3 Magic Workshop Magic is more than just fun and entertaining, the skills learned in the execution of magic and illusion allow you to communicate more effectively, develop listening and reacting skills, create confidence and give a young artist the ability to see that anything is possible. Take It From The Top This professional Broadway workshop was designed by Broadway veterans Paul Canaan (Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde, Thoroughly Modern Mille, La Cage Aux Folles, Miss Saigon) and Tony Nominee Laura Bell Bundy (Legally Blonde, Wicked, Hairspray and Ruthless). Take It From The Top is a unique opportunity to spend the week learning from a talented team of experienced Broadway professionals and casting directors. Students explore the triple threat performing arts disciplines of music, dance and theater. Our camps are a safe place to explore new ideas and hone your skills. A final recital will showcase the work students have done for an invited audience of family and friends. If you re interested in pursuing a career in musical theater, this is your chance to explore the process of casting, auditions, rehearsals and performance and network with professionals in the industry. Students should prepare and bring sheet music for an age-appropriate musical theater song. Your appreciation and understanding of the art of illusion will grow as you experience the various styles of magic, discover the most famous magicians in history and be able to analyze, understand and execute the important elements that make a great magic performance. At the conclusion of the workshop you ll be able to perform amazing tricks in almost any situation with everyday objects; perfect for any place, whether it s your office, classroom or dining room table. 4 Applications and Acceptance for Jazz Music Intensive Students must submit a YouTube video audition to the Director of Education, Dana Brazil at dana@drphillipscenter.org. Video submissions will be accepted through May 1, Visit the Dr. Phillips Center website for detailed audition requirements and instrument preparation, or contact classes@drphillipscenter.org. Jazz Music Intensive Workshop with Rodney Whitaker Jazz will be hot under the direction of Rodney Whitaker, along with national and regional jazz education greats. The six-day session is made up of big band rehearsal, combos, studio class, jazz history, listening and improv. The Jazz Music Intensive wraps up with three performances; a Thursday evening jazz faculty performance, a Friday evening student big band performance and a Saturday afternoon combo performance. Internationally renowned bassist and Mack Avenue recording artist, Rodney Whitaker currently holds the title of Professor of Jazz Bass and Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, where he has built one of the leading jazz degree programs and performing faculty in the United States. A proven and committed jazz educator, Whitaker has presented numerous master classes across the nation and is a consultant with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in the development of the jazz education department, and has served on the faculties of University of Michigan and Julliard Institute of Jazz. 5 Theater Arts Camp Theater is about the art of play creating a world from your imagination and the text given to the actor. In a nurturing and supportive environment students will explore improvisation, drama, theater games and script work. Theater Arts Camp encourages you to imagine, perform and reflect on real or imagined experiences making the connection between the magical worlds of theater and creativity. An emphasis on personal expression, creative imagination, confidence and socialization will be explored. July 13-17, 2015 > 9 am - 4 pm July 17, 2015 > 7 pm Theater Arts Showcase Ages: 7-11 Tuition: $275 for pre-registration, $300 after May 15, 2015 Capacity: 50 participants Dance Intensive Workshop This week long dance intensive is designed to bring out the passion of the dancer through technique, vocabulary, leaps, and creative choreography. You will work on modern, contemporary, jazz and ballet-based styles. By focusing on the technique, dancers will be freed up in their expression and learn to marry the intention with the movement. July 20-24, 2015 > 9-4 pm July 24, 2015 > 7 pm Dance Showcase Ages: Section A (Ages 9-12) Section B (Ages 13-19) Tuition: $275 for pre-registration, $300 after May 15, 2015 Capacity: Each section is limited to 25 participants Vocal Performance Intensive Workshop You will learn how to integrate the vocal technique needed to produce great sound with the passion and creative interpretation that makes you want to sing your heart out. This collaborative learning experience will offer interpretation principles, vocal techniques and storytelling all brought together with a sense of musicality. You will build confidence in sharing your artistry through song. 6 FAQs How To Register Q: Is financial aid available? A: Scholarship applications are available upon request. Please contact Deadline for scholarship applications is April 8, Scholarship auditions/interviews are scheduled for April 18, Q: Can I drop a camp after registering? A: Payments are non-refundable. Q: Whom do I call for an emergency or if I need to contact my student during a class? A: Please call a representative of the Florida Hospital School of Arts & Wellness at Q: Where do I pick-up and drop-off my student? A: There will be a 5 minute pick-up and drop-off location at 155 E. Anderson Street and Magnolia Avenue available for your use. Please keep in mind that there is limited space on E. Anderson Street so 5 minutes is the maximum amount of time you can park or your vehicle may be towed. Q: Is parking available for students? A: There are several downtown parking options, however, the Dr. Phillips Center does not validate any parking. Visit drphillipscenter.org/parking for a list of locations. Q: Where are classes held in the building? A: Classes are held on Tier 2 of the administrative side of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. You will enter the Tupperware Brands Lobby at 155 E. Anderson Street, between Magnolia Avenue and Rosalind Avenue. Check in with security, then take the stairs or elevator to Tier 2. You must pay in full when registering. After May 15, 2015 a $25 late registration fee is added. If a camp or workshop does not reach a minimum number of students, it may be cancelled. In the event of a cancellation, your entire payment will be refunded and you will be notified two weeks prior to the start of class.
