3 Recertification = Beyond the Certification Recertification is about growing and strengthening your HR skills. By taking on projects or participating in activities that offer new experiences, you can stretch your comfort zone and develop new knowledge. Tayari Shaw, PHR, did just that as an HR business leader for the Kraft Lowville, NY, facility. Shaw witnessed the success the Lowville facility achieved from implementing Lean Six Sigma (L6S) within its manufacturing process and saw a great opportunity for applying the same processes within the facility s HR department. After extensive and intense training, along with addressing how the company could use L6S to solve specific HR challenges, she earned her L6G certification. In addition, Shaw proved to her leadership team that she was a true business partner and developed the ability to look at problem solving through a completely different lens. She submitted the experience for recertification credit, but gained much more. She learned, You can do and you can achieve anything. If you can commit yourself to it, you can do it. Shaw s peers and leaders learned this about her as well.

4 Recertification = Commitment and Experience Extend your Certification through Recertification Recertification is the process of renewing one s certification. To maintain certification, you must be prepared to continue to learn, grow and increase your current knowledge. To recertify your hard earned certification, each certified HR professional has three years to earn 60 credit hours by participating in activities, such as attending conference sessions, writing articles for publication and participating in new on-the-job-projects that align to the bodies of knowledge, among other activities. You may also choose to recertify your credentials by retaking the exam that pertains to your current certification. Recertification begins the minute you become certified. Begin charting your plan for maintaining your credentials today. Benefits of Recertification With recertification, you are demonstrating your commitment to staying current in the field of HR. By remaining active in HR, you are validating your knowledge and experience and showing that your skills are current and relevant in an ever-changing environment. Recertification says you are building upon your knowledge, growing as a professional and increasing your experience daily. 5 Certification Cycle Your certification cycle is the three-year period allotted to earn the 60 recertification credit hours needed to maintain your certification. It begins the day you pass your certification exam (recertification start date) and ends in the third year on the last day of the month you became certified. This date is referred to as your recertification end date. For example, if you pass your PHR exam on June 1, 2013, your recertification cycle would be as follows: Certification Cycle: June 1, 2013 June 30, 2016 Recertification Start Date June 1, 2013 All credits must have been earned during this time frame Recertification End Date June 30, 2016 I am proud of my certifications and as a life-long learner I will continue to recertify them through the remainder of my career. 6 Options for Recertification Re-Examination You may choose to recertify your credentials by retaking the certification exam. If you choose to do so at the time you apply for recertification, you will need to meet the current eligibility requirements. Also, keep in mind that the current exam application policies, procedures and fees apply. Recertification through re-examination includes: >> Waiting for a period of 12 months from your certification start date to apply for the exam >> Applying for the same certification exam as your current certification >> Taking the exam before your recertification end date 6 HR CERTIFICATION INSTITUTE I hrci.org

7 Professional Development The other option for recertifying your credentials is to participate in professional development activities. These are activities that increase your HR knowledge and aid in developing you as an HR professional. We award recertification credit hours based on activity type and the number of hours you participated in them. There are six different activity categories in which you can earn recertification credit hours. To ensure that the activity you are engaged in is eligible for recertification credit, make certain it aligns to the Body of Knowledge. Review each category in the Recertification Policies and Procedures Handbook or your Online Profile. Also, be aware that each category has a maximum number of recertification credits that can be earned within it. Recertification Categories Activity Examples Recertification Credit Hours Continuing Education Concurrent Sessions, seminars, No maximum HR courses, webcasts* and e-learning courses Instruction Presentation of HR-related subject, 20 hours maximum instructor of HR course, conference session presenter On-the-Job Experience New work projects. Examples include: 20 hours maximum Research and design new benefit plan or implement new diversity program Research/Publishing Articles published in journal or periodical, 20 hours maximum co-authored or edited work, writing a series of blog posts for a public audience Leadership Volunteer commitments: Chairing a 10 hours maximum committee, mentoring, holding a board position Professional Membership Being a member of a 10 hours maximum national/international HR-related professional association *There is a 20-hour limit on passive activities or activities with limited participant engagement, such as webcasts. hrci.org I HR CERTIFICATION INSTITUTE 7

8 EXCLUSIVE RESOURCES OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPANDING CONNECTIONS Knowledge community by, of and for Certified HR Professionals HR-related and Body of Knowledge Activities that are eligible for recertification credit are ones that are considered HR-related or can be tied to the Body of Knowledge for your current certification and increase or strengthen your HR knowledge through engagement in the activity. Use the content areas within the HR Body of Knowledge to assist you in determining which activities to participate in to earn recertification credit hours. Also, review your exam score report. The report details your score in each content area of your certification s Body of Knowledge. Those content areas in which your score could use improvement are opportunities for development and can be used as a guide for where you should focus your recertification efforts. 9 Specified Credits If you hold a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR ), Human Resource Management Professional (HRMP SM ) Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR ) or a California certification (PHR-CA or SPHR-CA ), you are required to earn 15 of the 60 required recertification credit hours in activities that are specific to your credential. Credits do not have to be specific to an area of HR. SPHR Business An activity that can 60 15* Management be tied directly to & Strategy THE strategic business management section of the PHR and SPHR body of knowledge. HRMP Business An activity that can 60 15* Management be tied directly to the & Strategy HR as a business leader section of the HRMP body of knowledge. GPHR International HR An activity that is 60 15* Management specific to global/international practices. PHR-CA California An activity that is 60 15* or SPHR-CA specific to California HR practices. *Of the 60 general recertification credit hours, 15 need to pertain to activities that are related to that specific certification. Business Management & Strategy: Activity focuses on how to align human capital activities with an organization s business plan or how HR professionals can learn more about the business operations in which they work for to better contribute to organizational success. International HR Management: Activity focuses on cross-border or global HR functions. 10 How to Recertify You may apply for recertification one year after your recertification start date and before your recertification deadline and once you have earned the 60 recertification credit hours required for your recertification. We suggest using your Online Profile as a filing system. As you engage in new activities and earn recertification credit hours, record them in your Online Profile. This helps eliminate having to remember every activity you participated in throughout your three-year certification cycle. Once you are logged into your Online Profile, fill in the form fields to enter a new activity. For assistance, please review our Recertification Virtual Tour (need short url). This tour will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to record and submit your recertification credits online. Special note to our certificants: Be sure to keep your contact information up to date in your Online Profile. As a courtesy, we send reminders on your recertification status via mail and . 11 Get Recertified Finding Recertification Credits Pre-Approved Program The HR Certification Institute offers a Pre-Approval Program to organizations that offer HR programs or educational events. These organizations can submit activities in advance of the host dates to be pre-approved for a certain number of credits and credit type. This takes the guesswork out of the process for our certificants, who can determine in advance how many, and what type of, credits can be earned from participating. Find our Pre- Approved Providers in our searchable directory at When you attend a pre-approved activity, you will be issued a program ID number to use when recording the activity in your Online Profile. Please Note: Activities do not have to be pre-approved to qualify for recertification credit hours. As long as the activity is HR related and can be tied to the body of knowledge that applies to your certification, it is eligible for credit. Additional Ways to Find Credits Many HR membership organizations offer a variety of professional development for members and non-members. Research these organizations and their many offerings to earn the credits you need. Local colleges and universities are another avenue for professional growth, especially those with an HR program. Online media and programs can offer a way to achieve recertification for those whose schedules are busy. This includes online classes, e-learning courses and webcasts. In addition, creating HR-related content is another recertification opportunity. Writing a blog on an HR topic or issue that required research is eligible for credit hours. You will want to review the Research and Publishing section in the Recertification Handbook to learn about the writing and publishing activities, such as articles and books that are eligible for recertification credit. hrci.org I HR CERTIFICATION INSTITUTE 11

12 Share your HR knowledge with others. Participate in a mentor program, volunteer with a group in need of your HR expertise, teach an HR course or join one of our exam development panels. All of these opportunities can lead to recertification credit. Don t discredit what you do at work. Any new project that you work on for the first time that leads to increased HR knowledge is an activity that can be used to earn recertification credit. Credit is also given for any on-the-job or in-house HR training you have taken for the first time. In the Recertification Handbook, review the Recertification Categories section very carefully to learn more about all the ways you can gain the 60 credit hours you need to recertify. Low-Cost ways to earn your recertification credit hours Earning recertification credit hours does not have to be costly or take you far from your work or home. In fact, you more than likely are doing the activities through your daily work responsibilities and other professional tasks that could count for recertification credit! Examples of low-cost recertification activities As long as you are able to relate the activity back to the subject areas covered on your certification, it can be counted for recertification credits. Ten (10) recertification credit hours can be earned by each of these activities: >> Being a national member of SHRM or another national HR association (Professional Membership category). >> Mentoring an HR professional or HR student through a formal mentoring program (HR Leadership Roles category). >> Holding a volunteer HR position for a professional organization (HR Leadership Roles category). Twenty (20 recertification credit hours can be earned by each of these activities*: >> Creating an HR budget (On-the-Job category). >> Developing an employee handbook (On-the- Job category). >> Teaching a sexual harassment prevention workshop (Instruction category). >> Leading a performance management seminar (Instruction category). *Only first-time activities are counted for recertification credits. 13 Recertification Workflow STEP 1 >> Recertification begins as soon as you become certified As soon as you earn your new credential, it is time to start planning for maintaining your certification. STEP 2 >> Know your recertification end date This is one date that is worth remembering. Know the deadline date for submitting your 60 recertification credits. This can be found in your Online Profile or on your certificate. STEP 3 >> Keep your Recertification Tool Kit handy Your Recertification Tool Kit provides easy access to all the recertification information and resources we have available to you keep it close by! STEP 4 >> Read the Recertification Handbook Become familiar with the recertification policies and procedures early on within your recertification cycle. Knowing how and when to recertify will help you in charting your recertification plan. STEP 7 >> Become familiar with your Online Profile Be sure to keep your 12-digit user ID # and password handy. Login from time to time to familiarize yourself with how to enter your recertification activities into your Online Profile. Take our Recertification Virtual tour, which will give you a step-by-step guide for how to enter your activities. STEP 10 >> Get your questions answered Join us for our Virtual Recertification Chats and webinars and visit the Recert Connection blog to talk directly with the HR Certification Institute recertification staff. Also, visit our web site for additional recertification resources. STEP 5 >> Review your score report Your score report highlights your strengths and where there is room for growth. We recommend that you use recertification as an opportunity to strengthen the core content areas in which you could add more experience and knowledge. STEP 8 >> Begin earning and documenting your recertification credits We recommend that you start earning recertification credits in the first year of your recertification cycle. As soon as you earn them, enter them into your Online Profile. This is your electronic filing system. Use it! STEP 11 >> Look for more recertification activities If you need more activities to complete your 60 credit hours, visit our Searchable Directory of Pre-Approved Activities, review our Low-Cost Flier to learn about activities you can engage in for little or no cost to you and look out for monthly recertification tips via , the Recert Connection blog and our web site. STEP 6 >> Begin charting your recertification plan We have provided you with a Recertification Planning Tool. Use this worksheet to assist with planning the activities you would like to engage in to achieve your 60 credit hours. STEP 9 >> Create a paper filing system You also need to save all documentation of the recertification activities you participate in. This information will be vital in case you are selected for a recertification audit. STEP 12 >> Submit your 60 credit hours and application payment before your recertification end date Be sure to have your 60 required recertification credit hours submitted by your recertification end date. If you are unable to do so, familiarize yourself with the recertification policies and procedures for late submission and expiration of your credential. STEP 13 >> Wait to be notified about your recertification status We will send you an providing you with an approval of your recertification application or requesting more information before an approval can be issued. This will be sent to you 4-6 weeks after your recertification application submission. Read this carefully and follow all instructions.
