2013 Diabetes Nursing Conference Focus on Self-Care Behaviors April 12, 2013 Mayo Clinic Mayo Continuing Nursing Education

General Information Conference description and goals The incidence of diabetes is increasing at concerning rates with an estimated one in three Americans anticipated to have Type 2 diabetes by 2050 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Diabetes self-management education, with a focus on behavior change, has been found to be effective for persons with diabetes. Nurses and other healthcare providers who are up-to-date with diabetes management and education have opportunities throughout the healthcare continuum to help persons with diabetes. Areas for self-management and behavior change are summarized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators AADE7 Self Care Behaviors : Healthy Eating, Being Active, Monitoring, Taking Medications, Problem Solving, Healthy Coping, and Reducing Risks. Each of these areas will be addressed during the conference. Breakout sessions will allow attendees to individualize their learning opportunities based on their areas of interest and current knowledge level. The goals of the conference are to: Emphasize the importance of diabetes self-management. Identify ways for patients to apply the AADE7 to their life styles. Increase exposure to technology and advances in the field of diabetes. Increase awareness of the challenges and opportunities experienced by people living with diabetes. Date and location The conference will be held Friday, April 12, 2013, in Phillips Hall, first floor, Siebens Building, Mayo Clinic, 100 Second Avenue SW,. Intended audience This conference is designed for certified diabetes educators, nurses in all specialties, and all other healthcare professionals interested in the care of patients with diabetes. Exhibits Nationally known companies will display the latest in medical products, pharmaceuticals, and services. You will have opportunities to visit the exhibits, interact with representatives, enjoy refreshments, and network with colleagues. Register before March 22, 2013 The conference registration fee of $150 includes instructional materials, breakfast, and break refreshments. Lunch will be on your own. A student rate of $85 is available. Please bring proof of current student status to the conference (for example, a copy of your student identification card). General Information Continuing education credit Mayo Continuing Nursing Education is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Participants can earn up to 6.5 nursing contact hours (accredited) for the conference. These hours apply toward recertification for certified diabetes educators (CDE). ***One hour applies toward advanced practice nursing pharmacotherapeutic continuing education. Mayo Clinic Section of Social Work has been designated by the Minnesota Board of Social Work as an approved continuing education provider. This conference fulfills requirements for 6.5 continuing education hours. An application will be submitted for certified diabetes educator (CDE) continuing education hours. Cancellations If you cancel your participation in this conference, your registration fee, less an administrative fee, will be refunded when notification is received by Mayo Continuing Nursing Education before March 22, 2013 (fax#: 507-266-6910 or e-mail: cne@mayo.edu). No refunds will be made on or after March 22, 2013. Mayo Continuing Nursing Education reserves the right to cancel or postpone any conference due to unforeseen circumstances.
