Youth Mentor Duty Statement POSITION TITLE: STATUS: REPORTS TO: Youth Mentor Full Time Program Manager The youth mentoring program offers young people a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with a mentor either in a group or on an individual basis. The mentoring role is an essential to building resiliency in the lives of young people to mitigate risk of poor life outcomes. The mentor will offer structured guidance, support and encouragement towards the young person achieving positive outcomes in a variety of responsive ways. It will be important when mentoring young people that necessary links are made to other agencies and support systems in order that the young person is accessing all necessary supports to achieve his or her goals. The mentoring relationship can take place in schools, community facilities, and other sites conducive to the young person building resiliency and increasing protective factors. 1. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 1.1. Provide an outreach, individual and group mentoring youth and referral service for clients and their families in accordance with Program requirements and agency policies. 1.2. Be able to respond appropriately to youth requiring links to other services. 1.3. Facilitate education information and mentoring groups as required. 1.4. Arrange internal referrals and referrals to other agencies and services for clients who would be better served by such agencies and services. 1.5. Agree to abide by relevant professional ethics and agency policies. 1.6. Perform special duties as requested by the Manager, e.g. assist with community development and liaison, represent agency on public committees, give presentations to community groups etc 1.7. A willingness to travel within the Goldfields Region. 1.8. Link youth with programs that will enhance their self-confidence and self-worth, such as sporting activities, the arts and cultural activities that enhance a greater sense of identity and self-awareness. 1.9. Spend regular one to one time with those young people who have been assessed as benefitting from one to one mentoring program with the aim of increasing protective factors for the young person. 1.10. Engage young people in group activities whereby they are learning from their peers and increasing social skills. 1.11. Engage young people in voluntary community service activities where they are given opportunities to act as community resources rather than recipients. 1.12. Ensure that all case-notes are maintained within the Centrecare database system and in accordance with policies and procedures around case noting. Engage with the families and significant others of the young person involving them in the mentoring activities and care plans where possible and beneficial for the young person. Page 3 of 8

2. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 2.1. Receive regular management and clinical supervision and consultation. 2.2. Participate in staff development and training programs offered within the agency. 2.3. Attend relevant training programs provided by external professionals and agencies. 2.4. Maintain professional reading and knowledge. 3. ADMINISTRATION 3.1. Develop and maintain statistical records of intervention, consultative, educational and other services provided, in accordance with Centrecare program and agency requirements. 3.2. Maintain personal client statistics. 3.3. Maintain up to date community resource information. 3.4. Prepare reports as required in conjunction with the Manager. 3.5. Attend agency staff meetings, team meetings and other meetings as required. 3.6. Participate in agency planning and administration as agreed with the Manager. 3.7. Be available, where appropriate for working parties and other ad hoc committees. 3.8. Other duties as directed by the Manager 4. GENERIC RESPONSIBILITIES 4.1. Name Youth Mentor Selection Criteria MINIMUM CRITERIA 1. Recognised qualifications in Community Development, Social Work, Social Sciences, Youth Work and related disciplines or equivalent. 2. Relevant experience in the area of general counselling, family support and/or youth counselling. 3. Experience in Outreach work eg community settings, home settings, detention centres and at other agency locations. 4. Well developed communication skills, written and verbal. 5. Demonstrated ability to work across cultures. 6. Ability to work within a team. 7. Possession of a current C (previously A ) class driver s license and vehicle. 8. Able to work flexible hours Monday to Friday as negotiated up to 8.30 pm Monday to Friday. 9. Ability to work within the Centrecare Ethos. Page 6 of 8
