1 Minnesota Chamber of Commerce SOCIAL MEDIA & CONTENT INTERN Daily Duties and Projects Summer 2012 Daily Duties SOCIAL MEDIA Schedule and send out messaging through social media channels. (Twitter, LinkedIn). o Announce & thank new members o Press releases o Updates on upcoming event details o Member recognition on top # lists from Business Journal or similar business publications o Member recognition from daily news clips (suggested by Jim) o Announcement of articles that may be of interest to the MN business community. Monitor social media communications: continuously monitor any mentions, re-tweets, comments and any other social media communications that occur and respond as needed. Work on building our Twitter followers and LinkedIn Connections: conduct a search for people who are relevant to the Minnesota Chamber s mission and those who are thought leaders in the industry and follow them or invite them to connect. Build a stats sheet for Twitter and LinkedIn metrics: These metrics would include: # of followers/connections made per week, retweets, mentions, Comments, discussions, click stats from Bit.ly links. Be on the Look-out for potential members: Review our list of twitter followers and LinkedIn connections for potential prospects to pass along to our membership team. Projects Research new social media outlet options for the Minnesota Chamber: create an outline on the social media platform of your choice that includes an overview, how it s used and how the social media platform that can reach the Minnesota Chamber s client base and that can help promote our programs/services. Deadline June 8 Competitive analysis: Monitor and generate a brief analysis of our competitors and what they are doing well on a social media. How do our efforts compare to theirs? Deadline June 15 Enhance and customize profiles and pages on new and existing social media platforms. Suggest Improvements for the Minnesota Chamber Company LinkedIn page by creating a mock-up for a programs/products tab. Mock-up deadline June 29 Blog monitoring: conduct some research and report back about the most important blogs in our niche. Suggest those we should follow. (Might open up some guest blogging opportunities). Deadline July 20 Video: Assist with building video content for marketing messages and the Minnesota Chamber YouTube account. Recording a couple of interviews with leadership staff, lobbying team, etc. Brainstorm ideas on how we can utilize video to spread our message out to the Business community in Minnesota. Deadline August 10

2 Compile/Collect online directory information from our members: Work with our membership team to connect with current members to help populate our interactive online directory, which will launch in the fall. 3 JOB DESCRIPTION Title: Job Purpose: Government Affairs Intern The Government Affairs Intern of the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce is responsible for assisting in researching, writing and development of the Chamber s legislative policies and agenda. Job Responsibilities: The Government Affairs Intern reports directly to the Director of Government Affairs of the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce. The position helps to coordinate the work and activities of the Government Affairs and Political Action Committees. Classification: This is a temporary, part time internship. Candidate must be able to work hours/week and have own transportation. Major Job Accountabilities: Attend all meetings of the Government Affairs and the Political Action Committees Conducts research as directed by the Chamber President and Director of Government Affairs Assists in the process of developing a legislative agenda including writing policy briefs, conducting research and developing political and policy strategies for the TwinWest constituency. Assists in the planning and execution of the TwinWest Monthly Legislative Breakfast Series, Business Day at the Capitol and other related events and activities. Assists in the development and maintenance of a grass roots network Assisting in the dissemination of information to members, media and on-line outlets Provides administrative support to Director of Government Affairs Other job-related duties as assigned by the President and/or Director of Government Affairs Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Proven research skills Effective writing and editing skills; strong written and verbal communication skills Knowledge of Chamber mission, vision and purpose. Ability to communicate in an effective, influential and concise manner Ability to work effectively with chamber staff and volunteer leadership. Must be efficient, well-organized, detail-oriented, able to work independently and sensitive to deadlines. Ability to represent the Chamber in a professional and enthusiastic manner, consistent with the Chamber s mission and vision. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The position requires a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Software

5 POSITION AVAILABLE: POSITION REPORTS TO: Economic Development/Public Policy Director (Intern) SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce Chamber President ORGANIZATION MISSION: The Southwest Metro Chamber of Commerce serves to strengthen our member businesses, and stimulate regional prosperity. SUMMARY OF POSITION: The South West Metro Chamber of Commerce is a Regional Chamber servicing the communities of Chaska, Chanhassen, Carver, Victoria and the surrounding area. This newly formed chamber is now one of the 10 largest chambers in the State of Minnesota. The chamber has approximately 500 members and is anticipated to see a dramatic growth in this membership over the next 2-5 years, related to new economic development and the opening of New Highway 212 to the area. The Chambers seeks an Economic Development/Public Policy Director (Intern) that can help coordinate the work of the chambers Economic Development and Public Policy Committees and their efforts. This position will work closely with the chamber; President, the chamber economic development and public policy committes and the Chamber Board in development and implementation of work plans for the year. This 12 month internship will provide the right candidate the opportunity to be a part of some of the major growth and development in the Southwest Metro Area in addition to the development of a sustaining public policy process and agenda for the Chamber. RESPONSIBILITIES: Attends all meetings of the Chambers Economic Development and Public Policy Committees, provides leadership for committee work, put together committee agendas, keeps the minutes of the committees, assists the Chair in the development of annual work plan and implementation of the plan. Assists in development and planning initiatives of the chamber and business community. Assists in Grant writing for specific projects that are identified as priorities for the chamber Actively represent the Chamber in civic and community affairs and local organizations as required Coordinates with respective area economic development officials to include: Carver County CDA, City of Chaska, City of Chanhassen, City of Carver, City of Victoria, Southwest Transit, Metro Council and others. Position will work from office space provided at the chambers office in Chaska MN. Intern will assist in the publishing of a coordinated regional economic development plan by the end of the program. Intern will assist in the development of a process resulting in an annual public policy agenda for the business community Complete other tasks as designated by the Chamber President QUALIFICATIONS: Undergraduate BA/BS degree. Enrolled in a graduate degree program in Public Policy or Equitant Level Program. Proven leadership and relationship management experiences/skills, Good communication skills, good written skills and attention to detail. Enthusiasm and desire to help reach the organization s goals Computer experience including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and a Membership Data Base System is desired Demonstrated ability to effectively work with volunteers, plan and conduct effective meetings. A strong understanding of what a Chamber of Commerce is and the role it plays in the community TIME COMMITMENT: Day time flexible hours (10-15 hours a week to 50 hours a month) some time spent at the chamber offices in Chaska, MN and some time allowed for out of office work. Time is spent supporting committee meetings are usually during the lunch time hours, some evening commitments to attend an occasional City/County/Council meeting as required. Most of the work will be during day time making calls, collecting data and meeting/networking with area business and civic leaders. COMPENSATION/BENEFITS: Position offers a $ a month stipend and expenses for this 50 hour a month commitment 12 month Internship (600 total hours). No benefits provided. 7 Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Internship Program The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce has openings for the public policy internship program. Interns are provided with hands-on experience in the area of public policy development and grassroots execution. Individuals selected will gain first-hand knowledge of the Minnesota state legislature and the Minnesota Chamber s public policy activities. The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce is the state s largest business lobbying organization representing 2,300 businesses across the state. Additional information is available at Internship Program Opportunities: September 2012 December 2012: We are seeking an individual with a strong desire to be a part of the research and development of public policy issues which supports the business community s priorities at the Minnesota legislature. Responsibilities include: extensive research and analytical thinking; assist in the development of public policy to support the findings; ability to present findings in a thought-out and articulate manner to staff and policy experts; and provide some administrative assistance. January 2013 June 2013: With the completion of the above task, the individual will be a part of the day to day activities at the state legislature and provide articulate response to Chamber staff. Responsibilities include: Monitoring and researching legislative activities; attending legislative hearings; conducting research regarding legislative issues; assist with the organization s grassroots activities; and provide some administrative assistance. This is a ten-month program with the expectation that the individual will learn about Minnesota Chamber of Commerce public policy priorities and be able to articulate its most pressing issues by the end of the internship. A stipend will be paid. If requested, education credits will be applied for at the requested institution. INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Qualifications: Intern should be pursuing a degree in political science, non-profit management, public policy, public administration or other related field. Experience in a legislative or non-profit office is helpful but not required. This internship will require hours per week. Hours will be set based on intern s schedule and the Minnesota Chamber s needs. This position requires a 10 month commitment. Job Responsibilities: The Public Relations Intern reports directly to the President of the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce. The position assists in the external communications of the Chamber and provides support for Chamber boards, committees and staff. Classification: This is a temporary, part time internship. Candidate must be able to work 24 hours/week. Major Job Accountabilities: The Public Relations Intern will assist in the creation, maintenance and distribution of the following Chamber Communications: o Monthly Member Newsletter o Weekly Chamber Member E-Publication (Snapshot) o News Releases o Website Development and Maintenance o Social Media Outlets Conducts research as directed by the President and Director of Government Affairs. Assists in the planning and execution of Chamber events and programs. Provides assistance in the development and dissemination of marketing and informational materials. Other job-related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Strong communications, marketing, social media and public relations skills Effective writing and editing skills; strong written and verbal communication skills Proven research skills. Knowledge of Chamber mission, vision and purpose. Ability to communicate in an effective, influential and concise manner Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with media partners Ability to work effectively with chamber staff and volunteer leadership. 10 Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Social Media & Content Intern The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce has an opening for its 2012 internship program. The social media & content intern at the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce will be instrumental in increasing our social media presence and increasing the visibility of our brand. The intern will also assist with various writing for print projects, publications, website and blogs. The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce is the state s largest business lobbying organization representing 2,400 businesses across the state. Additional information is available at Responsibilities include: Social Media Coordination Monitor and engage on various social media platforms by posting industry related content on a daily basis. Engage in online conversations on behalf of our event(s), including scheduling and regularly sending out messaging through social media channels. (Twitter, LinkedIn). Monitor online conversations, address user complaints or questions and direct them toward the appropriate person within the organization. Increase the number of followers we have on Twitter by following and engaging with both members and potential members under guidance from management Coordinating and Distributing Content Coordinate content ideas for the month ahead and follow the monthly social media, editorial, marketing and blogging calendars developed from management. Collect and/or create article content for web/publications. Update website, as needed and directed. Understanding and Monitoring Social Media Analytics Collect detailed statistics about our social media accounts and analyze them on a regular basis to establish trends and audience engagement. Track key social media analytics on a monthly basis, including Google Analytics, Bitly statistics, LinkedIn company stats, etc. Qualifications: Seeking a bachelor s or associates degree in business, advertising, marketing, communications, English or related field. Specialty in key social media tools (blogging, social networking, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc). General knowledge of public affairs and government relations preferred, but not required. Passionate about Social Media and how it increases awareness and event participation. Must be a detail-oriented, team player and technologically savvy. Proven written and verbal communications skills. Knowledge of HTML or web design is preferred. This internship will require hours per week. Hours will be set based on intern s schedule and the Minnesota Chamber s needs. This position requires a 3 month commitment with mid/late-may start date.
