1 New Miami High School Senior Newsletter March 2015 Dear Parents and Seniors, Even though we are approaching spring break and the school year is almost over there is still a lot to do to complete your last year of high school. Hopefully, you have submitted the FAFSA. If you haven t already done so call the financial aid office of the schools you are applying to and find out their FAFSA priority deadline date. Even if you have missed it--send the application in anyway! Be sure to submit it electronically in order to speed up the processing time. If you have been accepted to more than one college, but have not yet decided which one you will attend, it is important that you "get on the road" during spring break and visit those campuses. A campus visit is the best way to learn about the unique qualities of the school. Colleges should be informed of your decision to attend or not attend their institution as soon as possible. If you are still thinking about what to do after you graduate from high school now is the type to explore your options. There are many options available to graduates including 4 year institutions, 2 year institutions, career-technical schools, apprenticeship opportunities, and entering the workforce. Research suggests that the more schooling you complete after high school the more money you will earn in a lifetime. In the next few months pay close attention to scholarship and college application deadlines. Graduation will be held on May 21 st, 2015 in the High School Gymnasium. Sincerely, Mara Elam New Miami School Counselor Follow me on Visit my guidance webpage at : Like our Facebook page: New Miami Middle and High School

Review each question carefully. Keep in mind that it is the student's responsibility to obtain an application. BE SURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT ADDRESSES FOR COUNSELORS AND RECOMMENDERS! What counts with admission officers? 1) Rigorous program of studies grades ) College entrance tests (ACT or SAT scores) 3) School extracurricular and community activities 4) Essays and letters of recommendation What is the best way to obtain a good letters of recommendation? 1) Give plenty of time for person to complete the letter 2) Ask a teacher from one of the four core subject areas you have in high school and your counselor to write a recommendation 3) Put your request in writing, stating the date the letter needs to be mailed 4) Include a transcript and copy of your resume for the person writing your recommendation 5) Send a thank you note to the individual(s) who wrote you letters What should I remember when completing an application? Colleges expect one thing-- that applicants read all instructions carefully and follow deadlines. Here are some helpful hints! 1) Create a file folder for each college you intend to apply to and keep copies of any correspondence you send or receive 2) Read the ENTIRE application before completing any part of the form 3) If you make an error do not cross it out 4) Pay attention to details 5) Read the questions and answer them completely 6) Always give correct information 7) Be neat and legible if the application is a written one 8) Preferably type the application; if not use black ink (never use different colors of ink) and print, (Common App. submitted on line.) 9) Make a copy of the entire application and essay

6 10) Observe all deadlines-- don't cut your time line too close 11) Your application represents YOU-- present your best self 12) REMEMBER: WHEN INVITING A RECOMMENDER ON THE COMMON APP. YOU MUST INVITE, THEN ASSIGN THEM TO EACH COLLEGE YOU WANT THE RECOMMENDATION TO BE SENT 13) Once you have submitted your Common App. it cannot be changed What do I do with the counselor pages on a college application? Counselors will complete the counselor pages on college applications and return them to the student or submit them on line through the Common App. or another online provider. If counselor forms are given to the student it is their responsibility to mail them in a timely manner to the correct college. Once again be mindful of DEADLINES! IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS Graduate Services will be coming to New Miami and Butler Tech to take care of all your senior ordering needs! Don t forget to order your cap and gown as soon as possible.
