1 Title: Speech Pathologist Little Yarns Remuneration: Above Award currently in line with NSW Health Professionals Award Conditions: Health Professionals and Support Services Award (2010) Hours: Various roles (as outlined in Information Package) Location: Office based in Mayfield, with travel to various locations across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens. Responsible To: Little Yarns Coordinator Last reviewed: June 2015 Approved by: General Manager 1. Summary of the broad purpose of the position The Speech Pathologist is employed by Firstchance to work within the Little Yarns Project across the Awabakal Early Childhood Services including at Wickham, Glendale, Toronto West, Fennel Bay and Woodberry. The Speech Pathologist works as a member of the Firstchance and Awabakal Early Childhood Services teams. They role involves utilising skills and knowledge of speech pathology and early intervention practice and mentoring staff of both services. The role provides quality, culturally appropriate Speech Pathology support to families and their children (aged 0-9) in both centre based and home visit settings through a family centred practice approach. 2. Reporting/Working Relationship The Speech Pathologist is responsible to the Program Manager for achieving the objectives set out in the position description and reports directly to and receives supervision from the Coordinator Little Yarns. Clinical supervision will be received from the Senior Speech Pathologist. The Little Yarns Speech Pathologist works closely with all staff related to the Little Yarns Project. 3. Qualifications Degree in Speech Pathology as recognised by Speech Pathology Australia. Page 1 of 6

2 4. Essential Requirements and Selection Criteria 1. Demonstrated capacity to engage with children living with a disability and their families, with the ability to build trust and good rapport 2. Knowledge of child development and early intervention practice, using a family centred and strengths based approach 3. Demonstrated understanding and/or experience working in a culturally responsive approach 4. Excellent listening and communication skills 5. Ability to work collaboratively and transparently in a multi or trans disciplinary team, including the ability and willingness to seek advice and information around best practice to achieve positive outcomes 6. Excellent organisational skills and effective time management 7. Ability to assess, diagnose and treat children aged 0-9 with communication, chewing and/or swallowing difficulties 8. Knowledge and/or experience in prescribing augmentative and assistive communication devices 9. Knowledge and/or experience in using visual aids to support the development of child communication 10. Demonstrated computer competency and use of Microsoft Office 5. Special Conditions Registration with Speech Pathology Australia Verified Working With Children Check National Police History Check Certificate First Aid, Anaphylaxis and Asthma Training Current Driver s Licence and use of own comprehensively insured car Willingness to participate in cultural, clinical and peer supervision Some travel throughout the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens areas Some out of hours work may be required Compliance with all current NSW Child Protection Legislation 6. 3 7. Main Tasks Associated with Key Role Responsibilities 1. Provide quality family centred Speech Pathology to families and their children Work as a multi-disciplinary team member providing assessment and advice, intervention and support to children and their families attending Awabakal & Muloobinba Early Childhood Services in both centre and home based settings Use evidence based methods to assess and review individual children s strengths, needs and progress Use a total communication system within the program e.g. spoken word, Key Word Signing, Photos/Pictures/Boardmaker to meet individual children s needs Provide information regarding the communication needs and strategies to assist the learning of children involved in Awabakal & Muloobinba Early Childhood Service programs Develop positive working relationships with families by sharing information as appropriate or as requested Provide education (through in-service /handouts / notice board) to assist families understand their child s communication needs Develop resources (handouts, visuals, presentations etc) for use by families, team members or other professionals that encourage development of knowledge and skills Discuss any assessment/review or observations/assessments of a child with team members and families and the recommended strategies upon request Consult with other agencies/professionals as required (in line with confidentiality) Provide evidence based training or workshops with children and their families 2. Work effectively with others in the Little Yarns Project and across the Awabakal & Muloobinba Early Childhood Services, including some work within a transdisciplinary team Work in collaboration with other employees, volunteers and students to ensure the effective running of the project Working in a transdisciplinary team under Firstchance Transdisciplinary ECIP Practice Guidelines Communicate & develop positive working relationships Make recommendations & referrals to other professionals and agencies where appropriate in consultation with Awabakal staff and Little Yarns Coordinator Work within the current policies and procedures of Firstchance, Awabakal & Muloobinba Early Childhood Services Carry out all duties & responsibilities within the framework of family centred practice, as described in the Firstchance Code of Conduct document in collaboration with the Awabakal & Muloobinba Early Childhood Specialist and Awabakal service coordinators Coach staff to develop an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) in consultation with the family, Awabakal staff, others involved with the child and Little Yarns Coordinator (as required) Maintain effective communication and feedback with all staff, Awabakal Early Childhood Specialist and Little Yarns Coordinator. Provide consultancy and support to all staff associated with the Little Yarns Project and Awabakal Early Childhood Services Provide consultancy support to staff about programming for children in groups, participating in all groups on a rotation Provide information regarding the communication needs of children involved in the programs as requested by Awabakal/Muloobinba and Little Yarns staff or as seen necessary in collaboration with Awabakal/ Muloobinba staff Provide appropriate assessment and review of a child s swallowing, communication or progress upon request from a child s family or teacher. Discuss with the child s family and or teacher the results of the assessment or review in collaboration with the Awabakal/Muloobinba staff member Provide a written report or feedback to families in collaboration with Awabakal/Muloobinba staff upon request Assist Awabakal staff to develop appropriate goals, objectives and teaching methods and strategies for a child s Individual Educational Program Consult with the Awabakal/Muloobinba Service Coordinator about issues of concern relating to individual children/families involved in the program Liaise with staff involved in the provision of speech pathology services within the Awabakal/Muloobinba Early Childhood Services as required Consult with other agencies as necessary to ensure the efficient organisation and management of the consultancy service 4. Provide training to both Little Yarns and Awabakal/Muloobinba Early Childhood staff and families as required Provide professional development for staff of the early childhood intervention program regarding communication, swallowing and audiological issues in consultation with the Awabakal/Muloobinba Early Childhood specialist staff and Little Yarns Coordinator Provide Hanen courses as required e.g. You Make the Difference/Learning Language and Loving it Attend Awabakal staff meetings as required to provide speech and language input and training as required or requested by services Provide information sessions to families as requested by Awabakal/Muloobinba Early childhood services coordinators as requested Undertake the clinical education and supervision of Speech Pathology students involved in a placement in the Little Yarns Project 5. Maintain quality documentation Record and maintain up to date individual observations & relevant information for each child as required Reflect strengths based practice principles in all documentation Provide documentation and support to assist in the transition process to another education setting as requested by Awabakal/Muloobinba and Little Yarns staff Provide written copies of each child s IEP, ISFP, school transition & developmental profiles as required Provide assessment and documentation to assist with submissions for funding for the Awabakal/Muloobinba services as requested by Awabakal/Muloobinba Coordinators and or Little Yarns Coordinator Ensure that appropriate permission forms are kept on file for each child Participate in the preparation, distribution and evaluation of surveys Page 4 of 6

5 Collate and forward to the Program Manager any information and documentation required for funding bodies or as requested by the Program Manager 6. Maintain and develop professional knowledge Actively participate in the Firstchance Staff Supervision and Support process Actively participate in cultural supervision opportunities Complete and review the courses that are set as compulsory by the Program Manager e.g. Child Protection regulations, WHS training. Meet individual training needs as identified in the annual staff goal setting and review process Attend agreed professional development opportunities 7. Maintain confidentiality Maintain the privacy of children, families, staff and Firstchance Maintain responsibilities under the Australian Privacy Principles Ensure permission has been granted by families before using a child s image or footage for any use by Firstchance or its stakeholders Ensure family permission has been obtained before disclosing information to any third parties (except where required under law, specifically in relation to child protection issues or concerns) 8. Work as an effective member of the Firstchance and Little Yarns teams Uphold the Firstchance Code of Conduct and Team Agreement Implement all Firstchance Policies and Procedures Participate in team meetings Actively participate in Firstchance Supervision and Support sessions with Little Yarns Coordinator and team Work collaboratively with other Firstchance Speech Pathologists and staff Participate in annual staff goal setting and review Provide information and support in preparing submissions to funding bodies Maintain knowledge of other Firstchance programs and team members Undertake other duties that contribute to the successful operation of Firstchance, the Early Childhood Intervention Program and Little Yarns. 8. Contribution to Organisational Goals and Quality Improvement To work within and uphold the philosophy, vision, mission, values and standards of Firstchance. Develop and implement an annual goal as part of the Little Yarns team to contribute to the success of the Firstchance Strategic Plan. To participate in quality improvement activities, this includes utilising Firstchance continuous quality improvement systems and practices and engaging in audits and reviews as required. Page 5 of 6

Work Health & Safety Requirements: - Develop and follow safe working procedures, think and work safely. - Be responsible for the safety of yourself, your clients, visitors and workmates. - Ensure that you adhere to appropriate safe working procedures and that you respond immediately to any reports of unsafe practices or procedures or hazards. - Keep up to date and fulfill all obligations of legislative requirements for staff. - Ensure all incidents, non-compliances and hazards are reported and acted upon according to the procedures. - Implement identified improvements effectively. - Report on any Child Protection, Work Health and Safety issues including risk assessments and other issues or concerns to the Program Manager.
