1 Spring 2012 ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER HR DEVELOPMENT FOR THE NORTHWEST NORTHWEST HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION IN THIS ISSUE: SHAPE Achievements NHRMA Conference and Tradeshow News from College Relations Council News The HR Foundations Conference News from our Foundation Director A F F I L I A T E O F TM SOCIETY FOR HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT From the President Like many of you, it is time for me to recertify my HRCI credentials. I ve been talking to fellow HR professionals, many of whom are scrambling last minute to get their needed credits, and while there are always faster ways to get credits for a higher price, I like to look for the most efficient sources, the best information, and the most value for the money. NHRMA is the place to get great, relevant continuing education and earn preapproved HRCI credits for recertification at great prices! This is one of the advantages of being a SHRM member served by NHRMA in AK, OR, or WA. Again this year as in previous years, I ended up having doubled the amount of credits needed. Since becoming certified, when it s time to enter my recertification credits, I never have had to worry about having enough credits and it is a very easy process. I was curious why there was such a difference between me and other HR professionals out there. The key is my involvement with NHRMA. Attending the NHRMA Annual Conference these past three years has given me enough credits for both my SPHR and GPHR. This was combined with my HR association membership credits (SHRM) of 9 and leadership credits of 10. Here is a list of the credits at the last three conferences. Ren ee Mangini, SPHR, GPHR HRCI Credits at NHRMA Annual Conference 2009 Portland Pre-conference: 3 general or strategic Conference: strategic 7, international 3, or 2 strategic and international or 10.5 general HRCI Credits at NHRMA Annual Conference 2010 Sun River Pre-conference: 6 general or 5 strategic and 1 strategic leadership session (free) Conference: 4.5 strategic or 7.5 general continued next page

2 2 From the President continued HRCI Credits at NHRMA Annual Conference 2011 Bellevue Pre-Conference: 3 general or strategic and 1 strategic leadership session (free) Conference: strategic offered/7.5 maximum earned 25 general offered/ 7.5 maximum earned 7.5 international offered / 7.5 maximum earned There are also other great educational opportunities for preapproved HRCI credits. The HR Foundations/HR Academy offers 19.5 general credits a year for a three-day session. These are offered in the spring in Oregon, in the fall in Washington, and bi-annually in Alaska. That is 58.5 in three years. In addition, if you attend one of these and you are not a SHRM member, NHRMA will purchase your SHRM membership for you and that will give you enough credits to get you to the 60 needed to recertify. What a deal! Also, remember that we are always looking for volunteers for NHRMA, and those volunteer roles qualify for HRCI Leadership (up to 10 credits in three years). Another way to make sure you stay on track is joining us for great professional development opportunities throughout the year. This year, the NHRMA Annual Conference is being held in Anchorage, AK and offers a fantastic array of educational sessions. In 2013, we will be in Tacoma. Another great tip is to put your recertification information in a special folder to make it easy to enter or better yet, enter things on-line as you do them and then keep a copy for a possible audit. I hope you find these suggestions helpful and find a stress free way to earn your needed recertification credits through your involvement with NHRMA. Also, take advantage of all the other great things NHRMA has to offer. This is just one of the wonderful things about being in our three states and part of NHRMA. We have the NHRMA Advantage! I look forward to seeing you at our next event. Yours in service, Ren ee A. Mangini, SPHR, GPHR President, NHRMA-SHRM affiliate (AK, OR, WA) HR Management & Organizational Development HR and Business Consultant HR Program Coordinator /SHRM Student Advisor & Lead Instructor, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWIT) SHAPE Achievements NHRMA Congratulates the Northwest 2011 SHRM SHAPE Chapter and State Council Achievements Introduced in 2010, the recognition component of the SHRM Affiliate Program for Excellence (SHAPE) is the Excel Awards. Sincerely, Your NHRMA 2012 Conference Committee News from College Relations The NHRMA Student Conference and Case Competition were held on Friday, April 20th and Saturday April 21st at Portland State University in beautiful downtown Portland. The weekend started out with the Case Competition, where we had six teams participating from Portland State University, Central Washington University, Western Washington University, University of Washington and Lake Washington Institute of Technology. Students were in teams of four and were given a case dealing with a real world HR problem to address. They had four hours to use whatever resources they brought to develop a 20 minute presentation and a 1,200-1,500 word paper on the case defining the minor and major problems, possible solutions, their chosen solution and justification for that choice. Students presented to a panel of three judges, and their papers were scored by three others. All judges were certified HR professionals. Winners would have their expenses paid to the national conference in Atlanta this year. With a total of 600 points possible, we had an exact tie for first place between Portland State University and University of Washington! Second place went to Central Washington University. Congratulations to all our teams who participated, they are all outstanding groups of students. On Saturday, an even larger group of students attended the conference. They heard from great speakers including Rick Howell from New Seasons Market and Daryl Dixon on Diversity. Student chapter leaders also participated in a leadership workshop. The conference concluded on Saturday with a banquet, where the winning teams from the Case Competition presented. All in all a great event, and we look forward to next year s conference, which will be held at the Lake Washington Institute of Technology in Kirkland, WA. Thanks to all of our NHRMA volunteers and we hope to have you back next year this event would not have been possible without you! Plan Now To Attend!

5 5 Council News Alaska SHRM State Council People often ask me what people do while it is winter in Alaska. My response is volunteer! Sure, that is my personal perspective since the people I surround myself with (other HR professionals) are also fully engaged and I don t know any better. It is truly rewarding to work with a great set of people like the ones we have representing our state as members of our Board of Directors this year. We have just received the Gold SHAPE Award for 2011, and are working hard this year to ensure we get the Platinum SHAPE award for the first time in the State Council history, for our 2012 activities. I am confident that we are going to get there. The board has been extremely involved to date on achieving their respective initiatives. Some of them have had to be adjusted and new ones have been developed. To date, we have been able to: Conduct a financial review which allowed us to formalize our processes, bring our accounting electronic, and ensure that all past and current financial reporting requirements have been met. The only outstanding part is filing for our 501(c)6 status, which we are already working on Grow our social media presence, showing a growth of a little bit over 100% in facebook since January 1, and using technology to schedule posts to ensure we are always being active on the accounts Launch the When Work Works initiative in March Meet SHRM Foundation contribution guidelines to ensure we get the State Council Champion designation Institute two new scholarship (Students and HRCI Certification) and develop the corresponding materials Maintain and revamp our website and our quarterly newsletters Complete our Winter webinar program with 3 programs presented this year, and 3 more to come this Fall Create our online based Board of Directors Resource Manual, and are now conducting our monthly meetings via webex Grow our only student chapter in Alaska by 314% in 2012 (no typo, 314%!) We continue to work on many other activities and explore other opportunities which we hope to be able to report on in an upcoming edition. We also cannot believe that the NHRMA Conference is just 4 months away! As reported earlier, all the keynotes and concurrent session speakers are confirmed, HRCI credits have been obtained, and we are looking forward to getting to host our colleagues from WA and OR in October. There are still advertising/exhibiting and sponsorship opportunities; please check out the conference website at for more information. Please refer to the NHRMA Update that will be provided in this edition for additional details on the conference. We would love to have you follow us on one of our social media accounts; we post relevant information and also announce complimentary webinar programs in addition to the ones we present as a council. We have enjoyed having some of our WA and OR colleagues join our webinars, and we hope you continue to do so. Facebook /AKStateCouncil Linkedin Have a wonderful summer and see you at the 2012 SHRM Annual Conference! Patty Hickok, SPHR, GPHR Director Washington State Council Washington is ready for summer! Over the past few months we have continued our Veteran s initiative, partnering with SHRM for special events and providing continued opportunities of learning throughout the state at Chapter events and trainings. In partnership with the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Conservation Corps/Vet Corps, WA State Chapters have partnered with their local Vet Corp Representatives to create workforce readiness resources and employment opportunities. Check out each of their websites for specific local events you can join, whether job fair, interviewing training sessions or visits with the local Vet Corp Rep. Washington State has also had special visits from SHRM Leaders including Tara Fournier, SHRM College Relationship Young Professional, who continued next page

6 6 Council News continued joined us for our first Young Professional & Emerging Leaders Happy Hour event. With over 40 in attendance we reached new and emerging Leaders entering the HR profession. Both SHRM members and non-members attended, with a combined goal of connecting with others. Most SHRM members were not affiliated with Chapters, so this was their first opportunity to hear more. A casual event not following the traditional Chapter meeting format allowed attendees to network and share their experiences. WA State Council plans to host a 2nd event later in the summer at a Mariners game. Also this quarter the WA State Council Executive Directors enjoyed a rare opportunity to meet with SHRM CEO Hank Jackson! Over a private dinner, we were able to hear first hand his vision of the future for HR professionals and SHRM s role in our success. His parting message, Be ready for change! We need to continue to develop and evolve our organization to ensure we are THE HR association professionals join. Competition exists and we have to be vigilant at all times, locally, nationally and globally. We continue the year with free monthly Global seminars for those seeking GPHR credits or an insight to global HR. All are welcome to participate! Future meetings include: June Building a Global HR Network, August no meeting, September Relocation Trends & Policies, October International Benefits and Multi-National Pooling. Contact Carol Olsby, SHRM WSC Global Director and don t miss her article in the June SHRM Magazine on Women in Business in China. Our next State Council meeting is June 1st hosted by the Apple Valley Chapter in Leavenworth, WA. With 17 Chapters throughout the State, there is one ready to help you continue your professional development and network! Each chapter holds regular meetings geared towards education and outreach! They provided highly informative and up to date material that helps keep HR professionals on top of their game. Attendees received 19.5 HRCI general re-certification credits. Up next in the fall is the same conference held in Seattle, Washington at the Southcenter Doubletree Suites Hotel from October 16-18, See the NHRMA website for registration info.
