The manufacturing sectr emplyed 31 millin persns in 2009, generated billin Eur f turnver and billin Eur f value added. 3 Manufacturing matters Eurpean manufacturing is a dminant element f internatinal trade EU-27 exprted manufactured gds t the value f EUR billin in Extra-EU trade in manufactured gds resulted in a trade surplus f EUR 174 billin in Manufacturing is an R&D&I intensive activity (Surce: External and intra-eurpean Unin trade, Mnthly statistics, 12/2011) In 2006, the R&D expenditure just in the Mechanical Engineering sectr in EU-10 was $ 8,323 millin. In 2007, the manufacturing sectr received the greatest share f business enterprise R&D expenditure in mst f the EU-27 cuntries. 4 Manufacturing - pwerhuse f the EU ecnmy In 2011, manufacturing accunted fr 23% f emplyment and 22% f value added in the nn-financial business ecnmy. It is estimated that fr every jb in manufacturing a further cmplementary jb is needed in related business services, such as lgistics, marketing r legal advice. Manufacturing has als been the main driver f prductivity grwth. Frm 2000 up t 2007 the average prductivity grwth std at arund 3%, cmpared t the average fr ttal ecnmy at 1%. Industry is clearly a driver f knwledge-based ecnmy, being respnsible fr sme 80% f private R&D. 7 The Cmmunity A Research Assciatin Its key bjective is t prmte pre-cmpetitive research n prductin technlgies within the Eurpean Research Area As a MANUFUTURE initiative, EFFRA has been engaged in shaping and implementing the Factries f the Future (FF) Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in cperatin with the Eurpean Unin.
