2 Page 2 Spudder Spirit The buzz is electric at RHS. The excitement started with a new addition to our campus; the SPIRIT ROCK. The Rock was donated by American Stone, thanks to Rob Amburgy, general manager. The Spirit Rock has already been owned by the class of 2017, 2019, 2018, the ASB, the football team, and most recently the band. It has proven to be a fun and yet spirit building part of RHS. September 18 th rolled in and out with a bang, we had our first pep assembly of the year, celebrating our fall sports athletes, and our cheer team as well as a fun skit. The fog machine was a big hit. The night began at the stadium with our annual Tail Gate; thanks to Family Man Barbeque, and Jason Mittman for providing the great brats. We fed over 300 people! We won the football game and moved the party or Rage in the Cage to the tennis court for a dance where over 200 students came out and had a great time.
3 Page 3 October 2015 Homecoming 2015 Our next big event will be Homecoming Week from October 19 to 23. The week is filled with Spirit Days; Monday is the ever famous PJ Day, Tuesday is Jersey Day, Wednesday will be Western Day, Thursday is Disney Day and Friday the traditional Color Wars with Freshmen in White, Sophomores in Orange, Juniors in Blue and Seniors is Togas. There will be lunch time activities including a 3 vs. 3 Basketball tournament, Pixar Short Films and Stud ball competition. Wednesday night from 7 to 9 will be a Hoedown in the Barn with a Bonfire and smores. Finally, Friday evening will be our Homecoming coronation where we will crown our King and Queen. The Dance will be on October 24 th from 8 to 11 in the RHS Commons and the theme this year is New York, New York, Broadway Style.
4 Page 4 Spirit and pride are high with the Spudder football off to 4-0 start with wins vs Castle Rock, Kalama, Washougal and Woodland. The offensive and defensive lines set the tone each game as the Spuds dominate up front. Jalen Williams scored 5 touchdowns in the win vs Woodland. The Spudder volleyball team is 5-1 overall, 4-0 in league. Non-league matches with Kelso and Battle Ground have the team prepared as the defending 2A GSHL league champions to make a run at the District Championship. The team will play in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Chandler Arizona on Oct 2-3. The Lady Spuds soccer team tuned up for league with contests against Camas, Skyview and Mt. View. With an overall, record (4-0 in league) the team is poised to make a run at winning another district and another State appearance. Cross Country- has the highest turnout in program history with 51 HS and 26 MS runners. The RHS varsity boys placed 3 rd in the 3 Course Challenge in Seaside and won boys division 3 (out of 23) at the Nike- Portland Challenge. The JV boys took 3 rd in the novice race. The varsity girls took 5 th at the Nike-Portland Challenge and the JV runners were 5 th in the novice race. Both teams defeated Mark Morris in the GSHL meet on Sept 16 th. To celebrate their great performance at the Nike-Portland Challenge the team had a team dinner at the Ridgefield Obstacle Course. Boys Golf is scoring well each match, currently sitting in 3 rd place in the GSHL. League play finishes October 13th, and then preparation begins for the district tournament on Oct 19 th and 20 th at Tumwater Valley. The 2015 Fall Sports Guide will be here soon. 5 Page 5 October 2015 Senior Portrait Deadline Plan your senior portraits now. The deadline will be here before you know it. Portraits need to be received by Nov. 19th! No Exceptions. The images need to be a 2.5 by 3.5 by a resolution of 300 JPG. The head size covering at least two thirds of the frame. I also need a vertical composition. Please label the image last name dot first name. Send it as an attached e mail at mark.cook@ridge.k12.wa.us Please call or e mail Mark Cook for further questions. FFA It s that time of the year again! FFA just had their first sign-up meeting. If students are still interested in the group and missed the meeting, don t worry. Just talk to Mr. Johnson or Jordyn Wishard and they will be happy to help. FFA is so much more than just showing animals. They do a lot with our school and community too. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about and participate in community service, gain leadership skills, learn new things, and of course make new friends. We can t wait to start the new year with new members and all the fun exciting activities we do.
6 Page 6 Senior Highlight Logan Black Class of 2016 Logan Black is our inaugural senior highlight for the Class of Just a few weeks into his senior year, Logan has many accomplishments to check off of his list the biggest being his application and acceptance into Montana State University! Logan plans on studying architecture. Using his background with the RHS Pre-Engineering STEM class, he stepped into the world of engineering and design. That educational experience coupled with family discussions and work around the house helped Logan understand more about the field of architecture. Having a major in mind, Logan used that to drive to research his post-secondary options. He and his dad set out on a road trip across the west coast to visit schools with good architecture programs: University of California, UCLA, University of Idaho, and Montana State University. An unfortunate event turned into a golden opportunity; Logan was running late to the scheduled tour and was able to visit one on one with a counselor. During that time, Logan got an understanding of the culture at MSU, the activities available, as well as the academic opportunities. It underscores the importance of a student visit to a prospective campus. Logan felt like he belonged and could see himself feeling at home there, potentially in a brand new housing complex! While at MSU, Logan was able to meet with the Dean of the Architecture department. The Pre-Engineering class will give him a leg up over other applicants. Logan is continuing to use his senior year AP classes and Leadership involvement to prepare him for success at the collegiate level. Logan is a student who values doing the hard work. He has made a lasting impression on his peers and teachers at Ridgefield High School. We are so excited and proud that Montana State feels the same way about Logan.
