1 Learning utcmes MSc in Civil Engineering (Cnstructin Management) MSc in Civil Engineering (Cycle 2, level 4) Specializatin: Cnstructin Management MSc in Civil Engineering with specializatin in Cnstructin Management is a 2 year fulltime graduate study prgram f 120 ECTS credits (4 semesters, 30 ECTS each semester). Students generally take 90 ECTS in specialized curses and a 30 ECTS thesis. In exceptinal cases they may take 60 ECTS in curses and a 60 ECTS thesis with a strnger research fcus. The aim f the prgram is t prepare students fr careers in the management f prjects r majr cmpnents f prjects, with emphasis n engineering slutins relevant t the cnstructin industry. There is emphasis n assimilating a brad scpe f diverse disciplines - i.e. cnstructin engineering, business, law, human relatins and management diciplines - thrugh interdisciplinary, practically riented prject wrk. An integrating prject cnnects learning in adjacent subject areas and prvides a practical cntext fr academic study, bridging the gap between thery and practice. There is a large cntributin t the prgram frm visiting prfessrs and invited lecturers wh are leading specialists in their respective fields. The research emphasis is n applied research in cperatin with the industry. The prgram leading t the MSc degree in Civil Engineering with specializatin in Cnstructin Management runs parallel t a prgram leading t a MSc degree in Cnstructin Management. Reykjavik University ffers MSc prgrams in fur different fields f specializatin within Civil Engineering: Cnstructin Management, Transprt and Urban Planning, Structural Design and Cncrete Technlgy. Emphasis is n interdisciplinary cperatin between these prgrams, where apprpriate. In the case f specializatin in Cnstructin Management, students are encuraged t take elective curses frm the Transprt and Urban Planning prgram. Admissin requirements are a BSc degree in engineering. Minimum requirements in applied sciences (i.e. mathematics, physics) and in basic subjects fundamental t civil engineering (i.e. mechanics, materials science) have t be fulfilled. After successful cmpletin f the prgram the student is awarded the degree Master f Science in Civil Engineering with specializatin in Cnstructin Management. The prgram is designed t meet the curriculum requirements fr the prfessinal title f Chartered Engineer (Icelandic: verkfræðingur), as defined by the Ministry f Industry and the Assciatin f Chartered Engineers in Iceland. On the cmpletin f the MSc prgram in additin t relevant undergraduate studies, the fllwing criteria shall be fulfilled, in additin t the criteria fulfilled at frmer levels. The student must cmbine brad knwledge with a deep understanding f the cre discipline f Cnstructin Management. A substantial part f the knwledge imparted t the student is transferable acrss many types f prjects, rganizatins and teams. The subjects in which students take curses are Strategic Prject Management, Scheduling, Prductin Engineering & Management, Risk Analysis & Management, Finance in Prjects; Cst Engineering & Management; Value Engineering & Management; Prcurement Methds; Cntractural & Tendering Law; Facilities Management; Supply Chain Management & Lgistics; Prcess Management; Organizatinal Psychlgy; Human Resurce Management; Decisin Analysis; Research Methds; as well as having the ptin f taking elective curses in ther engineering disciplines within the Schl f Science and Engineering, the Schl f Business r the Schl f Law. Knwledge f hw prjects arise and the different stages in the life-cycle f a prject. Knwledge f the main methlgies and tls used t gather, analyze and interpret data. Wrking knwledge f a range f mdern mathematical methds and tls used in the develpment and analysis f engineering systems generally and cnstructin prjects specifically. Knwledge f the main methdlgies and tls used t frmulate and analyze design slutins in varius engineering cntexts, especially in civil and cnstructin engineering. Understanding and knwledge f basic research and develpment principles and practices relevant t engineering generally and the cnstructin industry specifically. Understanding f the rle f the engineer as an imprtant prfessinal in sciety and the duties, respnsibilities, prfessinal and ethical rle and liabilities f experts such as civil engineers, cnstructin managers, architects and ther parties in a cnstructin prject. Use mathematical mdels and their assciated analysis techniques in the design and evaluatin f slutins. Plan, manage, analyze and deply cnstructin prjects, als large and cmplicated cnstructin prjects, using recgnized cnventins as well as current best-practice methds. Plan a prject in regard t cnstructin methd, resurce and time cnstraints. Analyse a prject using the wrk breakdwn structure (WBS) and the prduct breakdwn structure (PBS). Apply the critical path methd t prjects and the line f balance methd t repetitive wrk. Perfrm a time-cst-perfrmance- trade-ff. Plan the setting up f site peratins fr a range f prject types and plan n-site prductin in accrdance with the cntract and quality plan. Plan the n-site and ff-site lgistical supprt needed fr a cnstructin prject. Prepare a prject executin plan (PEP) fr a range f prject types. Determine apprpriate levels f manpwer and supervisry staff fr a given prject. Undertake a risk and hazard assessment and take steps t mitigate identified risks. Set the agenda fr teamwrk, wrk effectively in a team and prvide leadership fr a team f individuals in the practice f cnstructin Plan the wrk in advance, estimate required resurces and cmply with prject deadlines. Wrk cllabratively with ther disciplines in the spirit f teamwrk, having regard fr their needs and relatinship with ne s wn wrk. Adapt quickly t new prblems and challenges arising in the cntext f cnstructin prjects. Use advanced engineering sftware in the planning, managing and analysis f prjects. Prpse, plan, structure and manage well defined research prjects invlving a team f individuals. Priritise, rganise and schedule wrk activities effectively. Undertake research and the develpment f new methds within the brad field f cnstructin management, recgnising their rles in the innvatin prcess. Interpret and critically assess existing theries, mdels, methds and results, bth qualitatively and quantitatively, within a brad engineering framewrk and specifically within the field f civil engineering and cnstructin. Recgnize and appreciate prblems inherent in a given engineering system r apprach, and be able t synthesise, and prpse evaluatin methds r develp alternative slutin strategies. Independent learning and thught is encuraged and the student is required t apply himself in an envirnment that is multidisciplinary and ever-changing. A research apprach is needed in mst assignments, necessitating independent enquiry and adherence t ethical wrk practices. Apply standard scientific principles and theries t develp engineering slutins t a range f practical prblems. COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND INFORMATION LITERACY On cmpletin f the MSc prgram, the student shuld be able t: Wrk as a part f an inter-diciplinary planning, design r research team. Cmmunicate effectively and prfessinally and frmulate sund arguments, bth in writing and by means f presentatins, using apprpriate technical language.
