1 SHIA Newsletter President s Message by Diane Brooks We are finally getting in the swing of things this year. We have all had some challenges but we are definitely heading in the right direction. Many of you count on SHIA s quarterly meetings to augment your CEs. Our Program Chair and the Board are working together to put programs on the calendar for the rest of the year. To bring you up to speed with what s happening with the Board. At the CLA level: We are brainstorming and planning to expand our Board and Volunteer positions so that SHIA can provide you with useful and timely information. Broadening the shoulders of the Board will take the burden off the few. We want to engage all the membership. This year with the help of CHIA, we are going to pilot on-line voting for the SHIA Officers. So, be looking for that to be coming your way in mid-january. We are partnering with Fresno City College students to assist with newsletter production as an option in their Directed Practice. At the State level you can check out: ICD-10 Grassroots Advocacy CHIA Student Scholarships CHIA Volunteer Opportunities CHIA Recognition Awards Contents President s Message...1 Board Members.. 1 Treasurer s Report...1 SHIA News.2 Upcoming Events..2 FCC Update 3 ICD10 Advocacy.3 CHIA News.4 Announcements.5 Your SHIA Board President (acting) Diane Brooks President-Elect Diane Brooks Proud Past President Vito Angiuli Secretary Lauren Powers Treasurer Debbie Murry Member at Large Sarah Edwards CHIA/SHIA Nominating Committee Tammie McNinch Program Committee LuAnn Perry CHIA Liaison Sharon Lewis Treasurer s Report As of 11/25/14 Assets SHIA Checking $12, Petty Cash $ Total $12, Liabilities $ 0.00 Overall Total $12,

And, everyone would like less work. Volunteering keeps our organization alive and well. Give the idea some consideration and if you have any questions, please don t hesitate to contact one of the Board members. We must have our slate of candidates to CHIA by January 10. Board of Officer Positions to fill this year: President-Elect Treasurer CHIA Delegate Alternate If you re not sure about being able to do the job You can count on support from past officers For advice and mentoring SHIA Volunteer Positions: Coding and Data Quality Coding Roundtable Program Co-Chair (at least 2+ members) Newsletter Coordinator Newsletter Design/Publishing CHIA/SHIA Nominating ICD-10 Advocacy For the volunteer positions, talk to your co-workers or you peers. Having a group committee takes the pressure off of 1 person to do everything. The association welcomes new ideas and tailor meetings and education for your needs. 3 Fresno City College Update Sarah Edwards, MA, RHIA It s hard to believe the fall 2014 semester is over! Here are a few highlights of what s been happening in the program. Thirty students in the HIT 1 Introduction to Health Information Management course indicated that they are starting the HIT Program. There are 10 other students in the course that indicate they are in other majors or are still searching for a new career, and hopefully they will decide HIT is for them. There are approximately 65 HIT majors taking classes on a full-time or part-time basis. Seven students are completing directed practice assignments in area facilities this semester. The directed practice class is such an important component to the students in their development as HIM professionals. Thank you to all the hospitals and staff for working with students on their directed practice assignments: Adventist Health, Children s Hospital, Fresno Community Medical Center, Fresno Heart and Surgical Hospital, Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Saint Agnes Medical Center, and Community Memorial Health System in Ventura. Instructors in the program are Janet Chisholm, Becky Clark, LuAnn Perry and Sarah Edwards. We have been using the AHIMA Virtual Lab applications in our courses. The Virtual Lab provides our students with a virtual environment in which to practice and complete assignments in actual HIM software applications. Applications include 3M and Nuance encoders, MPI, EDMS, and EHR. AHIMA updated the Virtual Lab to set up all applications and assignments in a portal for single sign-on, making it easier for students to access everything in one place. In addition to the HIT Program, which is an associate degree program, we offer the Medical Coding Certificate of Achievement for students who want to focus on coding curriculum only. The certificate requires successful completion of 32 units of the curriculum from the HIT Program, but does not require general education courses. All of the HIT courses are available online, although some general education courses are only offered on campus. We encourage students who do not live in the Fresno area to complete their general education courses at their local community college, or through online opportunities, and combine those credits with the requirements for the HIT Program to complete their Associate degree at FCC. Information about the HIT Program is available on the FCC Web site under the Courses& Programs tab Health Sciences Division. If you have any questions about the HIT Program, please contact me at or sarah.edwards@fresnocitycollege.edu. ICD-10-CM/PCS Grassroots Advocacy Take Action Now, Let Your Voice Be Heard!
