2 Your Presenter: Dr. James W. Partington, PhD, BCBA-D is the director of Behavior Analysts, Inc. in Walnut Creek, California and Honolulu, Hawaii, and provides services to children and their families. He is a licensed psychologist and Board Certified Behavior Analyst and has 40 years experience working with children with developmental disabilities. He is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of behavior analysis with expertise in language-based interventions. He is the co-author of Teaching Language to Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities and author of The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills - Revised (ABLLS-R ) as well as Capturing the Motivation of Children with Autism and Web-ABLLS. He is known for his work in teaching parents and professionals about practical, evidence-based procedures necessary for effective educational interventions. He has been a faculty member of several universities including West Virginia University, University of San Francisco and St. Mary s College. Dr. Partington is a former President of the Northern California Association for Behavior Analysis and has served as a member of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. He has also produced several instructional DVDs related to effective treatment for children with autism. His workshops are based on research and findings within the field of applied behavior analysis, utilizing the conceptual framework of verbal behavior as developed by BF Skinner in Parents, families, early intervention programs, preschool programs and school districts benefit from his trainings across the country and abroad. About the Program Development and NET Workshop: Many instructional programs for children with a diagnosis of autism fail to devote sufficient instructional time on those skills that will result in the greatest overall rate of skill acquisition. In order to facilitate the rapid acquisition of critical language and learning skills it is important that both the selection of specific learning objectives and the teaching activities be prioritized. It is important to learn how to teach a variety of language skills during the routine of daily activities. By teaching language skills in the child s natural environment, the skills are immediately useful for the child and they are more likely to remember the skills used on an ongoing basis. Intervention strategies should focus on the skills that make it possible for the learner to acquire a broad range of skills from a variety of skill repertoires. This workshop is designed for parents, educators and program administrators who wish to further develop their skills in determining learning priorities and establishing a comprehensive set of educational objectives for students both in sessions and during daily activities. Specific techniques used to develop effective programs in both the home and school settings will be presented for individuals at both the early learner and more advanced student levels. Videotapes demonstrating intervention strategies in the home setting will be shown to demonstrate specific methodology for developing and maintaining the child s participation in language development activities. Data regarding developmental norms for typically developing children for several critical repertoires will also be reviewed. Participants are encouraged to bring their copy of the ABLLS-R with them to the training. Program Development and NET Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1. Identify strategies for helping parents and educators prioritize the learning outcomes based upon a student s current set of skills. 2. Identify how basic language skills can be taught to children with autism within the context of on-going daily activities. 3. Compare the existing skill levels of a child with an autism spectrum disorder with the age-equivalent skills of typically developing children. 4. Review an ABLLS-R protocol for a nonverbal individual and select learning objectives that will help develop the skills necessary to develop instructional control and establish an initial verbal repertoire.
3 5. Review an ABLLS-R protocol for individual who has acquired a set of basic mand, tact, and intraverbal skills and select learning objectives that will teach more advanced skills in these repertoires and incorporate the use of these skills into a variety of everyday social interactions. 6. Describe several examples as to how parents and professionals can motivate children during language instruction. 7. Identify how to sequence daily events such that the student s participation in targeted language activities results in reinforcers that are typically delivered non-contingently. About the AFLS Workshop: The AFLS introductory workshop will provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools to analyze and track a learner s functional living skills and develop an individualized intervention program to help a learner become less dependent upon assistance from others. Individuals of all ages need to learn many critical functional living skills in order to successfully participate in a wide range of home, school and community-based activities. The Assessment of Functional Living Skills (The AFLS ) reviews over 1000 skills in 32 functional areas such as traveling in the community, making purchases, seeking assistance as required, preparing meals, helping with household chores, and participating in social and leisure activities. Participants will learn how to conduct an AFLS assessment and transfer the results to the skills tracking grids. An emphasis will be placed on helping parents, other caregivers, and educators identify and prioritize functional skills that their learner needs to develop. Additionally, practical and easy to implement methods will be discussed to help learners develop these skills without taking more time than is currently required to perform these tasks. By identifying and prioritizing some learning targets for daily activities, a quick and significant impact on an individual s ability to independently perform specific skills can be made. A major emphasis will be placed on learning how to break down tasks into easy-to-teach steps (task analysis). Participants will learn strategies to support and enhance the learner s motivation to participate in the tasks. Additionally, methods for using and then fading prompts as those skills are learned will be demonstrated. A review of videos showing parents teaching various functional living skills to their children in the home and community will also be provided. AFLS Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1. Identify the differences between functional and basic/conceptual skills 2. Identify 4 broad clusters of functional skills 3. Identify at least 32 specific skill repertoire areas of functional skills 4. Identify safety precautions that must be implemented when assessing a learner s functional skills 5. Score the AFLS, complete the tracking grids for learners and update an existing assessment 6. Conduct a task analysis of functional and common daily activities 7. Select and prioritize targets to include in a learner s functional skills intervention program
