1 NORTHWEST-SHOALS COMMUNITY COLLEGE DIVISION OF HEALTH STUDIES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM I. TITLE OF COURSE: NUR 102 Fundamentals of Nursing II. PREREQUISITE(S)/COREQUISITE(S) Co-Requisites: NUR 103 Health Assessment NUR 104 Introduction to Pharmacology BIO 201 Human Anatomy and Physiology I IV. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides opportunities to develop competencies necessary to meet the needs of individuals throughout the lifespan in a safe, legal, and ethical manner using the nursing process. Students learn concepts and theories basic to the art and science of nursing. The role of the nurse as a member of the healthcare team is emphasized. Students are introduced to the concepts of client needs, safety, communication, teaching/learning, critical thinking, ethical-legal, cultural diversity, nursing history, and the program s philosophy of nursing. Additionally, this course introduces psychomotor nursing skills needed to assist individuals in meeting basic human needs. Skills necessary for maintaining microbial, physical, and psychological safety are introduced along with skills needed in therapeutic interventions. At the conclusion of this course students demonstrate competency in performing basic nursing skills for individuals with common health alterations. V. GENERAL EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Nursing 102 course objectives support the college s Institutional Goal # 2, through meeting educational objective # 9 that states upon successful completion of their chosen program of study all associate in applied degree graduates should be able to Apply the knowledge and demonstrate the skills needed for appropriate entry into the occupations for which they are trained. GENERAL EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (Con t) Upon completion of NUR 102 students will be able to: Promote safe and secure environment Provide care for clients with selected integumentary system alterations Assist clients with activities of daily living Assess vital signs Use therapeutic communication skills Demonstrate professional behaviors Provide needs-based care according to Maslow s Hierarchy Utilize the nursing process and critical thinking skills Manage comfort, pain, sleep, and rest Provide for nutrition/fluid balance Administer medication through tubes Maintain oxygenation Promote, maintain, and restore bowel/bladder elimination Explain issues associated with the aging process VI. COURSE OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCIES 1. Identify measures that promote a safe and secure environment. 2. Demonstrate activities of daily living. 3. Demonstrate the skill of assessing vital signs for clients throughout the lifespan. 4. Use therapeutic communication skills. 5. Demonstrate professional behaviors expected of nurses. 6. Utilize Maslow s Hierarchy of needs in providing care to clients throughout the lifespan. 7. 3 VIII. EVALUATION The following learning activities will be completed at a satisfactory level and be the basis for the course grade: A. Course Grade 1. Seven (7) equally weighted / averaged module tests =60% 2. Comprehensive Final Exam = 40% 3. Assignments: Demonstration of selected procedures Article Critiques Assignments will be graded "Satisfactory" or "Unsatisfactory". o Any "Unsatisfactory" assignment must be revised and resubmitted until "Satisfactory" is achieved. 4. Clinical skills performed in the laboratory or health care facility must be mastered at a satisfactory level to progress, regardless of the theory grade. B. Evaluation of General Educational Objectives General Education Objective #9: All associate in applied degree graduates and certificate recipients should be able to Apply the knowledge and demonstrate the skills needed for appropriate entry into the occupations for which they are trained. Obtainment of this objective is evaluated by: (1) satisfactory or unsatisfactory S or U clinical performance and care based on a written clinical performance evaluation tool, and (2) the percentage of students that successfully pass the course with a grade of 75 or higher. C. Use of Findings: At the completion of NUR 102, faculty will review and evaluate the course. Changes will be made as appropriate. IX. POLICIES A. Americans with Disabilities Act Policy It is the policy of Northwest Alabama Community College to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Any student covered under this act needing and requiring reasonable accommodations for this class should notify Linda Waide at or in the Career Center. The College will determine if the accommodations can be met. B. Attendance policy Class attendance is considered to be essential to the accomplishment of course objectives, excessive absences, more than 20% of the class meetings for a course, are discouraged. These absences also include any absences accrued during late registration. Failure to adhere to the 20% policy may result in a failing grade based on academic performance. Any variation of this policy must be approved through the Vice President of Instruction. A student who is absent due to required participation in a school activity must be allowed to make up work, according to guidelines issued by individual instructors. (Excused absences see pg Northwest-Shoals Community College catalog & student handbook) C. Withdrawal policy The student should withdraw from the class before poor attendance interferes with the student s ability to achieve the objectives required in the course. Withdrawal from class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid and prohibit progression in the nursing programs. The Last day to withdraw from full-term with a W is October 23, D. 5 XIII. POLICIES (Cont d) E. Missed test/ Make-up The instructor must be notified in advance when a student will be missing a test. If a student must be absent on a scheduled test day, a make-up examination will be given prior to final exams. The essay format may be utilized for make-up tests. (tentative test make-up day ) XIV.
