations within a 100 kilometre radius. Today Congress encompasses nine (9) branches in total: 1. Directorate/Head Office 2. Corporate Services 3. Alukura (Women s Health) 4. Childcare (Ampe Kenhe Apmere) 5. Education & Training 6. Remote Health Services (RHS) 7. Social & Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) 8. Services 9. Male Health (Ingkintja) Ampe Kenhe Apmere, also known as Congress Child Care, is a Commonwealth funded Multi- Functional Aboriginal Children s (MAC) Service. The centre is licensed for 55 places and has three rooms: 0-2years, 2-3years and 3-5years. Staff rotate each year to provide continuity of care to the children attending the centre The service has a commitment to high quality, culturally appropriate child care. The staff supported and encouraged to undertake addition training to ensure that they keep abreast with current research, policies and changes within the industry.

2 For further information about Congress visit our website: KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. OPERATIONAL Education And Care Of Children: Work primarily with children in the 3-5 years or 0-2 years age group. Mentor knowledge and skills of other staff within the room allocated to ensure that teaching programs are based on current theory and practices. Maintain child records that documents personal and social growth, development, cultural context, learning and interests of children. Design, and implement curriculum that is unbiased, inclusive and relevant to each child and to Ampe Kenhe Apmere philosophy and goals. Question, evaluate and address how the curriculum is operating for individual children, groups of children, and families. Monitor and support the physical and personal care and well-being of children in the centre, and respond appropriately to issues of child protection. Treat all children equally and with respect for their gender, culture and diversity. Use positive guidance with children to support their self esteem, personal responsibility and choices, and access to learning. Use teaching strategies that support children in problem solving, creativity, and exploration of their personal and social interests. Administer medication and first aid as authorised. Parent Liaison: Mentor the knowledge and skills of other staff in their work with families. Promote an open exchange of information between children, families and the centre. Undertake informal and formal communication with families. Involve families and children in the design, implementation and evaluation of the program Maintain professional ethics in relationships with families, and confidentiality about family information at all times. 2. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: Report all issues that affect the operation of the service, the staff or families and the children to the Manager in a timely and efficient manner. Actively contribute to the team performance and the tasks of the centre including staff meetings, program reviews, quality assurance, occupational health and safety and other reporting systems. Identify and participate in professional development opportunities. Contribute support that builds professional skills and standards of staff and students. Contribute to the care and exchange of resources that enhance the learning program. Contribute to ensuring that all equipment is maintained following the Centre s policy and procedures. 3. ADMINISTRATION: Follow all CAACAC and Ampe Kenhe Apmere policies and procedures. Maintain accurate records of child illness, medication, accidents, child abuse,

3 attendance and Occupational Health and Safety issues and practices in accordance with Government Regulations and CAACAC and Ampe Kenhe Apmere policies and procedures. Follow procedures for advising the Child Care Manager of absences and take responsibility for completing all relevant forms for leave or payroll in a timely manner. 4. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY Act responsibly at all times to ensure the safety of self and others. Follow safe work methods and ensure compliance by others. Identify, report and respond appropriately to address hazards, accidents/incidents and ensure documentation is completed in a timely manner. Assist in workplace risk assessments. Undertake a share of housekeeping duties. 5. ACCOUNTABILITIES The Early Childhood Team Leader is accountable ultimately to the Child Care P Manager. Provide quality and professional service of care and work ethics at all times. Work within strict confidentiality guidelines, ensuring all personnel and/or client information is kept secure. 6. STAKEHOLDER RELATIONSHIPS Where required, liaise with a variety of allied Government and Non-Government agencies, representing Congress in a professional manner at all times. Maintain and contribute to a professional focus when dealing with all internal stakeholders. 7. CORPORATE & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Maintain the privacy and dignity of clients at all times. Act with tact and diplomacy when dealing with information of a highly sensitive nature. Work with an open, honest and transparent focus.

4 SELECTION CRITERIA Essential Criteria 1. Diploma in Children s Services or equivalent as recognised by the NT licensing authority. 2. Proven ability to interpret and apply information about how children learn and develop in practical ways 3. Ability to interpret and apply information provided about a diverse range of positive teaching strategies that meet the individual learning styles of the different children 4. Able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the Early Years Framework and an understanding of the changes to regulations and National Quality Standards 5. Ability to contribute as an active team member to all aspects of the functioning of Ampe Kenhe Ampere Congress Child care Centre 6. Ability to demonstrate leadership in a team environment 7. Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment 8. Excellent communication skills both oral and written 9. Recognised current first aid certificate/fire awareness or a willingness to obtain Desirable Criteria 1. Awareness of/sensitivity to Aboriginal culture and history, and knowledge of current issues affecting the lives of Aboriginal people 2. Current NT Drivers Licence, or ability to obtain one 3. Certified Supervisor s Certificate or ability to obtain same 4.
