(2-2) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to further the student s knowledge in gastrointestinal/ genitourinary function and those associated disorders commonly encountered in nursing practice. PREREQUISITES: Acceptance into the Hybrid Online AAS in Nursing Program Unencumbered active Illinois LPN license Successful completion of ADN 203, 205, 206, 207. OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate competency of gastrointestinal assessment. 2. Demonstrate competency of genital-urinary assessment. 3. Discuss the pathophysiology underlying specific gastrointestinal and genitalurinary disorders. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the diagnostic tests used in the care of patients with gastrointestinal and genital-urinary disorders. 5. Demonstrates an understanding of the pharmacological regimen of medications used in specific gastrointestinal and genital-urinary disorders. 6. Performs safe administration and of gastrointestinal and genital-urinary medications 7. Perform the delivery of nursing care in accordance with the Illinois Nurse Practice Act (2007) and ANA Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice to individuals experiencing gastrointestinal and genital-urinary problems.

Exhibit professional and ethical behaviors in accordance with ANA Code of Ethics and the National Student Nurse Association (NSNA) Code of Academic and Clinic Professional Conduct Demonstrate critical thinking skills in the acute care setting. 10. Demonstrate a caring attitude in both nursing theory and nursing practice. 11. Communicate effectively with patients, patient s families, facility staff, and peers. 12. Individualize nursing care incorporating the values and cultural differences for clients. 3 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 3 Welcome to ADN 210 Gastrointestinal and Genital-Urinary Nursing Interventions. This is a hybrid online computer class. This course is intended to enhance your thinking and nursing care delivery for those patients experiencing gastrointestinal and genital-urinary disorders. There is both a theory component and a laboratory component to this course. THEORY PORTION The student is enrolled in a nursing curriculum that leads to State of Illinois (or any state) registration as a professional registered nurse. As a profession, there is a legal expectation of professional duty to patients. This requires the student to be engaged in serious study of pathophysiology and nursing interventions. The profession of nursing requires that individuals be self-motivated and self-directed, and be able to use critical thinking skills to make clinical judgments and decisions about the safe and effective delivery of health care to patients experiencing gastrointestinal and genital-urinary problems. The student will be taking many national nursing achievement exams during the ADN nursing curriculum. The student should review each syllabus to identify which national achievement exams are a part of the requirements for each course. Each week there will be a module covering a specific topic of gastrointestinal or genitalurinary nursing practice. Refer to the Weekly Online Guide for the specific topic for each week. The weekly module topics are located on Moodle ADN 210 GI/GU Nursing. On Moodle, the student will find the Weekly Online Guide, power points, videos, word documents, quizzes, etc. for each module. Students are expected to review the online Guide each week for the specific assignments and to complete the weekly online assignments, LABORATORY PORTION SimMan scenarios Study NCLEX-RN type questions on gastrointestinal and genital-urinary nursing care CLINICAL OBJECTIVES: 1. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in the acute care setting. 2. Provides for the delivery of nursing care in accordance with Illinois Nurse Practice Act (2007) for adults with gastrointestinal or genital-urinary disorders. 3. Develop caring relationships with ill adults in the health care setting.

4 4 4. Communicate effectively with patients, patient s families, facility staff, and peers. 5. Exhibit professional behaviors in accordance with ANA standards of professional performance in delivery of care for ill adults. 6. Individualize nursing care according to the values and cultural differences of clients. 7. Provide age specific care. 8. Demonstrate competent care of clients with gastrointestinal or genital-urinary disorders. 9. Provide safe competent care of clients during clinical experience. Student Success Center. English Writing Center/Tutoring. For assistance with writing assignments in any college course, students are encouraged to visit "The Write Place" in Room E109. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping.

5 Academic Dishonesty Individuals are expected to demonstrate integrity in their academic endeavors throughout their college careers. Practices such as cheating on examinations, plagiarism, fraud, misrepresentation or falsification of data, theft, destruction of examinations or papers, alteration of records and/or communication of examination questions and other acts of academic dishonesty are not acceptable behavior. Any of these practices will result in failure of the course and will result in dismissal from the nursing program for one year. At the end of one year, the Re-entry policy will be followed in the Nursing Handbook. 5 METHOD OF EVALUATION: There are certain characteristics expected of a professional registered nurse by the public we serve. The following characteristics are expected of ADN nursing students to pass this course: integrity, honesty, ethical beliefs and values, caring, compassion, self-direction, self-motivation, commitment, and respect. Online theory modules and assignments (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory)* Clinical Practice/lab simulation (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory)* Exams *If written clinical and/or theory assignments are unsatisfactory, they must be revised and turned in within one week. Quizzes (6) 20% GI Exam I 40% GU Exam II 40% ATI COMPETENCY AND COMPLETION OF THE ADN PROGRAM The student is required to take the proctored ATI Comprehensive Medical-Surgical Nursing Exam at the end of the ADN Program and pass it with a Level II competency in order to graduate from the ADN Program. In addition, the ADN student is required to take the proctored ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam at the end of the ADN curriculum and achieve a score at Level II competency or above in order to complete the ADN Program. If the student does not achieve a score of Level II or above on the ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam, the student will have to register for the National Council of State Boards NCLEX-RN Review ( Time and cost options for the National Council of State Boards RN Review for 3 weeks ($50), 5 weeks ($70), 8 weeks ($100) and 15 weeks ($160). Students will be required to bring in their scores on the NCLEX-RN Review tests before being allowed to take the ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Exam again.
