Arcade Legends Service Prcedures Arcade legends machines as well as the riginal Ultimate Arcade machines are all based n ff the shelf Pentium 3 cmputer cmpnents. With this in mind mst prblems with these machines can be fixed by trubleshting the machine as if it was a hme cmputer. These prcedures d NOT apply t the Ultimate arcade 2 r Arcade Legends 2 series machines. Tls needed: 1 #2 Phillips screwdriver 1 VGA mnitr (A standard cmputer mnitr) 1 ps/2 style keybard (a cmputer keybard with the small rund cnnectr that plugs int the cmputer) PROBLEM #1 The machine starts up and nly white dts are displayed n the screen The lights n the machine turn n but nthing is displayed n the screen- Please pen the cin dr and lk fr a lit pwer indicatr n the frnt f the cmputer. If n light press the large tp buttn n the frnt f the cmputer (Cmputer -1/ white twer style case), a silver bar with 4 raised bumps near the frnt right crner f the cmputer (beige cmputer-2 desktp style case, and black cmputer -3 desktp style case), r the red buttn n the unfinished metal desktp style case. Once the cmputer pwers up yu see dts scrlling diagnally acrss the screen r a blank screen This is nrmally caused by BIOS settings that are incrrect fr varius reasns. What yu re actually seeing are errr messages that are intended t be displayed n a VGA cmputer mnitr, but as this cabinet has an CGA mnitr the errr messages cannt be displayed crrectly. These settings cntrl hw the cmputer is cnfigured when it is turned n. The settings can be crrupted by a dead battery n the mtherbard, static electricity discharged t the cmputer by a defeated grund cnnectin t the utlet, r pwer surges ging int the machine frm the wall utlet. It is strngly suggested that yu plug this machine int an adequate surge suppressr, nt just a pwer strip. If yur machine is 2 years ld r lder, g buy a CR-2032 battery and replace the battery inside the cmputer. (instructins t fllw shrtly)

SERVICE Prcedure: 1. Unplug the machine frm the wall utlet. 2. Remve the access panel frm the rear f the cabinet. 3. Unplug the keybard cable that s currently plugged int the cmputer, and plug yur keybard in there. D NOT use the muse prt as it has n functin. The keybard prt is the lwer prt n the desktp style cases, and the leftmst prt n the upright style cases. Later prductin machines d nt use any keybard cable at all t cmmunicate t the interface bard, all the cmmunicatin between the cmputer and interface is dne thrugh the USB cable. 4. Unplug the mnitr cable that s currently plugged int the cmputer, and plug yur VGA mnitr in there. Nte: There s a very gd diagram f the cable cnnectin n the inside back cver f the instructin manual. If yur is missing yu can dwnlad it frm ur website in the manuals sectin. 5. Turn n yur VGA mnitr. 6. Turn n the cabinet pwer switch (n the tp f the Arcade Machine) 7. Press the pwer buttn n the frnt f the cmputer. Nte: The pwer buttn is the large tp buttn n the frnt f the cmputer (Cmputer -1/ white twer style case), a silver bar with 4 raised bumps near the frnt right crner f the cmputer (beige cmputer-2 desktp style case, and black cmputer -3 desktp style case), r the red buttn n the unfinished metal desktp style case. 8. Once the cmputer pwers up, tap the apprpriate key n the keybard until the BIOS setup utility menu appears. Nte: The BIOS setup sheets are lcated in the service bulletins sectin and detail what keybard key yu need t press t get int the BIOS setup utility. 9. Fllw the apprpriate BIOS setup sheet fr yur cmputer nly changing thse items n yur cmputer that dn t match the settings listed n the dcument. 10. Save the settings and exit the setup utility. Nte: When the cmputer pwers up the next time yu will see (n yur cmputer mnitr) a small blue message saying Jshua kernel lading, then yur mnitr will display smething like ut f range r it will g t sleep - this is NORMAL.

11. Again turn ff yur machine and unplug the cabinet pwer crd, discnnect yur keybard and mnitr, then recnnect the game cntrller cable and game vide cable. 12. Plug in the machine, turn it n, and verify that everything wrks like it shuld. 13. Re-install the rear access panel. That s all there is t it! This shuld be dne every 4 years r s depending n the quality f the replacement battery. PROBLEM #2 Buttns and jysticks are nt functinal, ONLY the trackball wrks The jysticks and buttns are slw t respnd, and eventually the game freezes The machine takes an unusually lng time t start up The machine cnstantly displays a black screen This prblem can ccur immediately after delivery f a new machine, r after a machine has been mved frm it s previus lcatin. There is a small external bard inside yur machine that interprets the jystick psitin, buttn presses, and trackball mvements and translates thse signals int signals that the cmputer can understand then feeds thse signals int the cmputer thrugh the keybard and USB prts f the cmputer. All cntrl signals except the trackball signal use the keybard prt and the trackball uses the USB prt. What usually happens in this scenari is the keybard cable ging int the cmputer has partially pulled ut f the keybard prt f the cmputer r there was a stuck buttn when the cmputer was turned n. When the cmputer inside the machine turns n it des a series f self tests and wuld nrmally display an errr message if an errr is fund, but we disable the errr reprting system in BIOS (because yu can t read them anyway with the game mnitr). S if a

keybard errr is present the cmputer disables the keybard prt s nthing but the trackball wrks. If by chance the cmputer passes the pwer n self test but lses cmmunicatin t the interface bard thrugh the keybard cable after the game sftware is laded yu may have a machine the freezes at ne f the screens, the mnitr ges cmpletely black, r the cntrls becme sluggish just befre the machine des either f the previus nasties. SERVICE Prcedure: 1. Unplug the machine frm the wall utlet. 2. Remve the access panel frm the rear f the cabinet. 3. Remve the Phillips screw than hlds the plastic anchr wrapped arund the end f the keybard cable that s plugged int the back f the cmputer. Nte: Refer t the inside back cver f the instructin manual fr a gd diagram f the cable cnnectins. 4. GENTLY unplug the keybard cable then plug it back in. 5. Plug in the machine and turn it n, then wait fr the game selectin menu t appear then try yur cntrls. 6. If all is gd, reinstall the back panel nt the cabinet and start playing, If nt g t the next step. 7. Turn ff the machine and check yur buttns: a. Gently depress each buttn and listen fr it t click. b. Gently release each buttn and listen fr it t click. NOTE: If yu didn t hear a click bth ways yu may have a defective switch which will require remval f the cntrls panel. Remve the Phillips screw (4) frm each crner f the panel (where the trackball and jysticks are munted). Firmly grasp bth jysticks and pull upwards- the panel shuld cme ut f the cabinet. Turn the panel up-side dwn and bserve the peratin f the switch n the rear f the ffending buttn. Make sure there are n wires between the white switch and the clred buttn assembly.

Make sure there are nly 2 wires cnnected t the switch (the third terminal is unused). Make sure the switch is prperly seated in the buttn assembly (it shuld nt mve arund). Make sure t check the service buttn behind the cin dr. Ensure that a red buttn is sticking ut f the tp f the switch (the small white bx n the back f the buttn). 12. Check yur jysticks: If any f the abve are nt as bserved n yur machine, please crrect and retest. a. Mve ne f the jysticks up and listen fr a click. b. Release the jystick and listen fr a click c. Repeat abve fr each f the 4 directins n BOTH jysticks. If any f the abve are nt as bserved n yur machine, please crrect and retest. 13. With the back panel remved frm the cabinet turn ON the machine and lk fr 2 BRIGHT lights n the interface bard. 14. If all the abve are OK, turn ff the pwer and discnnect the keybard cable plugged int the cmputer and plug a knwn gd keybard int it and turn n the pwer again. If the machine appears t wrk again, press the up and dwn arrws n the keybard t see if the game selectin menu mves. If it nw mves yu may have a defective keybard cable between the cmputer and interface bard, a defective interface, a defective buttn r jystick switch. If the menu des NOT mve check the BIOS settings frm the abve prcedure then test again. If ALL else fails t reslve the prblem try relading the CD that came with the machine. If after all this the machine still desn t start wrking prperly cntact Chicag Gaming Cmpany Tech supprt department fr further instructins. PROBLEM #3 The machine starts nrmally then shws a screen asking fr an 'unlck cde'.

This ccurs when the machine is started up with the recvery CD installed in the CD drive. These machines have the perating sftware installed at the factry s installatin f the game CD is nt necessary, it's prvided in case the cmputer requires service and the game sftware needs t be reinstalled t the hard drive. SERVICE Prcedure: Simply remve the CD frm the CD drive and restart the machine. PROBLEM #4 The machine starts nrmally then ccasinally crashes t a black r grey screen when a buttn is pressed (mstly the exit game buttn). This culd happen because f crrupt sftware n the hard drive due t a failing hard drive, a recently installed game pack that has a crrupt image, r data n the hard drive that has changed because f pwer spikes including remving the pwer crd while the machine is perating r quickly cycling the pwer switch n and ff r imprper grunding f the machine. SERVICE Prcedure: Start by lcating yur recvery CD and nte the serial number n the CD case. Als start the machine and g t the service menu and nte the MCID number lcated n the lwer left f the main service menu screen. If yur machine will nt perate lng enugh t get t the service menu yu can insert the recvery CD int the CD drive and restart the machine, select 'install' frm the menu and nte the MCID number frm the install cde screen. If the cmputer wn't bt frm the CD check yur BIOS settings as shwn in prblem #1- specifically the bt sequence. We have nticed during repair f these machines that reinstalling the sftware frm the recvery CD desn't always crrect the integrity f the hard drive s we HIGHLY recmmend btaining a cpy f the drive manufacturers diagnstic tls. All newer machines (serial number abve aprx use Western Digital hard drives, and their diagnstic tls disk image can be fund here: Dwnlad the ISO file using the save ptin and when finished burn it t a CD. Please fllw the directins n dwnlad page fr directins abut hw t d this. We then cnnect a keybard and VGA mnitr t the game cmputer and start the cmputer with this newly created CD in the drive. We nrmally run the drive diagnstic first t ensure the drive actually wrks crrectly using the extensive test. Once the drive passes the diagnstic test we then 'write zers' t the hard drive using the full ptin. Once this is dne yu need t exit the diagnstic tls, remve the CD and replace it with the game restre CD then turn ff the pwer.

With the pwer ff unplug yur keybard and mnitr and replug the game mnitr and game cntrller cables and restart the machine. The game shuld take yu t the install menu and yu shuld then select 'install' and call GlbalVR at (408) fr an install cde. They WILL ask yu fr the CD serial number as well as the MCID cde s they have t be EXACT r the install cde will be wrng.
