1 Course: NUR 285 NCLEX RN Instructor: Karen Balyeat MSN, RN Address: Phone: Office: A309 Office Hours: Wednesday 1:00-3:00pm & Thursday 8:00am-11:00am Beginning Date of Course: January 15, 2014 Times/Location: Thursday or Friday 1:00 pm 2:53 pm in A313 Course Description: This course is designed to assist the student in reviewing for the NCLEX-RN exam. It will cover test taking strategies and review of the content areas covered during the NCLEX-RN exam. The student will gain experience with online testing and special format questions used in the NCLEX-RN exam. Students will take the ATI proctored comprehensive test at the end of the semester. This course also covers strategies to be successful in securing a position as an RN and being prepared for practice as a novice RN. Credits: 2 Contacts: 32 hours Pre-requisites: Current enrollment in the ADN program or graduate from an ADN program Co-requisites: None Course Objectives: 1. Complete license application and testing forms required to take the NCLEX-RN exam. 2. Become familiar with the NCLEX-RN test plan and prepare for the NCLEX-RN utilizing proven strategies for success 3. Practice multiple choice and alternate format questions. 4. Integrate knowledge of pharmacology, pathophysiology, and nutrition as well as concepts from nursing courses and evidence-based practice to the care of patient's throughout the lifespan. 5. Display organizational, time management, priority setting, and decision making skills when analyzing NCLEX-RN type questions. 6. Express confidence and list behaviors that will enhance success in in passing the RN NCLEX exam. 7. Express confidence and list behaviors that will enhance success in attaining and being successful in a position as a graduate RN. 8. Verbalize importance of continuing education; such as BSN completion. Integrate knowledge of present ADN courses when preparing for the NCLEX-RN Exam 2. Recognize the NCLEX-RN test format and plan in order to successfully prepare for the Exam 3. Incorporate Test taking strategies for successful completion of the NCLEX-RN Exam 4. Evaluate personal Strengths and Weaknesses in order to adequately prepare for successful passage of the NCLEX-RN Exam 5. Further develop an understanding of critical thinking/clinical reasoning required in decision making by the RN. 6. Discussion and understanding of the areas of the NCLEX client needs: Nursing Science, Safe and Effective care of the environment, Health promotion and Maintenance, Psychosocial integrity, and Physiological integrity. 7. Practice and discussion of the various test type questions used on the NCLEX exam including: multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, multiple response, prioritizing (ordered response), drag and drop, questions that contain picture or graphic (hot spot), chart/exhibit, or graphic option items, an audio or video item formats. 8. Discussion and understanding of strategies to successfully attain a position as a graduate RN and how to be successful as a graduate RN. 9. Discussion and understanding of the importance of continuing education such as a BSN program. Class schedule as attached Textbooks: Handheld device is required along with the recommended Skyscape applications which include drug information, laboratory tests, nursing diagnosis, and medical dictionary. 3 Supplies: Access to ACES or a home computer is a must. Computer problems will not be an excused reason for assignments being late. Turning Point Technology response card Grading Scale: A C A C B D B D B D C F 59 & below A minimum grade of 80% is required to pass the course and progress in the nursing program. Grades will not be rounded up. Evaluation for this course is based on points and consists of: Tests & quizzes online (Moodle & ATI). Assignments as on attached class schedule. o Points will be subtracted for late assignments. (20% per assignment/day). o Points will be awarded for clicker questions. Tests: Any test missed will be made up with the instructor. It is your responsibility to contact the instructor for a makeup time and date o Late tests will receive a 5% deduction. o A 10% deduction will occur if the test is not taken within 2 weekdays. Each student will have this option a maximum of 2 times. All late tests after the student has taken 2 late tests will result in a zero score. o A score of zero will be given if the test is not taken within one calendar week. o An alternate test may be used when late testing is necessary. A student may attend a lecture on either day if it is offered more than one day/week (in the ADN program, for example). Late online quizzes will not be able to be made up Test Days: Cell phones will be collected. Students will be requested to stagger their seating arrangement. Pencils will be provided by the instructor. Students may not wear hats or have anything on their desk while testing. Collaborative testing: o Instructors may utilize collaborative testing after the student has individually taken the test. o Collaborative testing cannot be made up if the student is absent on collaborative testing day. o Extra credit points for collaborative testing results will follow the following guidelines: Students must be present for the entire collaborative exam in order to earn any extra credit points. o Extra credit points earned by the group will not be credited to any student who received less than 80% on their individual exam. o Extra credit points assigned for collaborative testing will not exceed the following: A =2 extra credit points B =1 extra credit point 2014 Page 3

4 C or less = 0 extra credit point Take Home Tests: Questions on any take home/open book tests will be worth a maximum of ¼ point. A maximum of one open book or take home test is allowed per course. Quizzes: Quizzes (worth 10 points or less) will not be able to be made up if students are late to class or absent the day the quiz is given. Quizzes with more than a 10 point value may be made up with 10 points subtracted from the grade earned. Points for online quizzes will be counted only if completed prior to the assigned date & time. No points will be awarded if completed late. Extra Credit: Extra credit is not available in any nursing course except in those courses in which instructors choose to utilize collaborative testing. See guidelines above. Assignments: There will be weekly assignments each designed to strengthen one of the content areas on the NCLEX-RN test plan. ATI: ATI practice tests may be assigned throughout the course. ATI proctored tests will be given as assigned. The instructor will assign appropriate remediation to any student who receives less than a Level 2. Each ATI proctored test in this course will be assigned specific points. ATI proctored tests are required and are expected to be completed during the testing times provided. Proctored tests not completed by the date assigned will receive a score of Less than Level Two with the point implications as noted. A student who does not take the test when scheduled must make arrangements with the instructor to take the test. A grade of incomplete will be given until the proctored test is completed. No points will be awarded when the late test is completed. The ATI Comprehensive test will be given at the completion of the course in place of a final exam and will count toward the final score. Dishonesty/Cheating Dishonesty of any kind, including cheating on examinations or any assigned work, will result in a zero on the assignment, a failing grade for the course, or removal from the nursing program. The consequence will be determined by the seriousness of the infraction and at the discretion of the instructor. Attendance Expectation and Consequences: Since this is an NCLEX Review class it is in the student s best interest to attend each class because different content is covered each session. A student may miss 1 class without any consequences (Assignments must still be turned in on time). For each class over 1 that a student misses a make-up assignment will be assigned and must be completed with a minimum score of 80% Sleeping in class will be treated as an absence Page 4

5 Closure of the Houghton Gogebic Community College campus due to inclimate weather will result in students residing in proximity to the Houghton campus being excused from lecture that day on the Ironwood campus. Students will be required to make up missed lecture which will be in the form of an assignment related to the lecture topic that may include a paper and/or viewing recorded missed slides with audio lecture. This will be an excused absence. In the event of a scheduled exam on that day, the students will be required to take the test the next day that the Houghton campus is open. There will be no deduction for late testing if the test is taken at that time. Injury/Medical Condition: A student who is unable to safely perform any of the requirements of class, lab, or clinical due to an injury or medical condition (including pregnancy) is to notify his/her instructor immediately. A physicians slip is required for any restrictions. Students unable to participate at the level expected may need to complete the course at a time when they are able. Being late is viewed as disrespectful to fellow classmates and your instructor. o A 5% deduction will be assessed from the following test beginning with the 3 rd tardy. o Five percent will continue to be deducted for every tardy after that. Skills laboratory attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to be prepared to practice skills planned. o In the event that a lab skills day is missed: Students must notify the instructor Students must make arrangements with a tutor, classmate, or instructor to learn and practice the content missed. Students will receive an appropriate assignment that will provide for an equal amount of time and effort to complete. Full attendance at agency days, SIM days, and other days beyond normal lecture days is an expectation of the course. o If any part of these days are missed, students will receive an appropriate assignment that will provide for an equal amount of time and effort to complete. (equal to the time missed) A record of total absences and tardies is recorded in each nursing course. This record will be considered along with GPA when considering admission of a student to the ADN program. It will also be used when completing reference forms Other Expectations Interruption of class time by cell phone use (including texting) is not acceptable. Cell phones will be collected at the beginning of each class and will be available during breaks. Students are expected to be respectful to both the instructor and to fellow students. ipod touch hand-held devices may be used in class. Students will follow the Policy for use of Hand-held devices. Students are expected to come to class prepared for the content to be presented. Active participation has been shown to improve critical thinking and reasoning. 6 Each student will have an 8 hour community service requirement in the PN program and a 12 hour community service requirement in the ADN program. This requirement will be monitored by the full time Medical Surgical Instructor. Students must use their gogebic.edu address when communicating with the instructor or sending in assignments.
