This sectr is facing many cnstraints. At the same time, ppulatin grwth, urbanisatin and incme grwth in the regins lead t increased demand fr prducts f animal rigin. Prfessinals have t get a gd training t be able t address this challenge and have t be prepared with mdern tls and appraches t respnd t the needs f rural cmmunities and cnsumers. 1

3 Objectives Overall bjective: Imprvement and harmnisatin f the higher educatin in the field f Animal Science at Masters level in 4 LA cuntries using internatinally recgnised standards. Specific bjectives: Refrm f Masters prgrams Animal Science at 4 Universities in three LA cuntries Design f new Masters prgrams Animal Science at 3 Universities in tw LA cuntries (Re-) training f administrative and academic staff Develpment f teaching methdlgy (inter-active learning tls) Develpment f jint curses Upgrading and mdernisatin f equipment Strengthen inter-institutinal cperatin at natinal and internatinal levels Refrm and Design f Masters prgrams 3

4 Refrm and Design I Autevaluatin reprt was prepared by each university based n standardized frmat Visits f a team, cnsisting f ne Eurpean and ne Latin American partner, t crss-check results and perfrm a SWOT-analysis were made External expert was invited t jin the cnsrtium meeting t give additinal input Labr market analysis was dne Based n these results Masters prgrams were designed All dcuments were again crss-checked by different partners f the cnsrtium Refrm and Design II Gaps in their pertinence t the rural realities. Mdificatins are needed t turn them int drivers f change in Research & Develpment. 5 Refrm and Design III In Blivia 2 new Masters prgrams will start early 2012 In Argentina 1 new Masters prgram will start in early 2012 In Mexic 2 Masters prgrams are up-dated and evaluated by CONACYT In Peru 2 Masters prgrams are up-dated and apprved by universities Training f staff I 3 didactic curses were ffered Planned: Training f 70 teachers (10 teachers/university) Realized: Training f 57 teachers (9 wmen) 2 prject management curses were ffered Planned: Training f 14 researchers Realized: Training f 18 researchers (3 wmen) 5

6 Training f staff II Internships fr IT-experts Planned: 14 persns trained Realized: 13 persns trained (1 wman) Internships f administrative staff in Spain and Austria Planned: 21 persns trained Realized: 28 persns trained (4 wmen) Internships fr teachers in Spain and Austria Planned: 42 teachers Realized: 40 teachers (7 wmen) Develpment f jint curses 2 Labratry curses n mlecular techniques were held. The curses were hsted by UNALM, jintly rganized with UMSA. Jint n-line curses are currently develped and will be ffered starting frm January 2012 nwards. The idea f a Campus virtual was develped by the cnsrtium. 6

7 Sustainability Memrandi f understanding were signed between different universities. Research prpsals were develped and sme prjects have already started Jint supervisin f students fr their Masters thesis Latin American scientists are invited t Eurpe as visting prfessrs Duble degree between URUZA, Mexic and UCO, Spain is planned Cnclusins Cperatin within ne cuntry, but als acrss cuntries in Latin America is still scarce. Universities are mre riented twards the USA and Eurpe. Missing funding schemes fr student mbility was identified as a majr cnstraint. A virtual campus ffering n-line curses was seen as a pssible slutin. 7
