1 PROGRAM ASSESSMENT MATRIX NURSING AAS Degree Submitted by Pamela Covault Current as of 2/24/12 Outcomes: We believe the purpose of associate degree nursing education is to prepare graduates to practice as a Professional Nurse. The graduate with the Associate Degree in will: 1. Integrate caring behaviors in practicing the art and science of nursing within a diverse population. 2. Implement professional standards and scope of practice within legal, ethical, and regulatory frameworks. 3. Collaborate with clients and members of the interdisciplinary health care team to optimize client outcomes. 4. Adapt through the use of the nursing process the ability to think critically and make safe and effective clinical judgments incorporating evidenced-based practice. 5. Manage care and provide leadership to meet client needs using available resources and current technology. 6. At the completion of the course the student will complete the following with 76% average: 1. Identify the professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities of nursing practice. 2. Identify one effective study method for the student s predominate style of learning. 3. Apply components of the nursing process. 4. Demonstrate competency of basic nursing skills. NURS 102: Dosage Calculations Upon the successful completion of this course the student should be able to, at 76% or greater: 1. Compute basic medication dosage calculations. 2. 3 NURS 111: Foundations of As a practical nursing student, objectives reflect the role of provider of care. At the completion of Foundations, the student must pass a PN nationally normed Fundamentals Exam on the following outcomes. The student will: 1. Identify basic needs of clients and apply components of the nursing process to develop a plan of care to meet those needs. 2. Demonstrate care related to medication administration. 3. Explore patients ability to cope, adapt and problem solve health related events. 4. Identify components of therapeutic communication and factors that influence communication in simple structured situations. 5. Identify safety and infection control procedures to protect patients and health care personnel. 6. Demonstrate 95% proficiency in dosage calculations. 7. Use critical thinking skills to solve basic problems. 8. Apply theory knowledge when caring for patients in the long term care setting. NURS 121: Care of the Adult I As a practical nursing student, objectives reflect the role of provider of care. At the completion of Care of the Adult I & II, the student must pass a PN nationally normed Medical-Surgical Exam on the following outcomes. The student will: 1. Apply critical thinking skills to solve nursing problems. 2. Use components of the nursing process in promoting functional health patterns of adult and surgical patients in conditions of fluids and electrolytes, neurological, cardiovascular, oncological, blood & lymphatics, musculoskeletal and immune function when planning and providing nursing care during the acute and chronic phases of illness. 3. Apply safety & infection control procedures to protect patients and staff when applying the nursing process in the workplace. 4. Provide for the needs of the patient in the prevention and early detection of health problems and illness. 5. Diminish the patient s risk of developing complications and/or dysfunctional health patterns related to treatments, procedures or existing conditions. 6. Determine and report life-threatening phases of illness. 7. Demonstrate knowledge of medications, safe medication preparation and administrations skills. 8. 4 NURS 122: Pharmacology for At the completion of the course the student will be able to pass a nationally normed Pharmacology exam and unit/final exams on the following outcomes: 1. Discuss drug administration as a component of safe, effective nursing care, utilizing the nursing process. 2. Explain the basic mechanism of drug action and major adverse effects for each drug class and natural alternatives. 3. Discuss drug implications for nursing care throughout the lifespan including cultural considerations. 4. Ability to use critical thinking skills to make clinical judgment regarding use of medications. NURS 131: Care of the Adult II As a practical nursing student, objectives reflect the role of provider of care. At the completion of Care of the Adult I and II, the student will meet minimum requirements for a nationally-normed PN Medical-Surgical Exam on the following outcomes. The student will: 1. Solve problems through the use of critical thinking skills. 2. Effectively apply components of the nursing process in promoting functional health patterns of adult and surgical patients in conditions of the sensory, respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal, urinary, reproductive, and integumentary systems when planning and providing nursing care during the acute and chronic phases of illness. 3. Discriminate between therapeutic and non-therapeutic communication skills when caring for patients or working with staff in the clinical site. 4. Apply safety and infection control procedures to protect patients and staff when applying the nursing process in the workplace. 5. Provide for the needs of the patient in the prevention and early detection of health problems and illness. 6. Identify methods to diminish the patient s risk of developing complications and/or dysfunctional health patterns related to treatments, procedures or existing conditions. 7. 5 NURS 141: Family I As a practical nursing student, objectives reflect the role of provider of care. At the completion of Family Care I, the student must pass a PN nationally normed Maternal-Newborn Care Exam and Care of Children Exam on the following outcomes. The student will: 1. Apply critical thinking skills to solve nursing problems. 2. Effectively apply components of the nursing process in promoting functional health patterns of the mother, child and the family when planning nursing care. 3. Discriminate between therapeutic and non-therapeutic communication skills when caring for patients or working with staff in the workplace. 4. Identify safety & infection control procedures to protect patients and staff when applying the nursing process in the clinical setting. 5. Facilitate the progress of families & children through the stages of normal growth and development. 6. Provide for the needs of the maternal-child patient in the prevention and early detection of health problems and illness. 7. Identify methods to diminish the maternal-child patient s risk of developing complications and/or dysfunctional health patterns related to treatments, procedures or existing conditions. 8. Provide care during the acute or chronic phase of illness in the child. 9. Identify appropriate care related to the administration of medications. 10. Collaborate with health care team members to facilitate effective patient care in the maternal-child setting. NURS 251: Family II At the completion of Family II, the student must pass a RN nationally normed Maternal-Newborn Exam on the following outcomes. The student will: 1. Apply critical thinking skills to solve nursing problems when caring for the childbearing family including high-risk situations. 2. Effectively apply all components of the nursing process in promoting functional health patterns of the child-bearing family including highrisk situations. 3. Discriminate between therapeutic and non-therapeutic communication skills when caring for the child-bearing family in high-risk situations or working with staff in the workplace. 4. Determine safe, effective technique when completing technical skills. 5. Formulate priorities using sound nursing judgment when completing assessments and nursing care. 6. Determine appropriate nursing care related to the administration of medications and parenteral therapies. 6 NURS 261: Mental Health At the completion of 261/ Mental Health, the student will pass the ATI exit exam at 68%. The student will achieve the following outcomes in Nurs 261: 1. Apply basic concepts of nursing care relating to a psychiatric diagnosis, pathophysiology, non-pharmacological treatments, pharmacologic treatments, and related bio/psycho/social influences on the mental health disease process. 2. Utilize critical thinking skills based on knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, and self evaluation when caring for clients in a mental health care setting. 3. Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills and interventions with clients in verbal, nonverbal, and written modalities. 4. Apply all components of the nursing process in a priority manner to promote functional health patterns when caring for clients in a mental health care setting. 5. Prioritize and apply technical skills and techniques necessary for safe and effective client care. NURS 273: Care of the Complex Adult Upon completion of the course the student will pass a RN nationally normed Medical-Surgical Exam on the following outcomes. The student will: 1. Utilize critical thinking skills when coordinating the care of complex medical-surgical patients. 2. Integrate all components of the nursing process in promoting functional health patterns of the complex medical-surgical patient. 3. Plan safe, effective nursing care for the complex medical-surgical patient. 4. Determine strategies that reduce risk potential of the complex medical-surgical patient. 5. Integrate knowledge of safe medication administration and parenteral therapies. NURS 274: Clinical Care of the Complex Adult Upon completion of the course the student will pass a RN nationally normed Medical-Surgical Exam on the following outcomes. The student will: 1. Apply critical thinking skills when managing the care of multiple patients. 2. Apply and evaluate all components of the nursing process in promoting functional health patterns of the complex medical-surgical patient. 3. Provide safe, effective nursing care when completing technical skills. 4. Implement strategies that reduce risk potential of the complex medical-surgical patient. 5. Demonstrate 95% proficiency in dosage calculation and provide safe care when administering medications and parenteral therapies.
