2013 Event Poster

About the CFWH Established in 1981, the Canadian Foundation for Women s Health is Canada s leading charity committed to the advancement of sexual and reproductive health of women in Canada and around the world through groundbreaking research, comprehensive education and leading advocacy in obstetrics and gynaecology. With the support of individuals, medical organizations and companies, the CFWH funds research in women s health that is improving the health of women at every stage of their lives. The Foundation is a champion for increased funding for research on women s sexual and reproductive health and strives to foster support for domestic and international women s health programs. CFWH believes that every woman should have equitable access to optimal comprehensive health care, provided with integrity and compassion in Canada and around the world. CAUSE Pregnancy is a wonderful and positive experience, but most people don t think of the challenges that come with it. CFWH Bumps on the Road -A 9K Walk for Pregnancy is the first time that everyone can come together and raise awareness and funds for research that addresses diseases or illness in pregnancy. Research topics that the CFWH supports can range from gestational diabetes, to high blood pressure and obesity in pregnancy. This walk is fun and visual: people walk wearing fake bellies or weighted backpacks to really put themselves in the shoes of pregnant women. If a pregnant woman can lug around more than 20 pounds for a few months, I think we can all do it for 9K! PURPOSE The event is meant to bring together local communities to support women s sexual and reproductive health. Our objective for this initiative is to build volunteer groups or partner with like-minded organizations that will co-host a CFWH Bumps on the Road- A 9K Walk for Pregnancy in communities across Canada, for years to come. Our goal is to make this a national event and for the CFWH to gain increased visibility amongst Canadian women and their families. All proceeds raised by the CFWH will go towards the Canadian Foundation for Women s Health Research Award, Fellowships and Grants Program. THEME Because 9K represents 9 months of carrying a baby, we encourage all participants, women and men, to wear their bellies with pride: real or fake! Participants are encouraged to wear a weighted backpack or a fake belly (also called Sympathy Bellies) to see what it feels like to carry extra weight while being pregnant. We encourage creativity, like adding weights at every 3K, representing a trimester and getting heavier as the walk goes on or simply dressing up like a pregnant woman. New 2013 Partnership with Life with a Baby

The Life with a Baby peer support system is a project of Healthy Start, Healthy Future, a charitable organization whose goal is to provide ongoing practical and emotional PEER-based support for new and expecting parents, and parents of children up to the age of six. We offer informational seminars and programs, open forums, and fun social events. Our purpose is to give news parents tools and resources to feel more confident with the awesome responsibility of taking care of a small child and equip them with life saving skills. Raising a baby is a wonderful experience, but it is can also be a challenge... Through an evaluation, it's been proven that our peer support programs help reduce the isolation and anxiety that most new moms face, and in turn, minimize the likelihood of moms feeling alone and developing PPMD symptoms. Our programs and services: Social & Networking Events In addition to over 35 monthly face to face social events, our website offers continuous mom to mom support. Our social events offer an opportunity for new and stay at home moms at the same stage of life to connect with each other. These include social gatherings, weekly walk groups, moms only events, and various support groups. Parenting Programs Parenting Confidently For parents and caregivers of Infants 0-12mths Purpose: To give new parents and caregivers tools and resources to feel more confident taking care of a small child and equip them with life saving skills. Managing Expectations For Moms with children 0-24mths Purpose: To normalize the challenges parents face and manage expectations of what lifew with a baby is like. Parenting Toddlers & Pre-schoolers (For parents with children 18mth to 4.5yrs) Purpose: to assist parents with toddlers in making positive parenting decisions that will have a positive impact on their child during the this very important stage in child development Building Strong Families Purpose: to help couples manage their expectations and adjust to the new dynamics in their relationships
