The student is expected to demonstrate increasing mastery of skills and concepts necessary to function as an effective practical nurse. Meets PN curriculum requirements only. Saunders Co., 5 th Edition Clark, Community Health Nursing 4 th Prentice hall, 2003 METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: EVALUATION: EVALUATION METHOD: Nursing 183 uses audio-visual materials with lecture or discussion, selected readings, case study, written assignments and demonstration. Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate achievement of the course objectives by obtaining a final minimum grade of seventy-eight (78%), as measured by teacher made examinations. All assignments are mandatory. All assignments must be completed to successfully pass the course. See Student Handbook for specific information regarding tests, etc. Research project 10% Examinations (5) 65% Final Examination (1) 25% Total 100% GRADE SCALE: Per School of Nursing Student Handbook guidelines. A Excellent % A % B % B Good 87-89% B % C % C Average 78-80% F Failing performance Below 78% PROGRESSION Progression in the nursing program without interruption is POLICY: determined academically by achieving a minimal grade of "C" (78%). ATTENDANCE POLICY: TESTING POLICY: Attendance is mandatory. See the School of Nursing Student Handbook for specific guidelines. Students are expected to take all examinations as they are scheduled. Make-up policy with regard to examinations is described in the School of Nursing Student Handbook.
4 OTHER COURSE EXPECTATIONS: The student is expected to have read the material to be covered in class PRIOR to class. Examinations will cover material from lecture, discussion, case studies, and selected readings. Therefore, the student is expected to study these sources of material thoroughly. Research Project: One community health project will be required. See directive. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Provides direct care, based on the nursing process, for Clients with common well-defined nursing diagnoses, within a structured health care setting, under the supervision of an experienced registered nurse, doctor, or dentist. 2. Utilizes basic therapeutic communication skills when interacting with clients, families and other health care team members along the continuum of care. 3. Implements and modifies standard teaching plans for clients under the supervision of a registered nurse. 4. Organizes basic aspects of care for clients with common health needs within structured health care settings. 5. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability to the profession of nursing as well as utilizing nursing research findings.
5 Adult Nursing 183 Project Guidelines Choose one of the following topics: Child Abuse in the US Elder Abuse in the US Substance Abuse in the US Homeless People in the US Domestic Violence in the US Adolescent Pregnancy in the US Migrant Population in the US Write a 4-6 page research paper examining the topic and its impact on community health in the US. The paper should be typewritten, double spaced with one inch margins on all edges. A minimum of 4 references are to be used and a bibliography included with the paper. References should be professional journals or textbooks which are not more than 5 years old. Use APA format. 6/18 Submit notes on references 6/25 Submit outline for paper 7/9 Papers due & Presentations On 7/9 group or individual presentations of the chosen topic will be given to the class lasting minutes each. The project is 10% of the course grade. The written paper will be graded by the instructor (5%). Oral presentations will be graded by the class & instructor using a point system (5%). The two grades will be averaged for the final project grade. The project is mandatory to pass the course. Library time is also mandatory to complete the course.

II XII Culture 1. Define the terms: race, ethnicity, cultural competence, stereotype, cultural blindness, cultural shock, cultural conflict, cultural imposition. 2. Describe the impact of culture on community health. 3. Explain the most significant beliefs and behaviors related to prevalent cultural groups in the U.S. Families 1. List types of families. 2. Recognize variations in family dynamics and patters. 3. Identify pertinent points of family assessment. 4. Discuss family crisis interventions for community. XIII Children 1. Discuss health problems of children. 2. List the developmental milestones of infants through adolescence. 3. Discuss the impact of teen pregnancy and suicide on community health. 4. Explain the pediatric immunization schedule. 5. Discuss the scope and significance of child abuse 6. Identify resources available to deal with child abuse. XIV Adults 1. Identify causes and resources for treatment of substance abuse. 2. Identify causes and resources available to assist victims of domestic violence. 3. Discuss the primary health problems of adults in the community. XV Older Adults 1. Describe normal physical changes associated with the aging process. 2. Describe psychosocial responses of the elder adult population. 3. Identify coping mechanisms for the elderly. 4. Identify resources in the community that are available to older adults. 5. Describe the nurse s role in assisting with end of life decisions. 6. Differentiate between elder abuse and neglect.
7 7. Identify assessment finding interventions for elder abuse and neglect. VIII Communicable Disease 1. Discuss trends in communicable disease incidence. 2. Define chain of infection and explain its parts. 3. Discuss contributing factors to communicable disease. 4. Explain primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention measure for communicable diseases. X Chronic Phyiscal Health Problems in the Community 1. Describe the effects of chronic health problems. 2. Discuss factors influencing chronic physical health problems. 3. List the major chronic physical health problems in the U.S. 4. Disucuss preventative measures for chronic physical health problems. 5. Explain care giver role strain. IX Homeless Population 1. Describe factors that contribute to homelessness. 2. Identify biophysical, psychological, physical environmental, sociocultural, behavioral, and health system factors that influence the health of homeless clients. 3. Describe approaches to primary prevention of homelessness. 4. Identify major areas of emphasis in primary prevention of health problems in homeless clients. I Home Care 1. Describe personal safety considerations for home visits. 2. Discuss purposes of home visits. 3. List types of home health agencies. XI Mental Health Problems in the Community 1. Discuss the effects of mental health problems: personal, family, societal. 2. Describe factors influencing mental health problems. 3. List the major mental health disorders. 4. 8 UNIT OBJECTIVES II. Medical-Surgical Topics At the completion of the course, the learner will meet the following objectives: 1. Participates in collecting a nursing history based on subjective and objective data. 2. Identifies basic health care needs according to nursing assessment. 3. Assists in selecting nursing diagnoses from an established list based on identified health care needs for the individual client. 4. Assists in prioritizing nursing diagnoses for the individual client. 5. Assists with identifying goals for the individual client according to the selected nursing diagnoses. 6. Assists with identifying outcome criteria specific to each goal. 7. Identifies nursing interventions for an individual client s plan of care. 8. Utilized knowledge from nursing and liberal arts and science courses when contributing to an individual plan of care. 9. Verbalizes understanding of the medical plan of care based on scientific knowledge to promote and integrated plan of care. 10. Recognizes client s response to plan of care based on established nursing interventions and outcome criteria. NURSING 183 NURSING CARE OF ADULTS II THEORY COURSE OUTLINE (Medical/surgical)
9 Nursing diagnoses, goals, plans of care, and interventions will be provided per unit. The specific information will be given relating to each person. The nursing plan of care will stress the concept of adaptation. The nursing plan of care and medical plan of care have been separated to emphasize the difference between the two concepts.
