1 This Week in Guidance Week of September 9, 2013 Issue #2 Welcome to This Week in Guidance This Week in Guidance is a weekly newsletter provided by the guidance department at the MRH High School. It will include the latest news about colleges, scholarships, ACT, job opportunities, upcoming events and much more. We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter and always appreciate your feedback. Upcoming College Visits Mr. Harcharic has already been busy setting up College Visits. Colleges and universities will be invited to visit our school every Thursday during the first semester of the school year. Exceptions will be made for schools that are coming from out of town. Students will be required to RSVP if interested in meeting with a rep. Sign up sheets will be available in the guidance office. September 18 Barbizon School of Modeling Lunch room visit September 19 Stephens College 1:00PM Midwest Institute September 23 Davidson College 11:00AM September 26 University of Alabama-Huntsville 10:00AM Testing Coming Up PLAN Test September 10, 2013 All 10 th grade students PSAT October 16, 2013 Open to all 9 th, 10 th, and 11 th grade students (the cost is $8.00) You will need to sign up in the guidance office. Juniors, even if you took the test last year, Mr. Harcharic encourages you to retake it this year to improve your score and increase your chance at potential scholarship opportunities. 2 Opportunities for Students Dual Enrollment College or dual enrollment courses offered and passed from a two- or four-year accredited institution as enrichment classes will be accepted and recorded on the official transcript. You may enroll at several local colleges for courses in lieu of high school courses while attending MRH. In most cases, the student must pay the costs or college credit. It is an excellent way to take upper level courses and receive college credit. It is an alternative to AP courses. In addition, 4 of our AP courses offer college credit through the University of Missouri St. Louis and our Spanish II and III courses are eligible for college credit through Saint Louis University. See the counselor for more information. Generally, to be qualified to have a student participate in Dual Enrollment courses they need to be a 11th or 12th Grade Student, have permission from their home high in writing, complete the enrollment process at the institution of their choice in the area, provide proof of enrollment in college class to home high school, and return Official Transcript from college to MRH High School at conclusion of the semester. For every single class a student takes at a college during a given semester, he/she is able to modify their school day at MRH High School. St. Louis Community College requires you to have a GPA of 2.0 or higher to enroll, and local four-year universities require a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Junior Achievement would like to extend an invitation to high school students to participate in a very unique and rewarding opportunity. Through this in-depth, leadership and entrepreneurship program, students gain real-world business experience by working in teams of students to conceptualize, capitalize and manage their own small business. Hosted and advised by top companies across the Metro St. Louis area, students gain insight around larger concepts such as market research, business leadership, financial management and valuable communication skills. If you are interested in developing the skills and knowledge that will set you apart when competing for scholarships, college acceptance and eventually a spot in the global marketplace, the JA COMPANY PROGRAM IS FOR YOU. For more information or to sign up, please visit Tulsa University Are you interested in attending The University of Tulsa?
