(3-0) (Online) COURSE DESCRIPTION: After a brief review of grammar, punctuation, word usage, and letter formats, the principles of letter writing will be presented. Attention is given to the various types of written business correspondence, interoffice communications, employment communications, and dictation techniques. PREREQUISITES: None COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will demonstrate the ability to: Produce business writing that is acceptable in appearance, placement, and context. Recognize and use the following basic letter types: A-plan - good news or neutral message B-plan - bad news or disappointing message C-plan - persuasive message Use the following business writing techniques: You attitude Direct beginning Buffer beginning Persuasive beginning Refusal by implication Relevant ending Attention-interest-desire/conviction-action plan for sales writing Subordination of negative materials Positive statement of negative materials Resale materials Sales promotion materials Principle of emphasis Use correct punctuation and grammar. Choose effective words in their writing. List the four elements of a buffer paragraph. List the four parts of the action ending. List the four elements of the persuasive message.

Preparation Procedures COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Completion of all unit assignments as indicated on the Blackboard site for this class, quizzes, midterm, and a comprehensive final examination are course requirements. In addition: English Competency Exam

3 3 All students must pass (70%) an objective-based exam covering five basic areas of language skills: 1. Capitalization and Punctuation 2. Agreement (subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent) and Correct Pronoun Case (subjective-objective) 3. Parallelism and Possessives 4. Correct Word Usage 5. Sentence Fragments and Paragraphs The grade on the English Competency Exam is not calculated in the student s final grade for the course; however, any student who does not successfully pass all parts of the exam will receive an incomplete grade (INC) for the course. An incomplete grade must be made up within one semester. This makeup will be scheduled with the instructor. If the exam is successfully completed within one semester, the course grade will be changed from an INC to whatever grade was earned in the class. Student Success Center. Tutors may be obtained through the Student Success Center. Contact the staff in C219 if this service is desired. John A. English Writing Center/Tutoring. For assistance with writing assignments in any college course, students are encouraged to visit The Write Place in Room E109. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping.

4 4 Ethical Expectations. As a student in my online class, I expect you to legally follow all requirements established by the College and ethically complete all class assignments and exams. This means that you personally complete all assignments yourself and adhere to ethical guidelines during exams. Failure to adhere to these guidelines could result in a failing grade for the assignment or exam. Please also refer to important information found in the Student Rights and Responsibilities established by John A. Logan College. METHOD OF EVALUATION: Students will have the opportunity to earn points as follows: Unit Reinforcement Pre-Test Assignments Point Value Unit 1 15 Unit 2 15 Unit 3 15 Unit 4 15 Unit 5 15 Unit 6 15 Unit 7 15 The unit reinforcement pre-test assignments are graded, untimed assignments completed and submitted through the Blackboard course site for this class. You must complete the assignment when you begin. Students are permitted to use their textbook and information available through the unit folders in the Blackboard course site during these assignments. Writing Assignments Assignment Assignment Assignment Please refer to the specific instructions for each 100-point assignment included in the Assignments link of the unit folders in the Blackboard course site. Each assignment will also include a grading/point checklist to be used by the instructor when evaluating the writing assignments. Specific due dates for each assignment can be found in the assignment/quiz/exam schedule in the Blackboard course site. Any assignment turned in past the due date will be penalized 10 points. Please refer to each individual assignment instruction for information on submitting the assignments.

Students will be permitted 30 minutes for each quiz. If this time is exceeded, the student will be penalized 5 points. Students are not permitted to refer to their textbook or class information during the quiz. Specific due dates for taking the quizzes are included in the assignment/quiz/exam schedule in the Blackboard course site. If a quiz is not taken on the dates indicated in this schedule, the student will receive a zero for the quiz. The instructor should be contacted regarding any extenuating circumstances preventing a student from taking quizzes on the specified dates. Exams Midterm Exam 100 Final Exam 150 Exams must be completed once a student clicks on the exam in the Blackboard site to begin. Students will be permitted one hour for the midterm and two hours for the final exam. If this time is exceeded, the student will be penalized 10 points. Students are not permitted to refer to their textbook or class information during the exams. Specific due dates for taking the exams are included in the assignment/quiz/exam schedule in the Blackboard course site. If the exam is not taken on the dates indicated in this schedule, the student will receive a zero for the exam. The instructor should be contacted regarding any extenuating circumstances preventing a student from taking the exam on the specified test dates. Passing the English Competency Exam at 70 percent or above is also a requirement for this class. The score earned on this exam is not calculated into the student s point total.
