1 Hours Revised: Fall 2015 PNE 136 Maternal and Child Health Nursing Prerequisites: None Course Description: Examines pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and newborn care from a family centered approach, Covers complications related to childbearing. 2 22TPNE TMaternal and Child Health Nursing Course Outcomes At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: I. Maternal Health 1. Identify the anatomy of the female reproductive system. 2. Explain the functions of the external, internal, and accessory female organs in human reproduction. 3. Describe the influence of hormones in the female reproductive process. 4. Describe embryonic development. 5. Describe fetal development and maturation of body systems 6. Describe the development and functions of the placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic fluid. 7. Describe the normal course of pregnancy and the purpose of prenatal care. 8. Identify fetal and maternal complications that may occur during pregnancy. 9. Describe the four components of the birth process. 10. Explain the normal processes of childbirth: premonitory signs, mechanisms of birth, and stages and phases of labor. 11. Determine appropriate nursing care for the intrapartum client. 12. Describe factors that influence a woman s comfort during labor. 13. Discuss common interventions for the woman experiencing pain associated with labor. 14. Explain common nursing responsibilities during the birth. 15. Discuss common complications during labor and birth, the common interventions, and nursing responsibilities for each. 16. Determine nursing care of the mother during the immediate post birth period. 17. Describe the normal physiological and emotional changes during puerperium. 18. Describe common problems occurring in the puerperium, including symptoms, treatment, and prevention.

3 19. Explain aspects of preventative health care for women. 20. Describe various methods of birth control. II. Pediatrics 1. Describe normal reflexes, characteristics and care of the newborn. 2. Describe the causes of preterm birth, and the physical characteristics and care of the preterm and post-term newborn. 3. Describe common congenital malformations of the newborn. 4. Describe normal growth and development of children. 5. Describe special issues of children, including divorce, latchkey, and homelessness. 6. Describe the child s experience of hospitalization and identify ways to lessen the stress of hospitalization for the child and the child s parents. 7. Develop pediatric care plans and explain use of pediatric clinical pathways. 8. Identify essential safety measures applicable to the hospitalized child. 9. Perform age-specific procedures related to the pediatric client, including medication administration. 10. Identify special concerns of pediatric nursing. 11. Discuss child and domestic abuse in the family. 12. Describe the nursing care of the child with terminal conditions. 13. Describe nursing care of children with a health disorder. 14. Discuss diseases and disorders of children using a body systems approach. 15. Identify characteristics of common childhood communicable diseases and the nurse s role in the immunization of children.
