4 Chapter 1 Safety DO NOT USE THIS MACHINE UNLESS YOU HAVE READ THE OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS! Safety glasses must be wrn at all times in wrk areas. Use a full face mask whenever pssible. DO nly use this machine n a prperly grunded circuit in accrdance with all lcal and natinal standards. DO NOT remve the grunding plug. If in dubt that this machine is prperly grunded, cnsult an electrician. DO always use relevant safety measures when wrking electrical machinery. Be aware that wrking in pipe drains can cause water puddles, s make sure t use GFCI s when necessary and persnal prtectin devices like insulated glves, shes and insulated standing pads. DO remve adjusting keys r wrenches prir t turning machine n. DO guard against electric shck by preventing bdy cntact with grunded surfaces such as pipes, radiatrs, ranges, refrigeratrs, etc. DO keep the wrking area clean and brightly illuminated fr ptimum peratinal safety. DO keep the machine balanced and stable at all times. DO be mindful that pwer tls can expse an peratr t vibratins transmitted trugh cntact with the machine. Prlnged expsure can lead t medical issues, which shuld be discussed with a medical prfessinal. DO NOT make adjustments t machine while the machine is running. DO NOT use cable exceeding 165 (50M) frm the machine. This culd damage the machine. DO NOT leave the machine running when nt in use. DO NOT hld drainpipe by hand r using the bdy. 7 Chapter 3 Operatins Nte THOROUGHLY READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE MANUAL BEFORE OPERATING THIS MACHINE! PURPOSE The purpse f the SDS200 is fr cleaning the insides f drainpipes frm 2 t 8 in diameter. This is a heavy-duty prfessinal use machine allwing a single user t easily clean pipes. This type f sectinal drain cleaner uses individually lengths (sectins) f cleaning cable. This machine uses 16 sectins, which can be added r subtracted during cleaning peratins. Maximum length f any particular run shuld be 165 (50M). MACHINE SET-UP The machine is designed pre-assembled. The user must nly take the item ut f the shipping crate. CAUTION: This machine is heavy lifting shuld be avided whenever pssible. DO NOT allw the crd r plug t drag alng the flr when wheeling between lcatins. Make certain the wrk area is dry. DO NOT place the machine in water. Use barriers t keep nn-essential persnal away frm rtating drain cable r ther mving parts. Place machine away frm passageways and make certain the peratr is able t see all parts f the wrkpiece. DO NOT set-up r mdify the machine in a manner that is nt intended. DO use a user prvided functining GFCI circuit when using this machine. MACHINE COMPONENTS The main cmpnents f the SDS200 are mtr husing, rtating clutch channel and main machine frame assembly (see figure belw). The mtr drives the clutch rtatinally and acts as the main drive cmpnent f the machine. These cmpnents must be nt be remved except by a qualified technician. Pwer must be discnnected prir t any service. 4

8 The machine has a main n/ff switch with a frward and reverse psitin. These switches perate the turning mechanism, which turn the machine clutch. When the mtr switch is turned n, the user is able t pull clutch handle, which starts the clutch rtatin. When the handle is released the rtatin immediately stps. PREPERATION FOR USING MACHINE CAUTION: Befre making any adjustments, ensure the main machine switch is in the O ff psitin. CAUTION: Befre starting yur jb, it is vital t be aware f the distance frm the sewer inlet pipe t the main sewer pipe r septic tank. Overrunning the cable int large spaces can cause cable t frm knts and prevent the cable frm being returned thrugh the smaller pipe line. Avid ging int main sewer lines farther than 10. Avid ging int sewer tanks mre than 3. Clutch peratins T rtatinally engage the clutch, pull the clutch handle dwn (twards the grund). The user must hld the handle in the dwn psitin t keep the clutch rtating. T disengage the clutch, allw the clutch handle t mve t the up psitin (twards the ceiling). NOTE: Sectinal drain cleaners d nt spin the drain cleaner cable in/ut (twards/away) frm the drain clg. Sectins f the cable must be individually cnnected and manually fed t the pint f the clg. When the drain cleaner end reaches the pint f the clg, the user engages the clutch t spin the cutter in a frward f reverse rtatin. CAUTION: Keep hands and fingers away frm the clutch jaws and cutting pieces when the machine is plugged int a pwer surce. Clsing clutch jaws can cause serius damage t bdily parts. Main On/Off Switch Operatins O indicates ff psitin. L indicates cunter-clckwise rtatin. R indicates clckwise rtatin. 5

9 Rubber Safety Hse Operatins The rubber safety hse is attached t the back f the clutch channel. See figure belw. CAUTION: The rubber safety hse must be installed. It prtects the user frm ptential whipping actin f the end f the sectinal cable. Withut it installed, damage t persns r prperty are pssible. Drain cutter peratins The drain cutters attach t the end f the drain cleaner cable. These are nly attached n the frnt side f the machine cable. Attach the drain cleaner cutter nce the end f the cable has been inserted int the frnt f the machine clutch channel. Insert cutter and head facing T grve. The cutter will nly install in ne directin. Push in the cutter until the pin lcks the cupling. T remve the cutter, use the key (straight metal pin with sharp flat side). Put the key in the hle n the cutter until the pin depresses. When it is depressed, the cutter shuld slide ut f the T grve. There are a variety f drain cutters available fr these units (see cutter/accessry table belw). 6

10 Cutter/Accessry Table When deciding which cutter t use, the user shuld chse a cutter size that is at least 1 smaller than the drainpipe t be cleaned. The style f the tl is determined by the peratinal needs f the jb. This chice is generally left up t the experience f the user. Funnel Shaped Helical Cutter Cllectin Helical Cutter 4 Edge Saw Cutter Used in the secnd step f cutting t effectively remve the blckage residue left n the pipe wall by straight helical cutting. Fr cllecting the brken cable r drill in the pipe. Used t remve hard materials like chemical depsits. Spade Shaped Cutter Helical Cutter Saw C-Shaped Cutter Used t remve the grease and gunk frm the pipe wall r used in the secnd step t remve residues n the pipe wall. Fr remving blckages like rts, branches, debris r grease frm pipes Fr remving materials like cream, sap etc. that adhere t the pipe wall. 7

11 RUNNING THE MACHINE D all pre-peratinal and peratinal safety checks frm Chapter 1. Cnsider yur security and stability as well as the rientatin f the machine in the wrk area. Cnsider the wrk surface material, cnditin, strength, density and rigidity. These factrs directly affect the tls peratin and user safety. Ensure the machine handle is free f grease r il. Inspect the cable and cuplings fr damage r wear. Cable shuld be replaced when they are severely crrded. Wrn cable can be identified when the utside f the cil becmes flat. CAUTION: Wrn r damaged cables can be extremely dangerus. If they break they can cause serius injury. Inspect the cutter edges fr sharpness r damage. Dull r damaged cutters can lead t binding and cable breakage. If n a wall lcatin (clean ut), psitin the machine s that the frnt f the machine is as level t the sewer inlet as pssible. If n a grund lcatin (flr clean ut), psitin the machine with the utput apprximately 2 feet frm the sewer inlet. CAUTION: T much rm in between sewer inlet and frnt f machine can result in the cable kinking and/r twisting, which can lead t cable breakage. Feed a sectin f cable int the frnt f the machine (see figure belw). Make sure the cable ges int the clutch carriage frm the frnt f the machine. Fully feed the sectin all the way thrugh leaving apprximately 1 ft remaining at the frnt. CAUTION: DO NOT cuple mre than ne cable sectin at a time. Multiple sectins shuld nt be allwed t cme ut the back f the machine (n the rubber safety hse side). Select apprpriate cutter fr the specific clg and pipe being cleaned. Install the cutter (see abve sectin fr specifics n installing the cutter). User shuld be psitined in a way t safely keep cntrl f the cable. They shuld be able t easily release clutch handle and n/ff switch. The user shuld als be in a psitin where they have a hand n the cable between the frnt f machine and pipe inlet t cntrl the cable twisting actin when an bstructin is reached. Place cable int the pipe being cleaned and push cable in until it reaches a pint where it stps. Plug the machine int pwer surce. Make sure t put n safety equipment. Pull enugh extra cable thrugh the machine until it frms a half circle between the frnt f machine and the sewer inlet line. Hld the cable lsely in the glved hand. 8

12 Turn the main machine switch t the n psitin ( R fr general cutting frward clckwise). NOTE: The machine will turn n, but the cable will nt spin yet (until the clutch handle is depressed. With glved hand n the cable, pull dwn the clutch handle with the ppsite hand. Push dwn n the half circle f the cable until the cable advances dwnwards. NOTE: A quick actin up r dwn n the clutch handle is preferred s as t keep the three-jaw set in the clutch frm wearing ut t quickly. As sn as the cable half circle has advanced frward and there is n lnger slack in the circle, release the handle clutch s it stps spinning the cable. Pull 8-10 f cable ut with the glved hand t frm anther half circle. Repeat the feeding prcess until resistance r bstructin is encuntered. This will be the blckage. The can identify the blckage by difficulty feeding cable and a cable twisting mtin in the peratrs hands. If mre cable is required t reach an bstructin, the fllwing prcedure shuld be fllwed. Turn machine ff. Lp the end f the cable that is currently in the line back in the line t secure it frm mving. Insert anther sectin f line thrugh the frnt f the machine (female end first). Keep 1 f the line ut. Attach the cable in the line t the cable in the machine. Prceed with feeding cable peratins. If the cable becmes verladed in the clg, relieve the lad tensin by pulling back n the cable with shrt jerking mtin t free the cutter. Slwly advance the cutter frward int the clg. Repeat the prcess until the clg is free. NOTE: Make sure cutters are always spinning when prgressing int an bstructin and d nt frce the cable. Prgress and time taken in a clg depends n the nature f the bstructin and cutters being used. CAUTION: DO NOT allw tensin t build up in the drain cleaning cable. This can happen if the cutter has stpped rtating due t a blckage, but the mtr clutch and cable cntinue t spin. This can cause a lt f trque n the cable causing it t suddenly twist ptentially wrapping arund an arm r hand. Be extremely aware when cutting thrugh a blckage. Cut slwly and carefully when feeding the cable. NOTE: If the tl gets stuck in an bstructin and the manual disldging prcedure will nt wrk, there is a special prcedure that can be tried using the reverse L cunter-clckwise switch n the n/ff switch. The L reverse prcedure shuld nly be used t free an bstructin. Running the machine in reverse can cause damage t the drain cleaning cable. Only switch t L after mtr has cme t a cmplete stp. Switch t L engage clutch handle nly until cable is free. Release as sn as tl is free f bstructin. Turn unit ff and turn t R and cmmence nrmal cutting peratin. WARNING: Never perate the machine in L reverse psitin fr any ther purpses. Operating in reverse can cause damage t the cable and peratr. Once bstructin is clear, turn the machine t ff psitin. T retrieve the cable frm the sewer line, the fllwing prcess shuld be fllwed. Leave the machine in the R frward cutting psitin. Engage the clutch. 9

13 With glved hand, pull the cable ut r hld cable against the edge f the sewer inlet pipe until a half circle is frmed in the cable. This essentially threads the cable ut f the pipe. Release clutch. Push excess cable back thrugh the machine frm frnt t back. Remember t turn ff machine and discnnect sectins as they cme ut. When a sectin f cable is remved, insert the cable back int the cable carrier. Make sure t recnnect the sectins f cable t the last sectin f cable in the carrier. Repeat this peratin until cable is fully ut. Turn ff machine. Discnnect Pwer. Remve safety hse. After using this machine, clean and flush cables, cuplings and cutters with water. 10

15 Chapter 5 General Maintenance Nte SERVICING SHOULD ONLY BE DONE BY A QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN. DON T FORGET TO UNPLUG POWER TO UNIT PRIOR TO SERVICE! Inspect electrical crds and electrical cnnectins. Keep machine clean and free f debris. Flush cables with water after each use. Occasinally lubricate cables and cuplings. Check fr misalignment, binding and breakage f all mving parts. If damaged, repair tl befre use. Check the cutters fr sharpness r damage. Clean clutch teeth with wire brush. Check the attritin n the 3-jaw clutch. If the pints are wrn, replace with identical piece. After each use cat all mving parts (including clutch driver) with crrsin resistant il. Occasinal Maintenance Check brushes fr wear and replace if wrn. Grease rcker arms and main bearings every 3-6 mnths. Grease main bearings thru grease fitting inside clutch handle slt. After a lt f use, clutch jaws may need t be replaced. Remve the screws that hld the frnt guard t the husing. Remve screws that hld the nsepiece n. Slide ut clutch driver and replace jaws. Put nsepiece assembly and guards back n. WARNING: DO NOT perate machine with guards remved. After a lt f use, the V-Belt may need t be tightened. Remve V-Belt Guard Lsen lcknut, turn blt until V-Belt tightens. Tighten lck nut back up. Replace guard. 12
