2 JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: REPORTING TO: ACCOUNTABLE TO: SALARY SCALE: HOLIDAYS: HEALTH: CHARACTER: HOURS OF WORK: WORKING WEEK: ETHICAL CODE: CONFIDENTIALITY: JOB PURPOSE Senior Clinical/ Counselling Psychologist Principal Psychologist Director of Nursing, AHP s & Quality/Chief Executive Officer Salary is as per HSE Department of Health and Children pay scales. 27 days per annum pro rata A candidate for and any person holding the office must be free from any defect or disease which would render him/her unsuitable to hold the office and be in a state of health as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to attend regular and efficient service. A candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character hours per week. Details of starting and finishing times, which may vary in accordance with Hospice needs, will be notified to you by your Principal Psychologist/Deputy. There will be times when you will be required to work outside of the normal office hours. Will be determined by the Principal Psychologist and the needs of the service. The post holder is requested to respect the special charism, ethos and tradition of Our Lady s Hospice and Care Services and comply with its general policies, procedures and regulations. All personnel employed in Our Lady s Hospice and Care Services are required to respect and uphold the principles enunciated in the Philosophy, Mission Values and Ethical Code of the Religious Sisters of Charity as they apply to the exercise of their duties and responsibilities. You will have access to various types of records/information in the course of your work. Such records and information are strictly confidential and unless acting on the instruction of an authorised person, on no account must information concerning staff, patients or other Hospital business be divulged or discussed except in the performance of normal duty. In addition, records may never be left in such a manner that unauthorised persons can obtain access to them and must be kept in safe custody when no longer required. The psychology service has a clinical, teaching and research remit across the palliative care section of Our Lady s Hospice and Care Services in Harold s Cross and Blackrock. The Senior Clinical /Counselling Psychologist will provide psychological education, assessment, and treatment services to the patients, carers and family members of the palliative care service. The Senior Clinical /Counselling Psychologists will under the management of the principal psychologist provide leadership in psychology and support the development of the 2
3 psychological services and ensure that service policies are integrated and aligned with the corporate management process. KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The successful candidate will contribute to a psychology service which meets best international standards in the following key areas: Provision of a clinical psychology service to patients / families of OLH&CS Palliative Care Services, Contribute to the management of the psychology service, Contribute to third level teaching and training of psychology in palliative care, Develop, support and deliver research in palliative care. Clinical Psychology Service To provide a range of psychology services for patients and family members as required including: cognitive, emotional, and behavioral assessment; treatment that includes a range of treatment modalities, report writing and psychological programme implementation and review. To work as a member of a multidisciplinary team providing an integrated and co-ordinated service to the families and to contribute to the development of integrated care plans. To provide psychological consultation on staff support and organisational mental health as required. Service Management To use all organisational management processes, PAS, case management, critical incidents review and performance management, To engage in clinical supervision with the Principal Clinical Psychologist, To ensure professional standards are met and to implement all service policies, To appropriately respond to adverse incidents within the department following due process in relation to root cause analysis and reporting to the risk review committee, To deliver continuous improvement within the department through defined change management process to achieve organisational objectives, To produce performance data for the psychology department. Education & / Professional Development To contribute to Third Level educational programs, Have capacity to provide academic supervision, To provide clinical supervision for Counselling and Psychotherapy students on placement, To actively engage in CPD and to maintain CPD logs and professional requirements for registration. 3
4 Research/Audit To be a member of the Health Care Audit committee in OLH&CS and to identify and develop tools to provide ongoing audit of current practice, To attend appropriate research meetings and to contribute the links that the Psychology Service has with the department of Education and Research, To contribute to and support research activity in the Psychology Service, To contribute to a research track in Mindfulness in Palliative Care. Information Technology To make the most effective and efficient use of developments in information technology for the Medical Officer role, in a manner which integrates well with systems throughout the organisation. Health and Safety: To maintain a safe work environment in co-operation with Our Lady s Hospice and Care Services Management Team, with reference to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, To ensure the safety of self, others and the maintenance of the environment and equipment used in the workplace in accordance with health and safety act and local policies and procedures. To be familiar with Our Lady s Hospice and Care Services policies, practices and procedures. To adhere to the policies and procedures laid down in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, To work in a safe manner with due care and attention to safety of self and other authorised persons in the workplace. To instruct assigned staff /students in safe working practices. To report immediately any accidents or incidents involving patients/residents, staff, students or members of the public to the Head of Department. 5 Person Specification Criteria Essential Desirable Qualifications All candidates must meet the graduate membership requirements of the Psychological Society of Ireland. Hold a recognised honours university degree in which psychology was taken as a major subject Have a recognised post graduate qualification in Clinical /Counselling Psychology Experience Five years post qualification clinical experience, inclusive of clinical placements. Experience with palliative or end of life patients in a hospital or hospice setting. Experience developing and delivering third level education. Experience in delivering staff support initiatives. Experience developing, managing and completing research Other Full drivers licence & own car Have Mindfulness training to teacher level at recognised training institute Experience teaching Mindfulness to a patient group Experience supervising Core Competencies Professional Knowledge & Skills: Interpersonal / Communication Skills: Disposition: Demonstrate the requisite clinical knowledge and ability including a high standard of suitability for the proper discharge of the duties and responsibilities of Senior Clinical Counselling Psyschologist Capacity to assess a wide range of psychological presentations Capacity to treat a wide range of psychological presentations Responsible, professional approach, respecting client confidentiality. Capacity to handle large amounts of data in a professional manner. Highly proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Ability to be flexible in service delivery. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to adapt to new environments/ situations/circumstances Capacity to communicate results of assessments to Multidisciplinary team Proven capacity for team work Under the guidance of the principal psychologist be able to demonstrate and apply previous experience of research and audit at postgraduate level or in the work environment Demonstrate a commitment to assuring high quality standards of service delivery Ability to handle conflict Capacity to emotionally engage with end of life work Demonstrate an understanding of the application of the core values and hospice approach to end of life Demonstrate a values driven approach to work Proven capacity to work in a multidisciplinary setting.
