In the career game of life, those who take the initiative to learn and grow find themselves in a much better position for victory. This is especially true for HR professionals who invest in the pursuit, acquisition and preservation of HR certification credentials. The highly coveted certifications offered through the HR Certification Institute ( are internationally recognized and respected. Certified HR professionals are sought out by winning teams to play key positions. Savvy business leaders understand that certified HR professionals demonstrate a clear commitment to remaining current in their field. They appreciate and value the knowledge and expertise they bring to their organizations that enables them to score human resources home runs. As an HR practitioner you need not practice for the career game of life all alone! 2 2 HR ACADEMY coming to The Doubletree Seattle Airport, early November Specific dates and registration info available at Mid-May. This program is approved for 19.5 HRCI General Recertification credits. Rates for this 3-day conference (best value for the credit): SHRM Member $500 Non-Member $690 (includes 1-year SHRM membership based on application acceptance) This NHRMA seminar is designed to provide practical knowledge of the basic functions of the HR department. Key areas of the HRM function will be presented and discussed by highly qualified professionals with records of proven success in their fields. Seminar participants newly assigned to the HRM function will gain insight and a practical understanding about the complex field of HR management and administration. Experienced HRM professionals will find challenging opportunities to update their knowledge of the profession. Who Should Attend HRM generalists newly assigned to the field. Specialists who seek to broaden their knowledge of the HRM function. Experienced practitioners desiring to update their professional HRM knowledge. Volunteers Needed! NHRMA is currently seeking two volunteer leaders to join our 2013 Board of Directors. These appointed positions require dedicated volunteers who are SHRM members in good standing in AK, OR, or WA for their entire term of office and must be able to attend all Board of Director meetings and the annual NHRMA conference. A brief description of the positions can be found below. For more information please contact Laurie Roe, NRHMA President nhrma2013@gmail.com Special Projects Director This relatively new position is responsible for the successful outcome of special projects assigned by the board. The successful volunteer will have effective research and organizational skills coupled with the ability to document and implement a proposed course of action. Projects will vary in nature and need. Samples of past projects include collecting and archiving NHRMA historical documents and researching and putting into place a shared document solution (Google Docs). Professional Development Director This position is responsible for the successful and profitable execution of the HR Academy professional development program (formerly known as HR Foundations). The HR Academy typically runs for three days and is coordinated for delivery once annually in Oregon and Washington and every other year in Alaska. HR Certification Institute certification (PHR, SPHR, GPHR) required. The successful volunteer will have effective event coordination and management skills including networking, marketing, logistics and negotiation. NHRMA conducts activities to advance the HR profession, recognize outstanding achievement of HR professionals, and provide support for SHRM, State Councils, Local Chapters, Students, and SHRM Members.

3 3 Awards & Recogntion: Deadlines Quickly Approaching! Each year NHRMA honors Human Resources professionals, students and SHRM chapters with four awards and is now accepting nominations. Detailed nomination criteria for each award can be found on the NHRMA web site. The Distinguished Member Award recognizes professional members who have made significant contributions to the HR profession. The winning nominee will receive a $100 donation to the SHRM Foundation in their name; FREE registration to a NHRMA Conference in Tacoma, Washington; a commemorative engraved plaque; a NHRMA Distinguished Member Pin; and formal recognition at the 2013 NHRMA Conference. Nominations DUE May 15, The Robert W. Denomy Award recognizes an outstanding undergraduate student who has performed outstanding service to the HR profession and to the Association. The winning nominee will receive a monetary award of $1,000; FREE registration to the 2013 NHRMA Conference in Tacoma, Washington; reimbursement for travel and lodging to attend the conference; a commemorative engraved plaque; and formal recognition at the 2013 NHRMA Conference. Their sponsoring faculty advisor will also receive a commemorative engraved plaque and recognition at the 2013 NHRMA Conference. Nominations DUE May 15, The Sharon Koss Graduate Award recognizes an outstanding graduate student who has performed outstanding service to the HR profession and to the Association. The winning nominee will receive a monetary award of $1,000; FREE registration to the 2013 NHRMA Conference in Tacoma, Washington; reimbursement for travel and lodging to attend the conference; a commemorative engraved plaque; and formal recognition at the 2013 NHRMA Conference. Their sponsoring faculty advisor will also receive a commemorative engraved plaque and recognition at the 2013 NHRMA Conference. Nominations DUE May 15, The Randy Lundberg Northern Lights Award recognizes a SHRM chapter for outstanding achievement and excellence in overall chapter operations. The winning nominee will receive a $1,000 Chapter Grant, a commemorative engraved plaque, and formal recognition at the 2013 NRHMA Conference in Tacoma, Washington. College Relations Update NHRMA s 32nd Annual Student Conference was on Friday, April 19th and Saturday, April 20th. Sixty students joined us from all over Oregon and Washington from colleges such as the Lake Washington Institute of Technology, Western Washington University, Central Washington University, University of Washington, Portland State University and University of Oregon. The conference was hosted by Lake Washington Institute of Technology at their Redmond, WA campus, and this year s theme was Opening Doors. Friday s focus was the Case Competition. In this competition, student teams of four receive a real world HR case and have four hours to prepare a presentation and paper on their recommendations to resolve the HR problems in the case. They then present to a panel of judges who score them based on their recommended solutions. A second panel of judges scores their written reports. The winning team receives an all-expense paid trip to SHRM s annual conference, which this year will be held in Chicago. Friday evening was closed out with a taco bar and casino night, to unwind from all that stress! On Saturday, students got to hear a fantastic lineup of speakers, including dynamic HR professionals and entrepreneurs on a wide variety of topics including the state of the union in HR, marketing your skills within your company and becoming more visible and controlling your brand on the web. With Saturday also came the announcement of the case competition results, with University of Washington taking second place and first going to Portland State University. PSU team members Chris Kachic, Reshell Smith, Dena Nguyen and Dena Barnum, along with Chapter Advisor Alan Cabelly, will be attending the national SHRM conference in June, compliments of NHRMA. Congratulations to PSU and a huge thank you to the conference committee and LWIT for hosting, we look forward to next year!

5 5 SHRM State Council News Alaska State Council Alaska goes Platinum! Yes! For the first time ever, the Alaska SHRM State Council has obtained SHRM s 2012 Platinum SHAPE Award! This award recognizes outstanding achievements in state operations and a commitment to providing meaningful programs and services. It also is recognition of our continued growth and development as business leaders, capable of developing strategies that lead to business success! By achieving this award, Alaska distinguishes itself as an outstanding organization dedicated to serving the needs and the advancement of the human resource management profession. Although we are basking in that recognition for 2012, we are also halfway to reaching our initiatives for 2013! We taught the Jr. Achievement Skills for Success program at Central Middle School in Anchorage. This is a sample of the comments we got from the 8th graders: This week I learned about team work and verbal as well as nonverbal communication. I learned how to appear and act at a job interview Cooperation is good, listen to everybody. Find solution. I learned teamwork and communications is a key part of life. This week I learned what qualities people are looking for in a worker. I learned what to put on your resume and what not to do at an interview. I learned how to cooperate. To be courteous and friendly, show respect for other s ideas, opinions and contributions. Also how to resolve conflict and negotiate. Jr. Achievement Skills for Success Our webinar series is now in its third year and we have already held 3 programs this year, with 3 more coming up in the fall. All our programs are pre-approved for HRCI credit and are complimentary. We invite our fellow NHRMA colleagues to please join us for the next ones. May 3rd, we will be hosted by the Rogue Valley Chapter in Medford. Melissa Vigil, Professional Development and HRCI Director has lined up a great program for the meeting. 6 6 Washington State Council Washington is ready for summer! This last quarter saw several educational opportunities for our SHRM members. We had another successful Washington State Council Employment Law and Legislative conference, our first Global Conference, and our Annual HR Day on the Hill. We continue the year with free monthly Global seminars for those seeking GPHR credits or an insight to global HR. All are welcome to participate! Contact Carol Olsby, SHRM WSC Global Director.
