3 Management Summary High vlume applicatins are an exercise in redundancy. In particular, hw can the systems be put tgether t minimize an utage f the critical applicatin. When there are 4 millin transactins flwing per day, even a tw minute utage (r 10,000 transactins) can be painful. This prject was such an exercise. It nt nly required a high degree f redundancy but als a high degree f autmated health checks that wuld recnfigure data paths n the fly depending n the results f the health check. Backstry The transactin prcessing landscape had changed significantly ver the last ten years: Transactin vlume grew t ver 4 millin transactin per day. and mainframes technlgy changed significantly. The challenge was t advance the cre applicatins while at the same time advancing the netwrk and hardware infrastructures withut disrupting the transactin prcessing envirnment: Back-end mainframes were replaced. Frnt-end terminal server technlgy was replaced. Old enterprise bus technlgy was replaced. Applicatins residing n the abve technlgies just kept grwing bth in terms f vlume and cmplexity. The philsphy was t make small but cntinued upgrades t all aspects f the cmputing envirnment with the central theme f nt disrupting the transactin prcessing. Each physical server cntains tw instances f the. A lad balancer is used t distribute the message traffic between all instances f the. Fr redundancy there are tw queue managers that handle the message t the IBM system. A health check facility has been added wherein the tests the critical data paths t ensure functinality in tw respects: 1) validate that the data path is clear all the way t the IBM applicatin and 2) validate that the respnse time perfrmance f the data is within acceptable metrics. If either test fails, the health check mechanism signals the Lad Balancer that the cmprmised data path is ut f cmmissin. Versin 1 3 Cpyright

6 Cnfiguratin Due t the high vlume f terminal traffic emanating frm the servers, there are redundant message servers (TIBMCnverter) as illustrated belw. Each message server is paired with a HealthCheck that cntinually tests the data path f that message server. There are als separate inquiry and update transactins message servers (UnixTIBMCnverter). 7 Functins TIBM HealthCheck UnixTIBM WMBTIBM Functin Receives a cnnect request, establishes a sessin, extracts the message frm the sessin, cnverts the character set, creates an message cntaining the message and inserts the message int the apprpriate queue. Once the message is stred in the queue, the TIBM waits n a message insert with the crrect ID, picks up that respnse message, and sends the message back t the server. The sessin is then clsed. There is ne HealthCheck server fr each UnixTIBM. Every 20 secnds, the Lad Balancer send a HealthCheck request t the HealthCheck. The HealthCheck analyzes the perfrmance metrics f the assciated TIBM and respnds back t the Lad Balancer with either an OK r a Nt OK, r des nt respnd. If the Lad Balancer des nt receive an OK respnse, the data path t the assciated TIBM is disabled. The HealthCheck is als used by a separate autmated mnitring facility which will alert an Operatins Center any time the HealthCheck des nt return OK r fails t respnd. Remves a message frm the input queue, cnverts the message int the IBM frmat retaining the message riginatin infrmatin, inserts the message int the IBM queue, and waits n the IBM queue fr a message with that crrelatin ID. Once that message is received, the UnixTIBM cnverts the message int Unix frmat, creates an message cntaining the utput message, and inserts the message int the apprpriate applicatin queue.
