February 2014 Direct from the Director By Jeff Dawson As we move further into the New Year I would like to remind you of two upcoming programs from our outstanding Local History Alive series and three equally enticing programs from our Scholar for Life Series. We have two new upcoming Local History Alive sessions. Local History Alive highlights events, institutions, and Manitowoc County history presented by local experts: Monday, February 17, 2014 Theresa Kronfrost will present Schroeder s Department Store. Schroeder s has been a part of the history of Two Rivers since 1891, the same year the Joseph Mann Public Library (now the Lester Public Library) opened their doors. Take the opportunity to learn about one of the country s oldest independent department stores; still owned by the Schroeder s family and operating out of the same building. Monday, March 17, 2014 -The Maritime Museum staff will present The History of Your Maritime Museum. Water defines our community and the rich traditions from commercial fishing, submarine manufacturing during World War II to modern day Berger Boats gives a sense of place and meaning to our lives. We have three Scholar for Life Series 2014 offerings. This public lecture series is a partnership between the UW-Manitowoc and the Lester Public Library. The series meets the missions of both institutions, in essence, providing access to lifelong learning that enhances our lives and community. Thursday, March 27, 2014 Assistant Professor of History Dr. Christopher Stone will present Field of Dreams: The Image of the Sixties in American Cinema. This was the topic for Dr. Stone s dissertation. His preparation for writing on Sixties cinema included watching over 700 films. Revisit the 1960 s in a unique and provocative way, through filmmaking. Discover how Sixties filmmakers broke away from the staid, conformist filmmaking of the Fifties. Thursday, April 24, 2014 Associate Professor of Mathematics Dr. Brian Murphy takes mathematics to a new level with The Invention of Calculus: A Soap Opera 1700s Style. In the late 1600s, a feud erupted between two prominent mathematicians, Isaac Newton from Britain and Gottfried Leibniz from Germany. Their feud, which revolved around who "rightfully" invented calculus, divided the mathematicians in Europe into two camps and forever changed the face of mathematics. Thursday, May 8, 2014 Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Maureen Crowley will take us on a psychological journey with The Search for Consciousness. Science can t pin down consciousness, making it one of the last, great unsolved mysteries. Dr. Crowley wraps up season three with a challenging look into the human psyche. I m sure you ve been wondering what all those black boxes are behind the circulation desk. We call these Pods and they hold our DVDs and young adult CDs. You may have noticed that our DVDs are no longer stored inside the case. We tried keeping the discs in the cases for a while but there was a problem with theft. These popular collections are now stored in the Pods and each Pod holds 150 discs. We have a total of 42 Pods. This means that there are a whopping 6,300 discs stored behind the circulation desk! We no longer have to worry about putting the disks back into the right slot, we just scan the case and the pods do it for us! Not only do the Pods offer a quick storage and retrieval system, but you can play Guess the Pod to win a $1.00 off fines coupon. Just tell the desk attendant that you want to guess which Pod your disc will pop out of at checkout. You may check out a total of 7 DVDs on your card for 7 days. That means you could have up to 7 chances to win! DVDs must be checked out at the front desk, but young adult CDs can be checked out at the selfcheck machines. Just be sure to bring the cases to the front desk for the discs before you leave!

Voluntary Simplicity 5 Week Course Beginning Wednesday, February 5 6:00-7:30 PM Discover new ways to live an enriched life through the practice of Voluntary Simplicity. This course created by the Northwest Earth Institute, offers participants a chance to look at alternatives to the fast pace of mainstream culture. In each class, participants will share without debate or argument, as they take part in a simple and well-designed process led by a mentor. Thought provoking questions provide for lively personal responses. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend each class. There is a $26.00 fee to cover the cost of the course book. I like playing the guess the pod game with them to help keep them entertained while they are checking out. What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work? Crafts making Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls from scratch, gardening/landscaping, and reading Jonathan Kellerman books. What is your favorite library moment? Hearing about people s day, getting to share what s important to them. I felt especially honored to hear one particular story about how an elderly couple had celebrated a very special anniversary. What other jobs have you held? Before working at the library, I worked in custom home sales; then at Point Beach Nuclear Plant in the Training and Emergency Preparedness departments. Have you always lived in Two Rivers? I grew up in Kewaunee on a farm, married a Two Rivers boy, and lived in rural Manitowoc County for years. We moved into the city of Two Rivers about 12 years ago. What are you reading right now? Evidence by Johnathan Kellerman - I love his Alex Delaware series. I am also a fan of LPL s Overdrive e-books! Infants and their caregivers will share nursery rhymes, songs, and books but also get a chance to make fun projects that demonstrate the babies developmental milestones. Many projects and activities will emphasize the importance of reading to babies AND parents will learn how to do this most effectively. Each instructor will also share insight about infant development and parenting. The class concludes with a free play period. Program meets once a week for 6 weeks. Milwaukee Bucks Reading Program Ends February 27! The Milwaukee Bucks Reading Challenge is open to all children in 3rd-10th grades. Score a point for each page you read from a book, magazine or newspaper. Read 500 pages to become an All-Star Reader.
