INESC TEC INESC Technlgy and Science, Assciate Labratry 1. THE INSTITUTION INESC Technlgy and Science r the abbreviatin, INESC TEC is an Assciate Labratry that has been recgnised by the Ministry f Educatin and Science in Prtugal. This is the highest level f recgnitin awarded fr Science and Technlgy in Prtugal. INESC TEC is crdinated by the Institute fr Systems and Cmputer Engineering f Prt (INESC Prt), a private and independent nn-prfit assciatin, recgnised as a Public Interest Institutin, with ver 25 years f experience in fundamental and applied science and cperatin with industry. INESC Prt is als recgnised as a Technlgical Infrastructure by the Ministry f the Ecnmy in Prtugal. INESC Prt s assciates include the University f Prt (principally the Faculties f Science and Engineering) INESC (based in Lisbn) and the Plytechnic Institute f Prt (including the Higher Educatin Institute f Engineering in Prt). The University f Minh is als a privileged partner. INESC TEC cnsists f the Research and Develpment (R&D) Units f INESC Prt, tgether with the autnmus Assciate Units. As the figure belw illustrates (identifying the areas f specialisatin), INESC TEC incrprates 12 Units in ttal and brings tgether clse t 600 cllabrates and 200 PhD hlders. INESC TEC manages an annual budget f arund 12.5 millin Eurs and its main surce f incme and prjects cmes frm cntracts with cmpanies, fllwed by Eurpean and natinal prjects frm prgrammes ffered by the Eurpean Unin r the Prtuguese gvernment. As an institute that wrks as an interface between universities and industry, INESC TEC develps activities that begin with the generatin f knwledge and cnclude with technlgy transfer and valrisatin. The institute s structure fllws the metaphr fr a prductin chain f knwledge-value and extends the actin f cnducting fundamental science and develping prttypes, carrying it thrugh t the launching f spin-ff cmpanies and the prvisin f advanced internatinal cnsultancy services. As a result f its reputatin as an independent, impartial and trustwrthy institutin, INESC TEC has prvided internatinal cnsultancy services in fur different cntinents: Eurpe, Nrth America, Suth America, (particularly in Brazil) and Africa. INESC TEC als participates in training and advanced training prgrammes, particularly fr dctral students, in partnership with prestigius universities, such as MIT Carnegie Melln and the University f Texas at Austin. INESC TEC s activity cvers multiple areas and can be applied in varius markets, fr example, Telecmmunicatins, Health, Industry, Services and Public Administratin. The Pwer Systems Unit Experience and knw-hw in distributed generatin, planning system expansin and peratin, markets and regulatin, reliability and security f supply, dynamics and stability, sftware and dispatch and cntrl centres, renewable energy, frecasting, smart grids and the integratin f electric vehicles. 2. THE POWER SYSTEMS UNIT The Pwer Systems Unit (USE) is INESC TEC s main actr in the area f electrical energy. The Unit emplys clse t 70 cllabratrs, including 16 PhD hlders. It is internatinally recgnised fr its expertise in prblems relating t the integratin f wind pwer and renewable energy in general in pwer systems. USE is als recgnised in the areas f distributed generatin and smart grids, areas traditinally assciated with planning and perating pwer systems and designing and develping sftware fr dispatch and cntrl centres. This high level f expertise has allwed specialists at USE t take n key rles in imprtant Eurpean Unin prjects as part f the successive framewrk prgrammes that led t ntable scientific and technical advances with cnsiderable impact n industry. Furthermre, this recgnitin f the Unit s capabilities has led t cntracts fr develpment and cnsultancy with cmpanies manufacturing equipment, generatin, transmissin and distributin cmpanies, regulatrs, gvernment agencies and investrs. These activities have been develped in Eurpe, Suth America (particularly Brazil), the United States f America and Africa (particularly in Prtuguese-speaking African cuntries). INESC TEC s enhanced cmpetencies in this area nt nly cme frm its high level f prfessinalism in its wrk but als frm its glbally recgnised elevated level f science. INESC TEC s cllabratrs include varius specialists that are IEEE Fellws and its teams regularly publish wrks in the mst highly regarded internatinal scientific publicatins. These specialists have cntributed t varius different areas, helping t advance knwledge and techniques with ideas, methds and algrithms which have later been adpted by industry. USE has fundamental calculating and simulatin cmputatinal equipment and develps technical activities at its Micrgrids and Electric Vehicle labratries. It is internatinally recgnised fr its expertise in ptical fibre sensrs, imaging and micrfabricatin (integrated ptics, new materials, thin films and phtvltaics). The high level f expertise at the Unit can be seen thrugh the elevated number f articles they have published and thrugh their ability t transfer technlgy and generate spin-ff cmpanies (Fibersensing). Fibersensing is a wrld leader in ptical fibre sensr systems. The cmpany uses technlgy develped at UOSE in its electricity generatrs that it prvides fr the largest manufacturers wrldwide, including Airbus, the TGV railways lines in Eurpe and il drilling. The Unit basts advanced labratries, including a clean rm where prjects can be cnducted with the manufacture f small series using depsitin technlgy, such as spluttering r laser ablatin.
