1 JOHN A. LOGAN COLLEGE S. Trammell SM 13 BIO 225 GENETICS 3 cr. (3-0) (Online) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course examines gene structure and function. Cytogenetics, transmission genetics, molecular genetics and population genetics are explored during the semester. Special attention is given to applications of gene technology and the impact of genetic knowledge and technology on humanity. PREREQUISITES: None COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Describe and apply key concepts and terminology related to genome organization, structure and function from the perspectives of molecular, transmission, cytogenetics, and population genetics. 2. Use, evaluate, explain, and interpret information from genetic analysis techniques such as karyotyping, pedigree analysis, FISH, haplotype analysis, and risk estimates. 3. Identify and describe natural and artificial processes that can alter a genome. Recognize and predict some possible results of such genome alteration both in nature and in biotechnology. 4. Relate genetic processes to DNA-based disorders (including but not limited to inherited disorders) at the cellular and organismal levels. 5. Identify and evaluate ways that increases in genetic information and advances in genetic technology currently benefit or may benefit humanity. 6. Identify and evaluate ethical, legal, and social issues related to increases in genetic information and advances in genetic technology. 7. Use genetic principles and terminology to solve case-based problems individually and/or in small groups. 8. Summarize and discuss current genetics issues with other students and with instructor.

You can send it via or drop it at my office, C235e. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Summer 13 BIO 225 Students: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: The work in Biology 225 Genetics is entirely online. This format for course delivery is not for everyone so please make sure that you are adequately motivated to work on your own on a regular basis. Contrary to what you may think, online courses require more effort and time commitment from both the instructor and the students. You must complete the readings and other assignments in

3 3 a timely manner in order to perform well on weekly quizzes and homework. Any work turned in later than the due date will have late points deducted, no matter what the excuse. Also, note when lecture exams and the final exam are scheduled. You know NOW what is expected, so plan accordingly. Blackboard Make sure you have access to the Internet and an active account in JALC s Blackboard (BB) system. If you do not have a BB account, you must have one by week one of the semester. Go to At the bottom of the homepage, find My JALC. Click on Blackboard login. On the right side of the page, click on Don t have an account? Fill out the information there. WRITE DOWN YOUR USER NAME AND PASSWORD so you don t forget them later. IF YOU DO FORGET, do NOT create another account. If you have technical/computer questions, I cannot answer your questions. These people can. (I will answer course content questions.) Information about online courses is also in My JALC under online course resources. If you have not taken an online course, I encourage you to do the BB orientation there. When you log in to BB, you must enroll in Bio 225-Trammell. Look for courses tab. There is a list of all online courses. Find Bio 225 and click on enroll. This will take you to the Bio 225 homepage. Please familiarize yourself with materials there. The course outline in syllabus shows your weekly assignments. When you go to the BIO 225 home page, you will see course documents on left in menu. Please note your quiz and tentative exam dates there. Plan now to be free for a 2-3 hour block of time on the exam dates. Make sure your computer is fast enough and new enough to take the tests on BB without problems or interruptions. If you don t have a new computer, then USE THE CAMPUS COMPUTERS in any of many computer labs. Also on the home page, there will be announcements that are important for the course. You are expected to log in a minimum of 3 times per week. I will have a record of the dates and times of your log-ins throughout the course. Quizzes Chapter quizzes for each test unit will only be available to take for a small window of time. You will see the schedule in course documents. No excuses will be accepted. The quiz points make up 15-20% of the 600 course points. Be smart prepare for them and complete the quizzes week by week. Five of your lowest quiz scores, out of 15 total, will be dropped before calculating your final points. The only reason any makeup work would be allowed is if the JALC server goes down and BB is unavailable during the testing time. In the event that your home computer is not working, there are several computer labs on campus for you to complete your work. A breakdown/problem at home is NOT a valid excuse for a

4 4 makeup. If you are out of the college district and far from the JALC campus, try a computer in your public library or at another educational institution. The quizzes are timed, 10 minutes, and consist of 10 questions. If you go over the allotted time by more than 15 seconds, you will receive a 0 score. These quizzes are located under assignments in your BB course. Please note the quiz deadlines. To avoid problems with late submissions and lost points, do not push deadlines too close. Start work early. Exams There will be four non-cumulative exams throughout the semester, worth 100 points each. Exams will consist of approximately (this may vary) objective type questions: multiple choice, true/false and matching; however, there will be some genetics problems to calculate or short answer as well. The four lecture exams will be timed and available to take for a 48-hour period on the test days. There will be NO makeups. Please note the test dates and make plans now at work and at home to be available. Cheating/Collusion: All work in the course is done individually and must be completed by YOU and you alone. Working together with another student on quizzes, tests and other assignments is considered cheating and will result in your removal from the course. If you have questions about this policy or what is considered cheating, please contact me. Also read the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook available on the JALC website. Final Project/Paper A final project on a topic of your choice will be worth 50 points and be due toward the end of the semester. Details will be given to you around midterm. Your textbook has a website that can help you prepare for exams and quizzes. I encourage you to take advantage of this website. Look on the back of your Lewis, 9 th ed. textbook for the website: There are practice quizzes, flashcards for terminology and supplemental materials for each of the text chapters. Some exam questions may come from here. If you need to contact me, me at: suetrammell@jalc.edu. Please IDENTIFY YOURSELF AND BIO 225 WHEN YOU WRITE. I HAVE MANY OTHER STUDENTS. If and when you have questions, I will try my best to get back to you by 24 hours during the week. It may be longer on a weekend. When you turn in an assignment or take an exam, you will get feedback approximately 10 days after the due date. Homework assignments are to be sent to messages in Blackboard. Do not send assignments to my college .

5 5 At times, you will be asked to post your opinion on a question or to post answers to homework on the Discussion Board. These postings need to be submitted on time and consist of more than I agree with Joe. Your class participation is part of your final course grade. When you are asked to post a comment, please go to Discussion Board for your course. If you are starting a new topic of conversation, start a new discussion thread. If you are responding to someone s comments, then click on reply. Be precise in your postings, edit-spell/check what you write, and always be respectful of the ideas of others. Disagreement with classmates and the author are okay, but verbal attacks and rudeness are not. Please read the Netiquette information on the tabs at the top of the JALC Online Portal Student Success Center. Tutors may be obtained through the Student Success Center. English Writing Center/Tutoring. For assistance with writing assignments in any college courses, students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center in C214. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. Administrative Withdrawal. A student may be withdrawn from a class for lack of attendance/participation as defined below. Logging into an online course is not sufficient to be considered participation. Participation for online courses is defined as an active process and may include posting/sending assignments to the drop box or instructor s , participating in online discussion boards, taking quizzes or exams, or otherwise communicating and/or participating in some manner that is approved by the instructor. A student who has been administratively withdrawn from class will receive an notification from the Admissions Office. This notification will outline the student s appeal options if the student wishes to re-enroll in the course.
