1 Welcome to Silver Lake Intermediate School! Welcome to Silver Lake Intermediate School. We look forward to you joining us for the school year. Our wonderful building and great staff inspires our students to think, learn and succeed at Silver Lake. We trust that you and your child will find Silver Lake Intermediate School to be a warm, caring, and productive place of learning. As your SLI principal, I hope to perpetuate a tradition of positive and progressive educational services that are designed to meet the needs of your child. One of my strongest beliefs is that the feeling of community is extremely important in a school. The community includes, students, staff, and parents. I d like to think of Silver Lake Intermediate School as a caring community of learners. All of us are learning everyday. Schools are not places where the children are the only learners staff and parents learn just as much as the children. We always look forward to new directions for our school as well as new students and families! We will use our creativity, energy, continuous improvement efforts and forward thinking, with our central focus on delivering quality educational opportunities on a day-to-day basis at Silver Lake Intermediate School. There is much to be proud about at Silver Lake! The Intermediate Staff and I look forward to a dynamic school year. I am pleased to play a part at Silver Lake and I ll make a special effort at being visible and available through out the school year. Please remember that my door is always open and I welcome your questions and ideas regarding school programs and your child s involvement and growth. Communication between home and school is vital to your child s educational progress. Ellyn E. 4 Page 4 Silver Lake Cyclone Connection Do I need to register my child now? If your child is a 4th grade student at Summit Elementary or Park Lawn Elementary there is no need to register at this time. We take your child s information and roll it over to our system. If your child is not a student at Park Lawn or Summit and you would like to enroll and register your child at SL, please call as soon as possible. The Oconomowoc Area School District will be using Online Registration again this school year beginning early in July. Information about your child s schedule and/or teacher will be on your Family Access Account late August before school starts. MOVIN On to Silver Lake - AUGUST 14 (8:00-12:00) Here s an opportunity to get a head start on intermediate school life! You ll get orientated to Silver Lake and establish a connection with your 8th grade WEB leaders. You will practice communication skills, and learn positive behavior and study skills that will help with intermediate school learning. The orientation is full of fun activities, and it will give you a jump on feeling at home at Silver Lake. This is for students entering 5th grade! This is for students only. Parents should pick their child up by meeting them in the cafeteria or front door area at noon. You do not need to register for Movin On classes.

5 Page 5 Band/Choir/Orchestra/General Music Starting in 5th grade, students have the opportunity to be a part of band, choir, orchestra, or general music. Students will need to select one music option for 5th grade which includes General Music (Exploring song through listening and composition, playing percussion instruments such as African Drums and melodic instruments such as bells and keyboard) or Band, Choir, Orchestra, Band/Choir, or Choir/Orchestra. Our current band instructors and some band members have visited both PKL and Summit to introduce students to the band and orchestra instruments in February. Students (through Family Access) are selecting their music choices now. 5th grade students will have Band, Choir, or Orchestra every other day for a year or General Music for a trimester every other day. (During the school day!) Parents will register their child for their music choice through family access. Our Staff You will be pleased with the Silver Lake Staff and their professionalism, drive, love of kids, and positive work attitude. We have great teachers! Mrs. Helberg, Principal, has been in the Oconomowoc School District for 21 years. She has been a principal at Meadow View Elementary, Greenland Elementary, OMS Middle School, and Silver Lake Intermediate School. Mrs. Helberg is the proud mother of two sons who are Oconomowoc High School graduates and business owners in Stone Bank/Oconomowoc. Mrs. Helberg lives with her husband in Oconomowoc. Mr. Werchowski, Associate Principal, has been in the Oconomowoc School District for 12 years. He has been the Associate Principal at SLI for three years and was an OHS Psychology teacher for 9 years and the Varsity Boy s Soccer Coach. He is the proud father of Lucy (7), Olive (5) Finley (3), and Jude (9 months) and married to Krista, who is a teacher at Oconomowoc High School. The commitment and positive attitude of our staff will make a great year! ******************************************************************************** Just in The 2015 Niche Public Middle School Rankings (check out for more information)! 6 Page 6 Newsletter Title What is WEB at Silver Lake School? The transition to intermediate school can be a major event in the life of a young person and yet very few strategies for support exist in most intermediate or middle schools. WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) eases this challenging time period by offering our 5th graders a solid and safe foundation to begin their intermediate school experience. With WEB, students help students succeed by using older students as peer mentors for the 5th graders. WEB Leaders are members of the 8th grade class who go through an extensive training to become positive role models, motivators and teachers. The WEB Leaders also serve as a catalyst for change at our school by modeling positive behavior for their peers, thus reducing incidences of bullying and helping to make Silver Lake School a place where EVERYONE BELONGS. WEB has been great at our school! It has provided a great transition for upcoming 5th graders and has reduced anxiety in students and parents. Our 8th graders have served as great role models to the 5th graders. Our WEB program is continuing to get stronger and continuing to make a positive influence on everyone that participates in it, states Mrs. Helberg, our principal. WEB is a year long orientation and transition program that helps our school. Academic follow-ups by WEB leaders occur all year. They provide structured lessons on topics such as Study Skills, Asking Good Questions, and Lifting People Up Instead of Putting Them Down. Social follow-ups provide a social setting for WEB leaders and their 5th graders to reconnect and build relationships outside the classroom. Several times throughout the year 5th graders attend organized social events that may include playing games together, watching a movie together, or eating lunch together. WEB will be providing our 5th grade students with the Movin On Program this summer right before school
