1 Cnnecting t the Internet via a Mbile Packet Data service terminal Setting up a mdem device The PC cmmunicates with the MPDS terminal as if it were a mdem. Fllw the steps belw t set-up a mdem device under that will cmmunicate with the Inmarsat terminal. 1. Cnnect ne end f a serial cable int yur PCs COM prt. Cnnect the ther end int the scket marked 'MPDS' n the terminal. If the Cntrl Panel windw is nt already pen; frm the Start menu, select the ptin Settings->Cntrl Panel. The cntrl panel windw will appear. Duble click n the Phne And Mdem Optins icn. 2. In the "Mdems" tab, click <Add>. 3. When asked whether t allw Windws t detect the mdem, tick the "Dn t detect my mdem; I will select it frm a list" bx, t stp Windws detecting the mdem autmatically. Then click <Next>. 1 f 8

2 4. Under "Manufacturer" chse "(Standard Mdem Types)". Under "Mdels" chse "Standard bps Mdem" and click <Next>. 5. Under "On which prts..." chse "COM1" r the prt t which the Inmarsat terminal is cnnected, if different. Click <Next>. 6. Windws shuld reprt, "Yur mdem has been set-up successfully". 7. Click <Finish>, yu will then be returned t the "Phne and Mdem ptins" panel. Select the newly added mdem frm the list and click <Prperties>. 2 f 8

3 8. Select the "Mdem" tab and set the Maximum Prt Speed t "115200" using the drp dwn bx. 9. Select the "Advanced". In the "Extra initialisatins cmmands" bx enter the string in upper case "AT+WS45=4;+WLES=XXX" where XXX is the LESO cde as issued by yur service prvider. Clse the prperties bx by clicking <OK> twice Clse the Cntrl Panel windw by selecting the "Clse" ptin frm the "File" menu. Setting up a Netwrking Prfile T successfully cnnect t the Internet via an MPDS capable terminal, fllw these steps: 10. Frm the "Start" menu, select "Settings->Netwrk Cnnectins". Select "New Cnnectin Wizard". 3 f 8

4 11. Select "Set up my cnnectin manually" and click <Next>. 12. When asked "Hw d yu want t cnnect t the Internet?", select "Cnnect using a dial-up mdem" and click <Next>. 13. When asked "Hw d yu want t cnnect t the Internet?", select "Cnnect using a dial-up mdem" and click <Next>. 14. Select the mdem that yu created in the previus sectin: "Standard 33600bps Mdem". Un-tick all thers mdems, then click <Next>. 4 f 8

5 15. Enter a cnnectin name in the "ISP Name" bx and click <Next>. 16. Enter "123" in the "Phne number" and bx click <Next>. 17. Enter the User name and Passwrd fr the MPDS LESO yu are using. These details can be btained frm yur LESO. Un-tick all ther ptins and click <Next>. 5 f 8

6 18. Tick the "Add a shrtcut t this cnnectin t my desktp" if required and click <Finish>. 19. The "Cnnect MPDS" bx will pen, click <Prperties>. 20. In the "General" tab un-tick "All devices call the same numbers" and "Use dialling rules" tick "Shw icn in ntificatin area when cnnected". Select the "Netwrking" tab make sure the "Type f Dial up server I am calling" is set t "PPP Windws95/ 98/NT4/2000, Internet" and tick "Internet Prtcl (TCP/IP)" and "QS Packet Scheduler". 6 f 8

7 21. Select "Internet Prtcl (TCP/IP)" and click <Prperties>. 22. In the "General" tab ensure "Obtain an IP Address autmatically" and "Use the fllwing DNS server addresses" are selected. Enter the "DNS Addresses" as supplied by yur LESO. Click <OK> twice t get back t the "Cnnect.." bx. 23. Click <Dial> t cnnect t MPDS. 7 f 8

8 Optimising the cnnectin During an MPDS cnnectin, yu are nly charged fr data that is sent and received. Therefre, it des nt matter hw lng yu are cnnected, but nly hw much data yu send and receive. Keeping this t a minimum is essential t keeping csts dwn. Available Upgrades Service Pack 1 Careful sftware cnfiguratin Every package yu use t send and receive data (r t create data) can benefit frm careful cnfiguratin t ensure less data is sent and received. Cnsider the fllwing: Chse data frmats carefully; many desktp applicatins create large utput files. Can anther, simpler, frmat be used? Cmpress data; Zip all dcuments/files that are t be sent and received. G thrugh applicatin cnfiguratins checking that extra data is nt sent and received. Fr example, applicatins d nt need t add signatures, r send delivery reprts. Check that all unnecessary netwrk applicatins are stpped when nt in use. Fr example, new 'ticker tape', instant messaging and even applicatins can generate unwanted traffic. Mnitring traffic If yu are aware f the traffic being sent and received by yur PC, yu can see which applicatins are generating the mst traffic, and which are generating ttally unwanted traffic. Even if yu cannt fix the prblem yurself, it can be brught t the attentin f yur IT department, yu may be able t better cnfigure an applicatin, r change the way in which it perates. A simple way f mnitring yur cnnectin is t check the bytes sent and received after each cnnectin using the dial-up netwrking statistics available in the prperties f the system tray icn whilst yu are cnnected.
