(1-2) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Leadership in nursing, transition into the new graduate role, and current issues in nursing are the integral components of the terminal course of this program. Students will be given an opportunity to apply their knowledge and nursing skills in a practical experience. PREREQUISITES: ADN 201 OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Discuss the development of nursing as a profession. 2. Identify major historical developments and trends that influenced the development of nursing as a profession. 3. Identify major present (legislative/legal/ethical) challenges, issues, and trends influencing nursing as a profession. 4. Identify major future (legislative/legal/ethical) challenges, issues, and trends that may influence nursing as a profession. 5. Demonstrate the ability to complete a library search for an article outside John A. Logan College's Library. 6. Demonstrate knowledge of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. 7. Identify major concepts utilized in the test plan for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN ). 8. Participate in professional activities of reading professional nursing journals, continuing education programs, and Illinois Nurses' Association meetings. 9. Discuss political trends that may affect the practice of nursing. 10. Identify various career opportunities in nursing. 11. Discuss various managerial skills of personnel in the care of patients.

This course is intended to enhance your thinking about nursing, nursing as a profession, delivery of nursing care to the public, world health, advances in health care, establishing an ethical foundation, professional duty to patients and many more subject areas. There is both a theory component and a laboratory component to this course. Online Weekly Modules Quiz on most weeks The weekly will give you the Challenge Question / Discussion for the week. Students are expected to engage in active online discussions each week. An important requirement for this course is postings by the student via the discussion board format. The discussion each week varies based upon the content covered in the module for that week, the journal articles, Joint Commission Safety Goal or any other professional question. Students are expected to post their discussion by 8am on Friday.
5 5 Extra Credit A student can receive extra credit (10 points) if the student finds a What s in the News such as an important research finding or a new biotech advancement in health care practice, etc. This must be a legitimate healthcare finding. It cannot be pop culture such as diets, gimmicks for health such as copper, magnets, etc. Students can take advantage of this particular extra credit option three (3) times. Other students can make thoughtful critical comments on the posting. Students can receive three 10 extra credits points. The student can also gain extra credit if they attend an additional 8 hour continuing education program approved by one of the AND 213 instructors. Below is an example of a What s in the News extra credit posting. What s in the News (Example) Hyperbaric Treatments and Autistic Children (Title) In March 2009, the results of a randomized, double-blind controlled study on hyperbaric oxygen therapy on autistic children was published in BMC Pediatrics. The study found that 80% of autistic children had significant improvement in social interaction, eye contact, receptive language and cognitive awareness after 40 one hour hyperbaric oxygen treatments. Online Weekly Quizzes: There will be 8 quizzes for ADN 213 Nursing Today and Tomorrow. Six (6) Nursing2014 journal articles quizzes (usually 4 journal articles per quiz) Legal Aspects of Nursing quiz Delegation and management quiz The Legal Aspect Quiz and the Delegation Quiz will be available on D2L on a specified day and time (4pm - 1am) and will have an allowed length of time to take each quiz of 20 minutes. The other six quizzes from the nursing journal articles have questions and are timed quizzes at 120 minutes for each quiz. The journal article quizzes will be available on D2L on specified Thursday evenings from 4pm to 1am. The only exception for the timed quiz is for students who have a disability and require additional time. In that case, the student needs to contact the faculty member prior to the start of quizzes to make other arrangements for the quiz. As outlined elsewhere in this syllabus, the characteristics of a student in a nursing program leading to professional
6 6 nurse licensure are: integrity, honesty, ethical beliefs and values, caring, compassion, self-direction, self-motivation, commitment, and respect. It is expected that nursing students conduct themselves with the stated characteristics while completing quizzes online. Before Beginning Your Quiz in D2L: Close down all other programs you may have running on your computer. Having multiple programs open may cause problems with your test, including loss of data. Make sure your computer is free of spyware and/or viruses. Recommend that you use Firefox when taking Tests in D2L. If you have a pop-up blocker, make sure it is turned off. Do not take the quiz during a thunderstorm, as the student may lose internet connection and lose the ability to finish the quiz. Do not open a new window or minimize a current window, D2L might throw you out of the quiz. Critical Care Nurse Meetings Students must attend two (2) American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) meetings. AACN meetings/educational presentations are held on Tuesday evenings. Check with the instructor for the specific time, location and topic. Usually, the meeting is at SIH (Carbondale) and includes a $5 charge for small meal. Your conduct and appearance at those meetings should be professional. Professional Continuing Education Program Students must attend a continuing education nursing program worth 8 contact hours. a. Must be preapproved by one of the instructors. b. Must turn in notes from the program Professional Journal Articles, Nursing2014 Students will be assigned to read specific journal articles in Nursing2014. Refer to the Journal Assignments listed in Moodle ADN 213 Nursing Today and Tomorrow for the specific date and journal article titles. Nursing2014 journals are located in the JALC Library. Please DO NOT take the journal out of the library as the other students will not have access to the journal. Many hospitals have the journal. Student can check online as many journal articles can be found online. The Library will have a folder at the Reserve Desk which will have all the nursing journal articles in it. The student can take the folder of articles to the copy machine and get their own copy to take home if they desire.
7 7 ATI RN Leadership Exams The student must take the ATI RN Leadership online practice exams (2010 A & B) and achieve a score of 90% on all exams. These exams should be completed before the Thanksgiving Break. The student must take the proctored ATI RN Leadership Exam which will be on the JALC campus as it is a secured national exam. Check with the instructor for specific date, time and location. Ethical Discussion Students will attend a dinner at a restaurant and participate in a discussion on an ethical issue, usually at Bennies in Marion. Students are divided by their section groups. The dates have been determined by the faculty and are posted in Moodle ADN 213 Nursing Today and Tomorrow. Each group will select their date from the established dates for Ethics Discussion on a first notification basis. Each section should select a representative for the group. Each student is required to obtain an article from the internet on the ethic topic. It can be either a pro or con article on the ethic topic; you can either agree or disagree with your internet article. Bring the article to the Ethics Discussion and be prepared to discuss it at the appropriate time. Give a copy of the article to a faculty member at the end of the discussion. Please do not select abortion as a topic. If the student is not able to attend the discussion group, the student can select another student group or the student can write a 4 page paper on the ethic topic decided by the original student group. 8 8 The nursing profession has entered into the 21st century and computerization is a fact of life in the implementation of patient care. The computer can assist the student to have contact with their fellow classmates, but more importantly, the computer is an excellent tool for health resources. But as an internet user, the student must be wise in deciphering what information is accurate and relevant. There are 5 computers available in the ADN Lab (room G211). There are computers located in the Career Assistance Lab (room C238); check on the door to the classroom for hours of operation. There are several computers located in the JALC Library, library hours are: Mon Thursday 7:30am 6:30pm, Friday 7:30am 4:30 pm. Computers are located in most city public libraries; contact your local library for availability and hours. Students are NOT to print power point handouts on the ADN LAB (G211) printer or in the Career Assistance Lab (room C238). Students are to print their material either from their personal printer or use the printers located in the JALC Library. Critical Note on Curriculum Testing and Program Continuation The student is enrolled in a nursing curriculum that leads to State of Illinois (or any state) registration as a professional registered nurse. As a profession, there is a legal expectation of professional duty to patients. This requires the student to engage in serious study of pathophysiology and nursing interventions. The profession of nursing requires that individuals be self-motivated and self-directed, and be able to use critical thinking skills to make clinical judgments and decisions about the safe and effective delivery of health care to patients. The student will be taking many national nursing achievement exams during the nursing curriculum. The student should review each syllabus to identify which national achievement exams are a part of the requirements for each course. ATI RN COMPREHENSIVE PREDICTOR EXAM (Mock NCLEX) This is a reminder to students that at the end of the ADN program in May, a week before final exams, students will be required to take the ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam developed by a national nursing testing company, Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI). The ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam will cover questions in mental health,
9 9 pediatrics, maternity, medical nursing, surgical nursing, nursing process, leadership, providing a safe, effective care environment, maintaining physiological integrity, maintaining psychological integrity and promotion of health. The student is required to pass the ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam at national average in order to pass the spring semester nursing class, ADN 220 Nursing Care of the Adult II. In preparation for this exam, students should review their scores on ATI RN Comprehensive Exams in each nursing area to identify their competencies and deficiencies. The student should seek remediation for any deficiencies, follow their individualized education plan, take achievement exams when required or when offered, study NCLEX-RN questions weekly and actively pursue competency in preparation for ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam and the NCLEX-RN Exam. The student should be actively utilizing a NCLEX-RN Review book or the ATI resource books throughout the academic year. If the student does not pass the ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam with a score at national average, the student will receive an Incomplete (I) for ADN 220 Nursing Care of the Adult II and will be allowed one (1) more opportunity to pass the ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam with a score of national average. If the student has not passed the ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam after the initial testing and one (1) more attempt, then the student will receive a failing grade (E) for ADN 220 Nursing Care of the Adult II. The student will then be required to repeat ADN 220 Nursing Care of the Adult II. Re-entry into the program may be difficult as a student space may not be available. Repeat/Re-entry/Transfer Students A student who has failed a class (even if the student is continuing with other nursing classes) or who has left the ADN Program for academic reasons or personal reasons is required to RETAKE the ATI LPN STEP Exam prior to re-entry into the ADN Program and achieve a score at the national average score or above. Transfer students are also required to take the ATI LPN STEP Exam prior to entry into the ADN Program. The student has two attempts to achieve the national average score or above on the ATI LPN STEP EXAM prior to entry/re-entry/transfer into the ADN Program. It is recommended that the student begin this process the semester before the desired repeat/re-entry/transfer date. If the student is repeating ANY nursing class and that class is their terminal class and even if the student has taken the ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam in the past, the student is required to retake the ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam and meet the requirements listed under the section Critical Note on Curriculum Testing and Program Continuation. The student will be given the initial attempt and then a second attempt to get a score of national average before being allowed to repeat an ADN course.
10 10 Student Success Center (Room C219). Services available for students include tutoring (both scheduled one-on-one tutoring and walk-in tutoring) and Disability Support Services. Students can drop in during the hours of operation for tutoring in the Math Help Room (C219 and C223) or the Biology Help Room (C243A). To receive one-onone tutoring, students should make a request early in the semester in the Student Success Center. The Student Success Center is also the place to arrange accommodations. John A. Logan College will make reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Contact the coordinator of Disability Support Services, Room C219B, ext. 8516, for more information. The coordinator must determine eligibility and arrange appropriate academic accommodations. However, it is the student s responsibility to register in advance of a school term with Disability Support Services and to turn in a class schedule each term to ensure accommodations are arranged. For assistance with writing assignments in any college courses, students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center in C214. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. Administrative Withdrawal. A student may be withdrawn from a class for lack of attendance/participation as defined below. Logging into an online course is not sufficient to be considered participation. Participation for online courses is defined as an active process and may include posting/sending assignments to the drop box or instructor s , participating in online discussion boards, taking quizzes or exams, or otherwise communicating and/or participating in some manner that is approved by the instructor. A student who has been administratively withdrawn from class will receive an notification from the Admissions Office. This notification will outline the student s appeal options if the student wishes to re-enroll in the course.

Academic Dishonesty Individuals are expected to demonstrate integrity in their academic endeavors throughout their college careers. Any of these practices will result in failure of the course and will result in dismissal from the nursing program for one year.
