1 JOHN A. LOGAN COLLEGE N. Arnett SM 14 MUS 111 A-Z MUS 213 A-Z APPLIED MUSIC 1-2 cr. (0-2, 0-4) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Private lessons on any classical instrument are available through John A. Logan College. Lessons are given on campus whenever possible or by qualified instructors in a private studio. Lessons incorporate representative solo and study materials and a basic knowledge of appropriate literature. Students will develop basic knowledge through advanced performance skills. A student may take up to six semesters of the same instrument for college credit. Music majors are required to take applied lessons every semester of enrollment. Students should consult with the Applied Lessons Coordinator to begin lessons. PREREQUISITES: Must be taken in sequence COURSE GOALS: To give a student private instruction on his chosen instrument, and to take the student from his particular knowledge point and move him forward as a performer on his instrument. COURSE OBJECTIVES: The student will: 1. demonstrate the ability to read and perform a pitch and with correct rhythms. 2. demonstrate techniques appropriate to his/her instrument (i.e., breathing, posture, hand position, fingering, etc.). 3. demonstrate the ability to read and perform music from several style periods according to his/her ability level. 4. memorize all music to be performed. 5. submit a paper on how music or how performing on his/her particular instrument has influenced his/her life. COURSE OUTLINE: Course is outlined by each individual instructor to fit the needs of the student being taught.

Guitar In example, a course listed on a transcript as 113-B would indicate it is the third semester of piano. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Students must practice outside of class on each concept, project, assignment, or piece assigned in class. Assigned projects must be completed to the satisfaction of the instructor before the student will receive a grade for the course. Fourteen thirty-minute lessons (or the equivalent thereof) for one hour of academic credit or fourteen one-hour lessons (or the equivalent thereof) for two hours of academic credit are required per semester to receive a final grade for the course. Student may be asked to perform on a Master Class and/or Recital. Students pursuing the AFA degree or those wishing to attain a baccalaureate degree in music are required to take Applied Lessons, four semesters, for one hour a week receiving two credit hours per semester. These lessons are separate from the keyboarding requirements. Student Financial Obligations. The majority of the John A. Logan College Applied Lessons Instructors maintain private studios within the College district. In the case that an instructor charges more than the College for private lessons, it will be the obligation of the student to pay the difference in instructional dues as required by the instructor. This is in alignment with the instructor contract item seven: If the amount you are contracted to receive is less than the fee you charge for private instruction, it will be up to you to collect the difference from the students. ---dated May 20, 2004

3 3 Course Materials 1. Students will be asked to purchase literature appropriate for his/her instrument. 2. It is advisable to bring a folder, notebook, pencil, and staff paper to Applied Lessons. AFA Keyboard Requirements Keyboard skills include sequential development of functional knowledge of the keyboard and playing skills sufficient to handle practical situations, including harmonization, transposition, sight-reading, improvisation, accompanying, ensemble playing, and keyboard literature appropriate to the level of the course. Keyboarding requirements consist of keyboard instruction, four semesters for one credit each. The AFA student should take MUS 106 Beginning Class Piano in conjunction with MUS 108 Aural Skills I as well as with MUS 121 Theory of Music. Each semester of enrollment (typically four), the AFA student will take in sequence courses in: Piano Instruction, Aural Skills, Theory, and Applied Lessons. Use the following chart as a guide in selecting the appropriate classes in each semester of enrollment as an AFA candidate. Music Theory MUS 211 (A-Z) Music majors, minors, AFA students, and those pursuing applied instruction on any instrument should consult with the Applied Lessons Coordinator well in advance of instruction. Applied Lessons Jury Examinations (Music Majors ONLY) Each semester, all music majors enrolled in applied music are required to perform a jury examination on their major instrument. The purpose of the examination is to determine the student s progress and achievement during the semester. A portion of the student s final grade may be determined by the jury examination.

4 4 Jury examinations are scheduled during the week of final examinations in 8 minute intervals. Students and their accompanists should arrive 30 minutes prior to their scheduled jury performance time. Applied Lessons Instructors and appropriate colleagues will constitute the hearing committee. The student s applied teacher will be present. Students must be prepared to perform any material specified during the current semester as indicated on the repertoire sheet. The applied student will supply the hearing committee with 5 copies (front/back) of the jury forms. Students are responsible for providing an accompanist, if appropriate. Jury examination guidelines will be discussed and made available with individual Applied Lessons Instructors. There is no jury required for applied lessons in the summer. Attendance. The John A. Logan College attendance policy will be enforced. Students are expected to attend all scheduled class periods; attendance is necessary for successful completion. Applied Lessons Attendance Policy 1. It is the responsibility of the student to contact his/her Applied Lessons Instructor if he/she is unavailable to attend a regularly scheduled lesson (or make-up lesson). 2. A twenty-four hour notice must be provided by the student in order for a lesson to be made-up. If an emergency arises (past the twenty-four hour notice or thereafter) notify the instructor. Students may always leave a message with the Applied Lessons Coordinator, Nathan Arnett at Ext It is the decision of the Applied Lessons Instructor to make-up a lesson. 4. If the student misses a lesson without notifying his/her instructor (within twentyfour hours) the lesson will not be made-up. 5. Applied Lessons Instructors will make-up any lesson that has been cancelled because of the unavailability of the instructor or for any school sanctioned event. Student Success Center (Room C219). Services available for students include tutoring (both scheduled one-on-one tutoring and walk-in tutoring) and Disability Support Services. Students can drop in during the hours of operation for tutoring in the Math Help Room (C219 and C223) or the Biology Help Room (C243A). To receive one-onone tutoring, students should make a request early in the semester in the Student Success Center. The Student Success Center is also the place to arrange accommodations. John A. Logan College will make reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Contact the coordinator of Disability Support Services, Room C219B, ext. 8516, for more information. The coordinator must determine eligibility and arrange appropriate academic accommodations. However, it is the student s responsibility to register in advance of a school term with Disability Support Services and to turn in a class schedule each term to ensure accommodations are arranged. 5 5 English Writing Center/Tutoring. For assistance with writing assignments in any college courses, students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center in C214. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. Administrative Withdrawal. A student may be withdrawn from a class for lack of attendance/participation as defined below. Logging into an online course is not sufficient to be considered participation. Participation for online courses is defined as an active process and may include posting/sending assignments to the drop box or instructor s , participating in online discussion boards, taking quizzes or exams, or otherwise communicating and/or participating in some manner that is approved by the instructor. A student who has been administratively withdrawn from class will receive an notification from the Admissions Office. This notification will outline the student s appeal options if the student wishes to re-enroll in the course. Face-to-Face Class (8 or 16 weeks) Online Class (8 week) Online Class (16 week) Student may be withdrawn from class if the student has missed four (4) consecutive class periods without prior notification to the instructor of the absences. Student may be withdrawn from class if the student has not participated (as indicated by activity reports) in the online class for the equivalent of one week.
