1 Dear Families, Academy Endeavour Elementary School 3475 Hampton Park Drive, Colorado Springs Office: Fax: Attendance Line: or at under Report an Absence Core principle: Responsibility April 2013 Welcome to April! I want to take time to thank each of our third, fourth, and fifth grade students for working so hard on their TCAP tests. The staff is so proud of each of our students; please join us in congratulating your child for a job well done. We would like to welcome Mrs. Wendy Wise as a new member of our office staff. Wendy will be our Principal s Secretary. Her four children attended AEES and she is very excited to join our staff. Please welcome Wendy, we are so glad to have her working with our school community. Come introduce yourself when you have time so she matches a face to a name! As the year comes to a close, we will continue to work on our Site Plan objectives and tactics, monitor achievement, and celebrate our successes. It is increasingly evident by the ninth year in a row of large choice numbers that people are noticing great things at Academy Endeavour. We are thrilled to have you as our partners in our endeavour to launch each student on a journey of limitless possibilities. Warmly, Bobbi Harper Field Days!! 3 rd -5 th on May 16 th K-2 nd on May 17 th No rain make up days More information coming soon! April 1: April Fool s Day! 2 Caitlyn, a 5 th grader at AEES, was volunteering to serve food and provide hygiene items to the homeless during a Girl Scouts activity when she connected with a staff member from Community Partnership for Child Development/Head Start. She learned that CPCD serves low-income, high risk preschool children in our community and some of them do not have books to read. This really bothered Caitlyn so she crafted a plan to help! Cait thought since AEES was a "Success for All" reading school, and children cannot learn to read without books, maybe she could help partner the two. She approached her AEES Green Team sponsor, Mr. Vehlewald, and asked if Green Team would sponsor a Book Drive. With his approval, she developed a plan and met with Mrs. Harper to request permission to have an AEES Book Drive of new and gently-used books to support the children of the CPCD/Head Start Programs. Caitlyn then contacted CPCD to share her plan and cement their need for books. Over the course of a few weeks, the students of AEES donated over 770 books!!! Caitlyn will be delivering the books to CPCD soon. CPCD also featured Caitlyn and the AEES Book Drive on their Facebook page. Thank you to all AEES families who helped make this so successful! Domyniko Jordan in Mr. Valente s 4 th grade class went to the Colorado State Swimming Championship on March 8th, 9 th and 10th and was very successful in all of his events - 3 rd place 200 Medley Relay 4 th place 50 Breaststroke 4 th place 100 Breaststroke 7 th place 200 Freestyle Relay 11 th place 50 Freestyle 14 th place 50 Backstroke 19 th place 100 IM 34 th place 100 Freestyle and 35 th place 50 Butterfly These places were great accomplishments considering there are around 50 swimmers competing per event and he had to swim all these events in 3 days! Sir Israel Pulido, a 7-year-old in Mrs. Hageman s 2 nd grade class, is a wrestler here in Colorado Springs, and attends Academy Endeavour Elementary School. He has been wrestling for two years with the Pine Creek Eagles and works very hard six months out of the year to be a great youth wrestler. On March 2, 2013, Sir Israel went to the Colorado state tournament in Castle Rock and wrestled in a 15 man bracket at 46 lbs. He wrestled very hard! He took 1 st place which makes him a Colorado State Champion! He is a talented little guy on and off the mat, and knows that hard work pays off and if you set your mind to it, you can achieve any goal you set out to achieve!! His family, coaches, and friends are very proud of him, and continue to support and watch him grow into a smart, talented, athletic young man!!! Way to go, Sir Israel!!!! Page 2 Parents and students have known her as Ms. Vandervort for the last 11 years at AEES but when she returns from spring break, she will be Mrs. Volz! Mr. and Mrs. Volz were joined by their six children in Capistrano, CA, over spring break for this wonderful event!

3 Noticias de las clases de español! April is here and our classes are in the middle of our study of the South American country of Perú. We saw a short movie about a girl who lives in Lima, Perú and talked about how Perú is different from the United States and how many things are similar between the two countries as well. After our study of Perú, we will have a Game Day where students choose a Spanish game to play, write and perform a puppet show in Spanish, practice their recent learning by playing calendar kid, build Spanish sentences with our magnetic word cards, or complete a jigsaw puzzle of a Spanish-speaking region of the world. Game Day is always a student favorite they really get a chance to show me what they have learned and have fun with friends at the same time! Lauren Brewer Spanish Teacher lauren.brewer@asd20.org Landsharks Running Club is about to begin! Come join the coaches for an informational meeting on Monday, April 1 st at 3:30 pm in Room 9!
