1 2015 Annual School Nurse Conference October 8-9, 2015 Sheraton Hotel th St. West Des Moines, Iowa
2 2015 Annual School Nurse Conference October 8-9, 2015 Sheraton Hotel th St. West Des Moines, Iowa Statement of Purpose The University of Iowa College of Nursing is pleased to announce that James Conway of the Search Institute of Minneapolis has accepted our invitation to provide a halfday workshop for this year s annual School Nurse Conference. The Search Institute specializes in exploring the impact that positive relationships can have in shaping the behavioral outcomes of children and youth. In this interactive workshop, Mr. Conway will identify specific actions you and your colleagues can take to develop relationships with the children and youth you serve. The ultimate goal is to empower our school-aged children for educational success and social-emotional development. Don t miss this opportunity for acquiring specific skills you can use in your school setting! In addition, the conference will provide an array of both clinical and practice-appropriate topics, including pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome, sex trafficking, the CDC guidelines for healthy eating and physical activity, common cardiac rhythm issues in childhood, brain injury, the evaluation of fevers in the school setting, medication administration, and continuous glucose monitoring.
3 Objectives Upon completion of this offering, the participant will be able to: 1. Describe the critical impact of positive relationships in shaping behavioral outcomes of children and youth. 2. Identify specific actions that make a relationship developmental. 3. Reflect on the role of the school nurse within the context of developmental relationships. 4. Discuss the management of Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome in the school setting. 5. Describe the short- and long-term physical and mental healthcare consequences for victims of sex trafficking. 6. Review current CDC school health guidelines for promoting healthy eating and physical activity. 7. Discuss guidelines for the assessment and management of fevers in the school-aged child. 8. Define and identify common cardiac dysrhythmias in children. 9. Identify different treatment options for common cardiac dysrhythmias in children. 10. Discuss key considerations for students returning to school after a traumatic brain injury. 11. Discuss a multi-disciplinary case study of a student with brain injury returning to the school setting. 12. Discuss the results of a national medication administration survey describing medications being given in the school setting, who is giving the medications, and precautions to ensure safety of children. 13. Discuss the assessment and management of fevers in the school-aged child.
