1 ellenor JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Research Practitioner for adult West Kent Hospices RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Development and Quality ACCOUNTABLE TO: Head of Development and Quality WORKING HOURS: Full Time GRADE: Band 6 BASE: ellenor Gravesend with travel between West Kent Hospice sites as essential Job Summary This post is an essential component of a new collaborative programme to establish research capacity between the four adult hospices in West Kent: ellenor, Hospice in the Weald, Heart of Kent, and the Wisdom Hospice, hereafter referred to as the Collaborative. Working as an autonomous practitioner across the collaborative, the main focus of this post is to develop research governance and capacity. The post holder will: promote and deliver research within the field of palliative care, for the benefit of patients and their families. Establish effective links, communication pathways and funding streams to deliver a cohesive portfolio of clinical research studies. Identify research opportunities suitable for the Collaborative to deliver across West Kent Identify areas for future development, planning the resources as appropriate. Set up and deliver an agreed portfolio of research studies across the Collaborative. Key Working Relationships Internal within each Hospice Multidisciplinary clinical staff including Allied Health Professionals Research Leads Principal Investigators Patients and carers

2 External Clinical Research Network: Kent, Surrey and Sussex Kent and Medway Palliative Care Research Group Clinical Trials Units - relevant staff member Acute Trust Research and Development departments Acute Trust Palliative Care teams and Clinical Nurse Specialists Strategic Key Responsibilities 1. Build strong links with the Hospices in this collaborative by networking and liaising across all multi -professional teams at each site. 2. Establish areas of particular interest within each team to support the identification and promotion of potential research areas and associated local Principal Investigators 3. Establish training needs to support research development and delivery 4. Play a key role in the research governance group at each of the four Hospices, identifying a lead to represent their organisation at collaborative meetings. 5. Support meetings of West Kent Hospices to monitor progress of the collaborative project and identify priorities for study delivery, producing research activity reports as required. 6. Identify range of National, Regional and Local studies at various stages of development that match the interests of the Collaborative, building strong links with external trial sponsors and Chief Investigators. 7. Proactively raise the profile of the Collaborative Nationally, Regionally and Locally by utilising the skills of Collaborative members. 8. Be proactive in setting up sites as research ready, ensuring communication to all contributors, partners and stakeholders. 9. Support the coordination, preparation, submission of research proposals. 10. Ensure that all relevant approvals are in place prior to commencing each trial. Clinical Key Responsibilities 1. Set up, co-ordinate and manage agreed research studies. 2. Screen and identify eligible patients for recruitment to research studies liaising with the Principal Investigator and Research Associates. 3. Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and all Clinical Governance research requirements.

Act as a resource for patients, relatives, and other multi professionals concerning research studies, by updating and maintaining knowledge of patient pathways and clinical research protocols. 5. Act as a resource for and deliver training to other health professionals in order to assist with the screening and recruitment of eligible patients to research studies. 6. Liaise with Principal Investigator to ensure timely reporting of any adverse and serious adverse events, in accordance with research study protocols, and local / national research governance requirements. 7. Maintain Research Study Files, taking responsibility for the day to day project administration and document control, ensuring that documentation is completed as determined by the study protocol, GCP and Research Governance. Attend statutory and specialised training as required, and be aware of own education and training needs. Follow all relevant policies and procedures. 4 Person Specification Research Practitioner AREA ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE How tested Education /Qualifications Experience Current NMC Registration or equivalent qualification in health, science or social care 1 st Degree/Diploma in Nursing, Health, Science, Psychology or other relevant subject Evidence of professional development Minimum 3 years experience post qualification Experience of working in/with research projects Higher degree/al study of research design/methodology in clinical or social care setting Experience in the conduct of clinical trials or a relevant research environment Research project management experience Knowledge Knowledge of Research Governance Framework, Medicines for Human Use Regulations and Good Clinical Practice Working with electronic patient records Awareness and demonstrable understanding of palliative care Skills Ability to prioritise workload and manage own time effectively Ability to work autonomously, without supervision as well as ability to work within the team Excellent communication skills across professional diciplines and organisations Proven organisation skills Ability to travel between sites in a timely manner Competent with MS packages: Word, Excel & Skills test
