1 WEATHERFORD COLLEGE MASTER SYLLABUS Program: Diagnostic Medical Sonography-Echocardiography Certificate (CIP ) Course Title: Echocardiographic Evaluation of Pathology I Course No.: DSAE 2404 Course Description: Adult acquired cardiac pathologies. Topics include cardiovascular pathophysiology, quantitative measurements, and the application of 2-D, M-Mode, and Doppler. Recognition of the sonographic appearances of cardiovascular disease is stressed. (4-3-2) End-of-Course Outcomes: Describe the etiology, signs and symptoms, treatment, and echocardiographic features of common valvular and myocardial diseases; discuss the criteria for recognition, evaluation, and quantification of these diseases; and identify pathophysiology and hemodynamic consequences. Prerequisites: DSAE 1303, DSAE 1440, DSAE 2303, DSAE 2360 Co requisites: DSAE 2335, DSAE 2461 Instructional Materials Textbooks: Textbook of Clinical Echocardiography. 4 th edition. Catherine Otto. Saunders Elsevier. ISBN: Feigenbaum s Echocardiography. 7 th edition. William F. Armstrong and Thomas Ryan. Lippincott Williams and Wilkins. ISBN: Echocardiographer s Pocket Reference. 3 rd edition. ISBN Audio/Visuals: Laboratory practice equipment SCANS Competencies The Secretary s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) identified Competencies in the area of Resources, Interpersonal, Information, Systems, and Technology; and foundation skills in the areas of Basic Skills, Thinking Skills, and Personal Qualities. This course is part of a program in which each of these Competencies and skills are integrated. The specific SCANS Competencies that are recognized throughout this course are noted at the end of the appropriate Competencies or task listed.
2 Goals Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes: Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the student will be able to: I. Identify etiology and pathophysiology of valvular diseases. (F1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9,10,11,12,15,C1,11,12,13,14,15,19,20) A. Describe and identify valvular disease and infection. B. Describe and identify congenital heart disease in adults and children. C. Describe and identify prosthetic valves. D. Describe and utilize the echocardiographic tools used to evaluate valvular disease. II. Identify etiology and pathophysiology of myocardial diseases. (F1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,C1,3,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20) A. Identify and describe signs and symptoms of ventricular disfunction. B. Identify and describe etiology and pathophysiology of Myocardial infarction and Myocardial Ischemia. C. Identify and describe complete evaluation methods for Tamponade, CHF and other myocardial diseases.
3 Evaluation Method Exercises/Assignments/Quizzes 40% Mid-Term Exam 30% Final Exam 30% Grading Standards: A % B 80-89% C 75-79% F <75% Please refer to the Sonography Student Handbook for Academic Policies and additional information. Attendance: Your attendance is the biggest predictor of your success. Attendance at every class is expected. The student will be allowed to miss 2 class days (exception test days) without it adversely affecting their grade and 2 lab days (exception check-off days) without it adversely affecting their grade. Every one absence over the allotted days will result in the student s final grade being reduced by one letter grade. If the student is more than 15 minutes late to lecture or lab, this will constitute an absence. 3 tardies count as 1 day absent. You are required to call the instructor prior to any absence. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence. An exam missed because of an excused absence must be made up the day that the student returns to class. An exam missed because of an unexcused absence may not be made up, and the student will receive a grade of zero (0) for that exam. There will be no makeups for quizzes. If you are absent for quiz, you will receive a zero (0). There will be a 10% deduction in grade for any late homework or assignments. All students must achieve a minimum of 75% or higher to pass this course Cell phones will be stored on silent in the student mailbox during class. Cell phones may be accessed during breaks. A student shall retain all rights to work created as part of instruction or using College District technology resources.
4 Allied Health/Nursing Academic Integrity Policy Academic Integrity is fundamental to the educational mission of Weatherford College and the College expects its students to maintain high standards of personal and scholarly conduct. Academic dishonesty of any kind will not be tolerated. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on an examination or other academic work, plagiarism, collusion, and the abuse of resource materials. Any student who is demonstrated to have engaged in any of these activities will be subject to immediate disciplinary action in the following manner: First Offense: The student will be subject to immediate removal from the respective program. A full record of all demonstrable violations of this policy will be retained in the student's disciplinary file for the length of his or her tenure at Weatherford College. The student retains the right to appeal any disciplinary action to the Student Appeals Committee. The instructor will notify the student of the report of academic dishonesty. The Dean of Student Development will notify the student of the disciplinary action.
