3 PREAMBLE 'Business' is a business studies ptin within the established Leaving Certificate prgramme. It is cncerned with the understanding f the envirnment in which business perates in Ireland and in the wider wrld. It als invlves equipping the students with a psitive view f enterprise and its applicatins in the business envirnment, in bth the public and private sectrs. The principles n which this syllabus has been prepared are as fllws: A cmmn syllabus at higher and rdinary levels t fulfil the aims and bjectives f the curse. A curse structured t prvide cntinuatin frm, and develpment f, Business Studies at Junir Certificate; hwever, it can als be studied 'ab initi'. A flexibility f design that caters fr present-day Irish business educatin and yet is capable f adaptatin t future develpments in a structured and efficient way. The capability f being taught within apprximately 180 hurs. The preparatin f students fr further educatin and fr adult and wrking life, Including the creatin f psitive attitudes twards self-emplyment. 3
4 Business syllabus Intrductin Aims T cntribute t a balanced and apprpriate general educatin, leading t the persnal and scial develpment f students thrugh a study f business and enterprise. T encurage initiative and self-reliance in each student. T develp a clear understanding f the rle f enterprise, t encurage the develpment f apprpriate enterprise learning skills, and t generate in students a psitive and ethical attitude t enterprise in persnal, business and public life. T develp a critical understanding f the verall envirnment in which business functins. T help prepare students fr participatin in a changing business envirnment fr adult and wrking life and als as a basis fr further educatin. Objectives T develp students' literacy, numeracy, prblem-slving and cmmunicatin skills and t develp an attentin t detail in the presentatin f infrmatin. T develp an understanding f the structures, institutins, prcesses and management f business. T enable students t make infrmed business decisins. T enable students t use established cmmercial principles and knwledge, t critically evaluate cmmercial infrmatin, and t ffer slutins t given cmmercial prblems. T prmte a psitive awareness f cultural and scial diversity in internatinal business. T enable students t understand and appreciate ethics in business. Nte A general bjective is given at the beginning f each sectin m prvide an verview f the area. The learning utcmes prvide the specific cntext n which each sectin is based. Assessment The syllabus will be assessed in relatin t the syllabus bjectives, initially thrugh a written terminal examinatin. A variety f questining techniques will be used, and a flexible and varied apprach will be taken t the style f questining in the written examinatin. 4

At Ordinary level, candidates will be required t: recall and demnstrate a knwledge and understanding f the syllabus cntent. In additin, Higher level candidates will be required t: demnstrate a greater depth f knwledge and understanding f the cncepts and issues than Ordinary level candidates, as well as a greater prficiency in applicatins and analysis; apply the business terms, cncepts and theries t address prblems and issues; select rganise, interpret and use infrmatin supplied; evaluate evidence, make reasned judgements and present cnclusins accurately and apprpriately.
