1 BSc (Hns) Civil Engineering Curse cntent The BSc (Hns) Civil Engineering curse is designed arund the cre themes f the prfessinal accrediting bdies and the mdules yu study are designed t develp yur general understanding f civil engineering in its bradest cntext, whilst fcusing n the applicatin and management f current technlgies. The curse als aims t develp yur key skills and t prduce highly cmpetent graduate engineers. Year One In yur first year yu will be intrduced t civil engineering thrugh the Civil Engineering Design Prjects mdule. The mdule will draw upn cre material delivered in the fur ther Year One mdules tgether with develping knwledge and skills in cnstructin, architectural/building technlgy, CAD, health & safety, the envirnment and cmmunicatin skills. The prject essence f this mdule is strngly supprted by the Engineering Surveying mdule that incrprates a week lng residential surveying field curse where the practical surveying skills required by the cnstructin industry, alng with teamwrk and management skills, will be develped. During Year One the curse team aim t develp yur mathematical tlbx and t increase yur ability and cnfidence in applying mathematical cncepts in an engineering envirnment. Yu will als be intrduced t the main materials used within the cnstructin industry and their prperties. Year One mdules Civil Engineering Design Prjects (40 credits) This mdule will intrduce yu t the rganisatin f the cnstructin industry and the key rles played by civil engineering prfessinals. Yu will develp yur knwledge f and skills in the fllwing: Cnstructin techniques Cmputer-aided design Health and safety The envirnment Sustainability The cnstructin industry Simulated wrk situatins will be used t develp yur key cmmunicatin skills. This mdule will integrate a number f civil engineering disciplines thrugh prject wrk. This will be supprted by key-fcus lectures, seminars and practical studi sessins. Sketching and CAD skills will be develped thrugh cmputer wrkshps, studi-based teaching and prject-based assignments. Assessment in 100% based prject-based cursewrk. Engineering materials (20 credits) Thrughut this mdule yu will be intrduced t the materials encuntered in civil engineering and general cnstructin. Yu will develp an understanding f the implicatins f material prperties in practical applicatins. The mdule addresses the fllwing areas: Created August
2 Gelgy Sil mechanics Materials: steel, cncrete, bricks and ceramics, rganics and design prblems The mdule is delivered thrugh a series f lectures supprted by seminars and labs. 50% f yur final mark will be assessed thrugh a 2-hur frmal examinatin. The remaining 50% will be assessed thrugh lab reprts and shrt class assignments. Engineering Surveying (20 credits) During this mdule yu will develp yur skills in using standard surveying instrumentatin. These skills will be used alngside the assciated field and ffice prcedures fr the preparatin f site plans, setting ut, cntrl f cnstructin wrks and the measurement f existing buildings. Lectures and tutrials will be used t develp the thery and basic numerical/data prcessing applicatins f the subject area. These will be supprted by seminars and lab sessins which will intrduce and develp the practical surveying field skills required by industry. 50% f yur final mark is assessed by a frmal 2-hur examinatin. 40% f the final mark will be assessed thrugh activities undertaken n the residential surveying field curse. The remaining 10% f yur mark will be assessed by cursewrk assignments and thrugh practical sessins. Residential field curse The mdule will culminate in a ne-week residential field trip where yu will wrk in grups t develp the skills yu have learnt thrughut the mdule. Grups will wrk under limited supervisin t plan, manage and assess their wn prgramme t meet set targets. A range f typical engineering surveying instrumentatin will be used t prduce a site plan, set ut simulated cnstructin wrks and t measure existing structures. Intrductin t Structural Engineering (20 credits) This mdule aims t prvide yu with revisin in relevant statics and a quantitative and qualitative appreciatin f the behaviur and design f beams and triangulated framewrks. The mdule cvers the fllwing areas: Statics Pin-jinted framewrks Beam structures and ladings Sectin analysis Cmbined axial and bending elastic stresses Intrductry timber design A grup prject invlving the interpretatin f a design brief, analysis, design, cnstructin and testing f a structural mdel The mdule is delivered thrugh a series f lectures, supprt seminars, labs and a design, make and break prject week. Mathematics (20 credits) This mdule aims t give yu a thrugh intrductin f mathematics and statistics. It will imprve and develp yur applicatin f number in typical civil engineering tasks. The areas cvered include the fllwing: Arithmetic and units Gemetry f simple shapes and figures Manipulatin f algebraic equatins Trignmetry Index equatins Descriptive and summary statistics Mensuratin and measurement C-rdinate gemetry Algebra Calculus The mdule is delivered thrugh weekly lectures and tutrials. Year Tw mdules Building Technlgy applied t Civil Engineering (20 credits) This mdule will primarily intrduce yu t the principles underlying the cnstructin f the superstructure f buildings fr cmmercial, industrial and institutinal use. It will als examine the technlgical and legislative influences upn building design and cnstructin methds. Additinally yu will lk at envirnmental sustainability and influences n multi-strey cnstructin. The mdule is based arund a series f frmal lectures supprted by seminars and critiques. Assessment is 100% based n yur design prtfli. Cnstructin Practice and the Envirnment (20 credits) The aim f this mdule is t imprve yur knwledge f practice within the cnstructin industry and yur appreciatin f the rles and respnsibilities that yu may undertake in yur placement year and beynd. Within this mdule there is sme scpe t fllw yur wn interests thrugh independent study. The mdule allws yu t recgnise and investigate grund related prblems and hazards. The mdule is delivered thrugh a series f lectures accmpanied by tutrials and lab sessins. 50% f yur final mark will be assessed by a 2-hur written exam. 6 This mdule aims t prvide yu with an intrductin t the structural behaviur f elements in reinfrced cncrete and steelwrk. Yu will lk at factrs influencing the design f reinfrced cncrete structural elements. Yu will examine the behaviur f reinfrced cncrete beams in flexure and shear, and the behaviur f shrt-braced reinfrced cncrete clumns. The mdule will intrduce yu t cncrete detailing and the factrs affecting the design f structural elements in steelwrk t limit state criteria. The mdule is delivered thrugh a series f lectures, seminars, labs and design studi activities. 60% f yur final mark fr this mdule will be assessed by a 2-hur frmal exam. 7 Final year The Final Year explres issues such as peple management, finance and transprtatin issues, tgether with the prfessinal mrals and ethics side f the cnstructin industry. Yu have the pprtunity t develp an area f persnal civil engineering interest thrugh yur Individual Prject. Further aspects f structural engineering in terms f Eur-cdes fr structural design will be intrduced, as well as the envirnment and sustainability themes being develped. Individual with Grup Prject (40 credits) This mdule aims t develp yur ability t interpret and develp prject briefs and analyse the cncepts and slutins related t the brief. It allws yu t demnstrate initiative, creativity and innvatin in the develpment f slutins t civil engineering related prblems. The individual prject is a bdy f wrk prviding yu with the pprtunity t independently research an agreed area f interest within the cnstructin industry. During the grup prject yu will develp a civil engineering related scheme in respnse t an initial design brief. As part f a grup yu will plan, participate in and reprt yur slutin, develping yur cmmunicatin skills, teamwrk and time management. The individual prject will be supprted by lectures, presentatin sessins and individual supervisin meetings. The grup prject will be intrduced thrugh lectures, seminars and ptential site visits. Yu will then wrk in grups t research, develp and present yur scheme design t an external jury. 75% f yur final mark fr this mdule will be assessed n yur individual prject thesis and assciated presentatins. The remaining 25% f yur mark will be based n the grup prject and its assciated individual cmpnents. Management and Transprtatin Studies (20 credits) The tw themes f this mdule aim t braden yur experience within the civil engineering discipline. Management studies intrduces and develps aspects f management thery and practice within the cnstructin industry and business in general. Yu will examine the plitical, ecnmic, scial and envirnmental cntext fr civil engineering and ther cnstructin wrk and cnsider stakehlder perspectives. Further Structural Engineering (20 credits) This mdule will braden yur knwledge f the cnceptual design f structural elements. It will als give yu an intrductin t the factrs that affect the stability f framed building structures and the cmmn methds used t ensure their rbustness. Yu will als be intrduced t Eurcdes fr the design f structural elements in reinfrced cncrete and structural steelwrk. Assessment and delivery This mdule will be delivered thrugh a cmbinatin f lectures, seminars and design studi activities. 60% f yur final mark will be assessed by a 3-hur exam. The remaining 40% f yur mark will be assessed by design prject wrk. Grund Engineering, Water Resurces and the Envirnment (20 credits) Within this mdule yu will study the thery and applicatin f getechnical, envirnmental and water resurce issues within civil engineering. Yu will learn t analyse sme typical engineering prblems invlved in the management f fundatins, getechnical structures, water supplies and assciated fluid principles. Assessment and delivery This mdule will be delivered thrugh a series f lectures supprted by seminars, labs and site-visits. 60% f yur final mark fr the mdule will be assessed by a 3-hur exam. The remaining 40% will be assessed by a series f cursewrk and lab reprts. Prfessinal Respnsibilities and Develpment in Civil Engineering (20 credits) This mdule is based arund fur themes: Health, safety and welfare The prfessin and wider sciety Clients, stakehlders, cmmunities and gvernment Sustainability Within the health, safety and welfare strand yu will examine the develpment f current UK and EU legislatin and lk at the relevant aspects f civil and criminal law. Yu will cnsider the identificatin, assessment, adaptatin and management f hazards and risks and lk at the rle and respnsibilities f the Health and Safety Executive and the duty f care f clients, cnsultants and cntractrs. The prfessins and wider sciety theme will lk at the develpment and future prspects f civil engineering. Other build envirnment rganisatin and prfessins will be cnsidered alng with ethics and values.
