COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course builds upon previous instruction and provides additional opportunities to develop competencies necessary to meet the needs of individuals throughout the lifespan in a safe, legal, and ethical manner using the nursing process. Students manage and provide collaborative care to clients who are experiencing selected alterations in cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological systems in a variety of settings. Additional instruction is provided care for selected mental health disorders, selected emergencies, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and related disorders. Teaching/learning concepts, advanced dosage calculations, nutrition, pharmacology, communication, cultural, and community concepts are integrated. The Alabama Community College System 1

GENERAL EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Nursing 203 course objectives support the college s general education objective #9 that upon successful completion of their chosen program of study all associates in applied degree graduates should be able to Apply the knowledge and demonstrate the skills needed for appropriate entry into the occupations for which they are trained. VI. COMPTENCIES / OBJECTIVES Utilize the nursing process to provide advance nursing care for clients throughout the lifespan VII. TEACHING STRATEGIES Lecture: A. Selected Cardiovascular Alterations B. Respiratory Alterations C. Neurological Alterations D. Sepsis, Septic Shock, Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) E. Selected Emergencies F. Burns G. Selected Mental Health Disorders Lecture: Guided Discussion, Audiovisual Material, Role Playing, Simulations METI, Tegrity lecture capture system Clinical: Assigned client care experiences, Pre/Post Clinical Conferences, Student/ Faculty Conferences, Drug Cards, Complete and correct Nursing Care Plan, Clinical Assignment VIII. EVALUATION The final course grade is the theory grade, provided the student receives a satisfactory evaluation in the clinical laboratory. A. Course Grade: Theory: Grade is a composite of the following: = 60% of grade Scheduled tests (7 Modules) Exam Comprehensive Final Exam Program Evaluation Examination = 20% of grade = 20% of grade Clinical Laboratory: The clinical laboratory evaluation is "Satisfactory" or "Unsatisfactory." To receive a Satisfactory," clinical evaluation the student on the final evaluation: (1) must receive a "Satisfactory" evaluation on each Critical Behavior; (2) may not receive an Unsatisfactory evaluation on any Professional Behavior; (3) may receive a Needs Improvement or Not Observed evaluation on a Professional Behavior, and (4) must receive a Satisfactory evaluation on both activities (1&2) listed below. 3 VIII. EVALUATION (Cont d) Specific criteria to evaluate student performance are written on each tool. An overall "Unsatisfactory" evaluation on the NUR 203 Clinical Evaluation Tool will result in a grade of F for the course and the student cannot progress, regardless of the theory grade. 1. Clinical Performance Evaluation Tool: critical behaviors and professional behaviors may be evaluated at any time but not less than once at the end of the clinical experience. Students must receive a "satisfactory" evaluation on each critical behavior. 2. Care Plan: One nursing care plan based on nursing assessment, health history and drug cards of an assigned client must be completed satisfactorily. B. Evaluation of General Educational Objectives: General Educational Objective #9: All nursing graduates should be able to Apply the knowledge and demonstrate the skills needed for appropriate entry into the occupations for which they are trained. This objective is evaluated by S or U on the Performance Evaluation Tool and a Pretest/Posttest. C. Use of Findings: At the completion of this course, faculty will review and evaluate the course. Attendance Policy: Class attendance is considered to be essential to accomplish the course objectives, excessive absences are discouraged. At no time should a student miss more than 20% of the class meetings for a course. Failure to adhere to the 20% policy may result in a failing grade. These absences also include any absences accrued during late registration. Students should discuss with the instructor what is considered excessive for the course. Any variation of this policy must be approved through the Chief Instructional Officer. C. Withdrawal Policy: The student should withdraw from the class before poor attendance interferes with the student s ability to achieve the objectives required in the course. Withdrawal from class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid and prohibit progression in the nursing programs. Please refer to the NWSCC catalog for additional details. 5 XIII. POLICIES (Cont d) D. Academic Honesty: The college policy on academic honesty will be strictly enforced. (See policy in the college catalog under student handbook). The usual consequence of academic dishonesty is failure of the course and referral of the case to the Department Chairperson and the Dean of the College for additional disciplinary action. Examinations are individual and are to be completed without outside assistance of any sort. Persons observed cheating will receive a failing grade (F) in the course. E. Sexual Harassment/Discrimination: The College and the Alabama Board of Education are committed to providing both employment and educational environments free of harassment or discrimination related to an individual s race, color, gender, religion, national origin, age, or disability. Such harassment is a violation of State Board of Education policy. Any practice or behavior that constitutes harassment or discrimination will not be tolerated. (See the Sexual Harassment Policy found in the college catalog, student handbook area.) F. Missed Test/Make-up: The instructor must be notified in advance when a student will be missing a test. If a student must be absent on a scheduled test day, a make-up examination will be given prior to final exams. The essay format may be utilized for make-up tests. XIV.
