2 Intent and Overview More efficient detection and treatment of ophthalmic conditions and diseases are constantly being discovered and acted upon. This program is based upon the need to apprise local physicians of the treatments and diagnostic modalities being utilized at teaching centers across the country. Meeting Objectives At the conclusion of this meeting, participants should be able to: Provide a summary of the incidence and prevalence of astigmatism and presbyopia Describe the current and near term corneal and lens based surgical alternatives for the treatment of astigmatism and presbyopia Outline the education for patients regarding potential benefits of laser assisted refractive corneal surgery and laser assisted refractive cataract surgery in the treatment of astigmatism and presbyopia Integrate findings from clinical trials into the management of macular edema while understanding the limitations of existing information and recognize that different etiologies and patterns of macular edema exist Identify conditions which may benefit from retinal surgery but understand how and when surgical intervention is indicated and explain how evolving techniques in VR surgery reduce morbidity and complications Appreciate novel and emerging strategies for treatment of retinal disease and be able to discuss with patients the status of research on blinding retinal diseases and outline what questions, studies and data is needed to bring new treatments from bench top to bedside Describe the various situations where premium lenses are needed in the treatment of Glaucoma, list the various kinds of lenses and what conditions each is used to treat Provide a picture of Angle Closure Glaucoma and why surgery is needed to treat the condition; the procedures used to open angles indirectly and in what situations may you need to force the angle Glaucoma surgery has progressed over the years from manual surgery to current procedures but treatments continue to evolve with the investigation of various procedures and new medications being investigated internationally 2012 PRESENTERS THORPE LECTURER RICHARD L.
