(2-0) COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to broaden the student s understanding of the care of the well and sick child. Emphasis is placed on the family-centered approach to the nursing care of children with medical and surgical conditions most often affecting children. The student is exposed to the preventive, rehabilitative, and terminal care of the child and his family while caring for children with acute, chronic, and congenital conditions. PREREQUISITES: Prerequisites: PNE 101, 102, 103, 161 COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Identify common pediatric health problems including causes, symptoms, treatments, nursing care, and prevention. 2. Identify deviations from normal development in both well and ill children. 3. Identify safe, effective nursing care to children with medical/surgical conditions including: provision for daily needs according to developmental age; accurate recording of pertinent data; and administration of medications and treatments. 4. Explain common diagnostic tests including: normal pediatric ranges; purposes for tests; and procedures involved. 5. Be aware of necessity of teaching children and parents at various levels of understanding including: explanation of child s illness/injury and treatment; education relevant to child s hygiene, nutrition, safety, and behavior; and utilization of appropriate resources and agencies. 6. Be aware of how to handle child health and/or behavioral problems with a minimum of emotional stress for the child, the family, and the nurse. 7. A pretest will be given; if passed with a 100%, module is complete. If not passed, then student will complete appropriately assigned programs in Career Assistance Lab prior to retaking exam. Student may take math module exam a total of three times. Each exam will be different. A. Accurately read medication labels.

Parenteral Solution a. 3 cc syringe b. TB syringe c. 5, 6, 10, 12 and 20 cc syringe C. Dosage calculations 1. Equivalents 2. Based on body weight (1 lb kg) (mg per Kg) a. Ratio b. Fractions c. Mathematical functions (+, -,, x) COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Four pop quizzes will be given. Each pop quiz will be worth 5 points and will cover the previous week s lecture and/or medication equivalents. No makeups for pop quizzes. If student not present when quiz begins, student will not be allowed to take pop quiz, and will receive a 0 grade. 2. A total of two article/video reports are to be done. A one page review of each article/video must be completed and handed in by the specified due date. Review sheets not handed in by due date will not be accepted and a zero grade will be assigned. The article must directly relate to pediatrics and must be from RN, AJN, or Nursing; other appropriate journals are professional nursing journals. All articles must be no more than 3 years old, unless approved by the instructor. The verification slip from the Learning Lab must be completed with time in and time out recorded for the video report to be considered as complete. Plagiarized works will receive a 0 for all involved. A total of five major unit exams will be given. Makeup exams will be given in the Learning Lab within a 7-day time frame. If a student does not notify the instructor the day of the absence, exam grade will be reduced by 5 points. Exams not made up within 7 days of scheduled exam will receive a 10% grade reduction. Students tardy on unit exam day will be allowed to take the exam, but will be required to complete the exam within the allotted time announced.

5 5 No comprehensive final will be given. Each exam will include pharmacology calculations. Student may use calculator; no sharing of calculators allowed. 4. Attendance in theory is essential. It is the student s responsibility to remain informed about class assignments, information, or announcements. A minimum of C must be maintained in this class. Less than a C results in a failing grade for the course. 5. No cell phones or pagers on during class. Students are expected to be aware of and have a copy of John A. Logan College s Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook. 6. Student Success Center. Tutors may be obtained through the Student Success Center. Contact the staff in C219 if this service is desired. John A. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. 8. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office.
