1 Role Title Purpose of the Role Department/Directorate Role Profile 0.5 wte Senior Occupational Therapist, Medicine for the Elderly (18.5 hrs per week) A Senior Occupational Therapist working in Medicine for the Elderly services will play a lead role in the provision of a high quality Occupational Therapy service to service users and assist in the operational and strategic management of the area. The Medicine for the Elderly team comprises 7.5 wte OTs and provides services to acute care, rehabilitation of the older person, residential care and an elderly day hospital. Grade Senior Occupational Therapist (half time) Salary Scale 50, , 208 (pro rata to contractual hours) Job Reference Number: 23301/14 Enquiries To: Ms. Aoife O Gorman, Occupational Therapist Manager, Ext: Closing Date Monday 4 th August, 2014 Key Duties and Responsibilities Be responsible for assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment / intervention programmes for service users according to professional standards and in line with organisational needs Collaborate with service user, family, carers and other staff in goal setting and treatment / intervention planning

2 Provide clinical leadership in the day-to-day running of the service by supporting and supervising staff, prioritising and allocating work and promoting positive staff morale Be responsible for maintenance of standards of practice of self and designated staff In conjunction with the Occupational Therapy Manager and MedEl Team Leader, contribute to the development and implementation of procedures, policies and guidelines while adhering to existing standards and protocols Work closely with MedEl Team Leader in both operational and strategic management of MedEl service To participate in own professional supervision with Occupational Therapy Manager To critically evaluate interventions and to ensure the service implements evidence-based practice. To participate in regular standard setting, outcome measurement, clinical audit and research. To contribute to the development of the Occupational Therapy service within this speciality Responsible for the professional and clinical supervision of Occupational Therapy assistants and assistance with the ongoing training of assistants Education and Training Maintain and develop professional expertise and knowledge by actively engaging in continuing professional development e.g. reflective practice, by attending and presenting at in-service events, training courses, conferences, professional courses or other courses relevant to practice, participating in research etc. Manage, participate and play a key role in the practice education of student therapists and promote and engage in the teaching / training / support of others as appropriate. To supervise Occupational Therapists and other departmental staff that may be assigned to the area and to provide professional supervision in accordance with the Occupational Therapy departmental policy. To keep abreast of current developments in Medicine for the Elderly and the implications that they may have for clinical practice. **The above Role Profile is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all duties involved and consequently the post holder may be required to perform other duties as appropriate to the post which may be assigned to him/her from time to time and to contribute to the development of the post while in office. **Should service demands change this post may be subject to rotation. The Occupational Therapy Manager reserves the right to rotate staff as and when appropriate. Academic/Professional Qualifications Required: Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Dublin; OR The Diploma of the College of Occupational Therapy; OR An equivalent qualification recognised by W.F.O.T. AND

3 Have at least three years satisfactory post qualification experience Please note that under EU regulations, those holding a qualification obtained outside the Republic of Ireland may not be employed in the Irish Health Service unless the qualification obtained has been validated/registered by the National Validation Project. Information on the validation process can be obtained from Evidence of such validation, or evidence of having applied for such validation, must be submitted with your application form. Otherwise, your application will be deemed ineligible. Technical/Clinical Competencies Required: Possesses proven clinical experience in the management of an older person s client group and demonstrates proficiency in relevant evidence-based rehabilitation methods/interventions Demonstrates the ability to critically appraise treatment interventions and demonstrates a commitment to implementing up to date evidence based practice. Participates in the ongoing evaluation and development of OT service provision in collaboration with the team leader and OT manager via participation in clinical audit and service review to improve practice. Desirable Experience in the professional supervision of staff grade therapists and/or occupational therapy assistants Has participated in clinical research relevant to service needs

5 Proficiency in the English language A level of proficiency in the English language, written and spoken, is a requirement of all roles within St. James s Hospital. You will be required to self assess your proficiency level in the Standard Application Form. In addition, your proficiency in spoken English will be assessed during the interview process appropriate to the role available. Particulars of Office 1. The appointment is part time, permanent and pensionable 2. Annual Leave allowance is 26 days pro rata to contractual hours.(please note that annual leave allowances may be amended in line with directives from the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform in accordance with the Standardisation of annual leave and related allowances in the public sector) 3. The person appointed must not give less than one month s notice, in writing, of intention to resign. 4. Normal hours of duty hours per week 5. You will be required to work the agreed roster / on call arrangements advised to you by your line manager. Your contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8.00am - 8pm over seven days to meet the requirements for extended day General Conditions 1. All accidents within the department must be reported immediately. 4. In accordance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at work act 1989, all staff must comply with all safety regulations. 5. In line with the Tobacco Regulations Act 1990 Smoking within the hospital buildings is Not Permitted. Such records and information are strictly confidential and unless acting on the instructions of an authorised officer, on no account must information concerning staff, patients or other health service business be divulged or discussed except in the performance of normal duty. In addition records must never be left in such a manner that unauthorised persons can obtain access to them and must be kept in safe custody when no longer required.
