2 ABOUT THE AREA Growth in both the energy and retail trade sectors has accelerated in the northern Ohio Valley, making the region an extremely attractive place to do business - and to pursue a career and raise a family. Challenges such as those facing many areas are present, but are outweighed by new opportunities in our region (Brooke, Hancock, Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel and Tyler counties of West Virginia and Belmont, Jefferson, Harrison and Monroe counties of Ohio). During the past year, the unemployment rate in the two local Metropolitan Statistical Areas monitored by the Bureau of Labor Statistics has dropped dramatically. According to the BLS, the number of unemployed people in the two MSAs has plunged by more than 1,600 during the past year. Much of the economic focus has been on the energy industry, where expansion has been by leaps and bounds. Among accomplishments during the past year have been announcement of a new power plant in Marshall County, and construction of new natural gas processing facilities throughout our 10-county area. A vote of confidence in the coal industry s future came when Murray Energy purchased Northern Panhandle mines formerly owned by Consol Energy. What continues to happen behind the scenes in energy already has been a boon for many area residents. Thousands have signed mineral rights leases for gas under their property, pumping millions of dollars into the economy. Part of the local economy s foundation, retailing, also grew. Several new businesses opened at The Highlands retail center in Ohio County. In Belmont County, the Ohio Valley Mall welcomed a major new firm, Boscov s department stores. Late in the year, more growth in the business service sector occurred when Williams Lea, which handles various document processing tasks for businesses, announced plans to hire 100 new workers at its Wheeling office. One factor making the area attractive for business and industry is our location. The northern Ohio Valley is served by Interstate 70, putting us within a day s driving distance for most of the nation s population. A good rail network and the Ohio River also are part of our transportation network. According to the Census Bureau, the region has 323,155 residents in 135,810 households. A total of 22,167 businesses, including small enterprises operated by individuals, serve the local economy. Among the region s strengths are education, with excellent public and private schools sometimes honored at the national level. Several colleges and universities serve the area. Health care is another highlight, with several excellent - also nationally recognized for some services - hospitals in the area. Tourism, driven primarily by Oglebay Park in Wheeling, is important to the economy. Retail outlets such as The Highlands, featuring a large Cabela s store and distribution center, draw thousands of visitors each week. State and local parks, as well as historical attractions such as West Virginia Independence Hall in Wheeling, also bring people to the area. For generations, as high quality of life has been attractive to nearly a third of a million local residents. With the economy trending steadily upward, the region offers excellent marketing opportunities. 2

On Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays one paper is published for the entire circulation and an insertion counts as one day. POLICY: Publisher reserves the right to classify, edit, reject, or cancel any or all copy at any time, and to omit all late copy when not submitted in time to conform with deadlines. It is understood that the mere taking of an ad order by a clerk or other newspaper personnel does not constitute acceptance of the material for publication. Rates may be revised on thirty days written notice to contract advertisers. Ads in regular Classifications may not break columns. Logos are permitted to run in column and must occupy at least one-half inch of space. ALL ADVERTISING shall be truthful without creating a misleading impression, in compliance with local, state, and federal laws; not derogatory or detrimental to any individual, group, or business. Advertisements by dealers and businesses shall advertise only the specific business and shall not disguise themselves as individuals. The advertiser and/or advertising agency agrees to defend and indemnify the publisher against any and all liability, loss or expenses arising form claims of libel, unfair competition, unfair trade practices, infringement of trademarks, copyrights, trade names, patents or proprietary rights or violation of rights of privacy resulting from the publication of the advertiser s advertisements. CREDIT: Advertising is sold for cash in advance unless arrangements for credit have been made with the business office. ADS, CANCELLATIONS and/or CORRECTIONS accepted during regular business hours. DEADLINES: All classified ads start in The Intelligencer, Monday through Saturday or the Sunday News-Register. MEASUREMENT: No classified advertising accepted less than 3 lines. Display style advertisement containing capital letter lines and white spaces will be computed on the basis of 12 lines to the inch. Minimum space not less than one (1) inch. Where depth of an advertisement is over 19 inches, a charge will be made for the full depth (21 inches). Ads must be as many inches deep as columns wide except 8 columns and 4 column ads. 8 column ads may be a minimum of 3 inches in depth. No advertisement will be run upside down. BOX NUMBERS: We charge $16.00 for replies to be mailed. ERRORS: Notify us of any error in your ad.
