October 2015 opper ing October kicks off with Parent Teacher conferences. These one-on-one meetings are priceless opportunities for families and teachers to get a better understanding of our children. By preparing well for your meetings with teachers and following up with your child and their teacher afterward, you can strengthen your child s school success. Consider the following tips as you prepare for your child s conference. Bring notes and papers. Write down questions you want to address with the teacher. Make a list of things your child says are going well or is having trouble with either with schoolwork or classmatesmake a note of it. When it s time for the conference, you ll have a ready-made list of things to discuss. Be on time. Conferences are tightly scheduled, so please show up a few minutes early. Take notes. In addition to presenting the questions and concerns you brought to the meeting, make sure to take notes about what the teacher is telling you. Talk to your child. After the conference, sit down and share with your child what you and the teacher discussed. Emphasize the positive things the teacher said. It is important for your child to feel positive about learning, the teacher, and the school. Follow up. Once you know what you can do at home to help your child succeed in school, make sure to do it. If you feel like you have a serious issue, that wasn t adequately addressed, set up a time to talk to the school counselor or myself. ~ Report to Parents, NAESP Copper King Teachers will be conferencing with parents during the week of October 5 th -9 th.. Monday, October 5 th and Tuesday, October 6 th are full school days. We will be following an Early Release Schedule on the 7 th, 8 th and 9 th and dismissing at 12:40 pm. We hope to see ALL parents and their children here to discuss their progress in school and next steps. Mark your calendars for the following events that build the Home School Connection: October 5 th -9 th : Parent / Teacher Conferences October 5 th -8 th : Book Fair October 22 nd : Parent Luncheon at 11:am with Dr. De Blieux, Pendergast District Superintendent October 30th: Copper King Fall Festival Thank you for your support and partnership! Janine Ambrose Principal

The Importance of Parent Involvement Parents, Your participation at school events and support here at Copper King are vital to your child's education. Not only can your involvement benefit your child, but it can benefit everyone here at Copper King. Listed below are some of the benefits and how you can be involved. Benefits of Parent Involvement: Children generally achieve better grades, test scores, and attendance. Children consistently complete homework Children generally display a positive attitude towards school. Parents have a better understanding of the teacher's job and the curriculum. Parents are more aware about their child's progress and events at the school. Teachers and principals can learn more about the culture and community they serve. How to Get Involved: Speak to your child about their school day, ask to see their binder or backpack, and support them with their homework. Communicate with your child's teacher about how you can help in the classroom. Set up a volunteer schedule with your child's teacher (you can volunteer at school or provide support from home). the assistant principal, Mr. Clark, if you are interested in being involved with larger events (Fall Festival, Kids at Hope Week, the school musical, etc.). Mr. Clark if you have any interest in being apart of the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Mr. Clark's is mclark@pesd92.org Thanks and have a great day!

Counselor Corner At the end of this month (October 26-30), we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week. It is a week dedicated to the awareness and celebration of our decision to say no to bullying, drugs, alcohol and tobacco. We will have many fun activities at school to promote the decision of making healthy choices. I also want to thank you in advance for your support of these school activities. In years past, Copper King s families have been fantastic at encouraging their children in their knowledge of the serious consequences of drugs, alcohol and tobacco by promoting participation in our school s spirit days and classroom/schoolwide activities. Our families have also been very supportive of our messages regarding the seriousness of bullying, how to stand up against it and the importance of reporting it. Your support and encouragement are a critical part of reinforcing these important messages to our children. As we delve into this topic, Copper King s goals are to focus on the positive side of making healthy choices. Some of the important choices our children are learning to make for themselves are: Eating healthy Getting plenty of sleep Being involved in physical activities that strengthen the body Coming to school each day ready to learn Participating in various extracurricular activities Following-through on commitments made Volunteering time and talents to help others in need By looking at the list above, maybe your family can set some goals in any of the above areas. For example, did you know??? Most U.S. youth do not meet the recommendations for eating 2½ - 6½ cups of fruits and vegetables each day? Or Empty calories from added sugars and solid fats contribute to 40% of daily calories for children/adolescents aged 2 18 years, affecting the overall quality of their diets? Approximately half of these empty calories come from six sources: soda, fruit drinks, dairy desserts, grain desserts, pizza, and whole milk. If children know their family supports making healthy choices, they themselves will be more likely to make these decisions, too! Happy parenting! Ms Christiansen

Kindergarten Through 3rd grade This letter is a reminder to parents of all students in Kindergarten through third grade of the Arizona Move on When Reading law. The Arizona Revised Statue (A.R.S ) states that a pupil will not be promoted from third grade if the pupil obtains a score on the reading portion of the AZMerit test that Falls Far Below the third grade level. In 2012, the state added a requirement that schools submit a comprehensive plan for reading instruction and intervention across grades Kindergarten through third grade that supports the goal of having all third grade students reading proficiently. Starting in 2014, students who are not proficient in reading and writing will be retained in third grade to receive the supports necessary to attain proficiency and progress. We share your interest in ensuring that all K-3 students have access to effective, strategic and purposeful reading and writing instruction using strategies that have proven to be successful with research and evidence. Our teachers have been well prepared and trained to deliver instruction that will help your child meet the standards for reading and writing. Parents of third grade students who may be struggling to reach proficiency will receive notice of their child s abilities during parent-teacher conferences in the coming weeks. Teachers will provide an indication of the student s reading levels and plans to support the child s reading and writing skills. Some strategies to support reading at home: Read daily, nightly, and always with your child. A suggested 20 minutes a day is great! Set reasonable goals to increase reading stamina. Start reading for shorter periods of time then gradually increase to meet the goal. Have your child read books, magazines, newspapers, and signs while driving to allow them to always be using their skills. Let your child listen to reading on CDs. Ipads, or any other computer based programs. Celebrate progress! Track the number of minutes or books read and have a small celebration when goals are met. For more strategies or resources a great website is The more reading your child can do the better! Research has shown that reading to your child in their home language is just as beneficial as the second language they are trying to learn!

Our Book Fair is Coming! All Copper King students and staff are excited about our upcoming Book Fair. An amazing selection of books is headed our way! At the Book Fair you will find the latest and finest titles for kids, as well as books of interest to parents. The Book Fair is a great way to get everyone excited about reading. Here s a brief video that highlights the big dreams that can be realized through family reading: Where and When: Copper King Library Our Book Fair Goal 800 Books!
